Last night me and 3 mates listened to this on a small speaker on Constantine Bay in Cornwall while the sun set behind the waves. We all sat in silence in a moment of mutual serenity. I will cherish that memory forever. What a shame we all have to go to work for a living 😢

this is beyond what a human can comprehend. The utter emotion that spills from him makes me feel as though all is good, and will get better. This song is not just a piece of art but a journey. I believe what the song "Promise" is really trying to tell the story of a visit to a lost loved ones grave. Meet me there, with bundles of flowers We’ll wait through the hours of cold Winter she’ll howl at the walls Tearing down doors of time Shelter as we go He is talking about meeting her at her grave with flowers, like people typically do to people they love who have died. Here they can be together and share how difficult it is waiting to see the other once again, “wading through the hours of cold.” It is difficult, but he views it as a way to break through the life/death/time boundary, and it is a thought that protects him from the cold he faces in life. And promise me this: You’ll wait for me only Scared of the lonely arms That surface, far below these burn And maybe, just maybe, I’ll come home Obviously asking her to wait for him on the other side, whether it be because he is scared of death or he may think he is going to Hell which is “that surface far below these burn.” But just maybe, he will join her in heaven. Who am I, darling to you? Who am I to tell you stories of mine? Who am I? I think here he starts to break down, wondering if possibly she isn’t there on the other side, if she even wants to listen to him when he speaks about his daily life and stories he has, or if he was as important to her as she was to him. Who am I, darling for you? Who am I to be your burden in time, lonely Who am I, to you? If she is there, who is he to force her to wait at death’s gate for him? Why should he leave her with the burden of waiting there for him while he gets to live his life down on earth? Does he even mean that much to her? Who am I darling for you? Who am I to be your burden? Who am I darling to you? Who am I? Reiterating the same thoughts, but likely either in a way that is telling her to go, realising that she has made the choice to go herself, or that she was never there in the first place. I come alone here I come alone here He is sitting there alone, she isn’t there on the other side anymore listening to him, if she ever was. He seems to want to still come here in the future though, even alone.

I just want to say thank you for sharing this, even though this comment didnt get the likes it deserved. Just on its own the song moved me, but now that i see what the lyrics are about i'm even more touched. Brought a tear to my eye just reading this and listening to this piece of art. Havent felt these kind of emotions listening to a song in my life ever before.

He denies he ever lost someone close but I simply find it hard to believe. This and follaton wood are some seriously potent songs, so much so that I find hard to believe they could be derived through sheer brilliance alone, although he is obviously brilliant.

In 2013 I got to see Ben Howard live for the first time in New York. I went from MIA to NYC on my 19th birthday to see him. I was waiting for this song and then Ben came back on stage.I remember being right up front, and this older gentleman was standing next to me in tears. I was young and this song left a big print on my life, but for that gentleman it probably meant something completely different and yet at that moment we were just so connected.

I guess we will never know, but this is what i do know. the life that we live is such a precious gift and one day we all have to give that up, we should be happy as long as we live and strive for the things that we love. And promise me this: You’ll wait for me only, Scared of the lonely arms. Surface, far below these words And maybe, just maybe I’ll come home Who am I, darling to you? Who am I? Gonna tell you stories of mine Who am I? Who am I, darling for you? Who am I? Gonna be a burden in time, lonely Who am I, to you? Who am I, darling for you? Who am I? I come here almost every day for months now. I honestly would't know what i'd do without this song, it literally gives me emotions which i never experienced before. Like opening wounds just to heal them, i can't thank Ben and the person uploading this video enough. No words can describe how i feel about this piece of art. Once again, thank you both so much, you saved me

Sliding through, awake, tears for having come back, old memories gone, tabula rasa, a fresh beginning, same old souls, different faces, laughter, sadness, discovery, hatred... A new challenge, keeping your head up, love, obsession, maturity and happiness. The joys of youth and whistling through the nights, friends. Nightmares, reality is bittersweet... Broken heart, once, twice, countless times. A pause, an epiphany, death? Too much to do, still... Found myself adrift, caught. Why dreaming when life is sweeter? Listen and float!

This beautiful song fits the movie so perfectly and is the best song on a soundtrack of beautiful songs. It introduced me to Ben who I’ve come to admire well beyond just this song. But this will always have that original connection for me. See the movie if you haven’t already. I think you’ll thank me if you do.
