Insane to win a State championship at 160 as a Freshman much less in Iowa. I honestly don't remember seeing a single Freshman qualifier my Junior or Senior year at 160 and 171 (NC) and if there were any above 145 it was rare and they weren't stand out. Great content btw.

@ws8061
@ws8061 Жыл бұрын
@@Ronald-qs1pn yeah I think winning States as a Freshman from 145-171 is probably more impressive than in any other weight classes. It's just that sweet spot where Guy's are big and strong but still really technical too and 99.99% of underclassmen that size just don't have a chance. So impressive.
@samclements3594
@samclements3594 Жыл бұрын
complete novice here, why is it more impressive at a certain weight more than the others?
@shar9883
@shar9883 Жыл бұрын
@@samclements3594 At low weights the field is generally younger so if you win as a freshman you are often winning against other underclassmen. To win at a higher weight class as a freshman he has to beat out other bigger guys that are typically older. So when he won state as a freshman he was probably wrestling against juniors and seniors

I don't think I've ever seen a guy committed to a big D1 for wrestling and football like he is. It will be interesting to see how it plays out for him but he's got the size, frame, and athleticism for football and there's no better work ethic in sports than a wrestler so I don't see why it wouldn't work if he can stay injury free on the ball field.

I really don't want to be the guy to use him as my claim to fame, but I know this guy. We played in the same high school baseball system at City High (who's head coach is Dan Gable's son inlaw lol) I never played on the same team as him but last year, I was on his brother's team. He could do pretty much everything except for pitch because of his tremendous athleticism. And despite that, he was always good natured and cheerful. Nobody deserves what he's earned more than he does. With that being said... I did strike him out in a scrimmage once...

I'm seeing a lot of show boating winners, and temper tantrum loses from many Wrestlers out there. In the 1980s we still shook hands were polite about our excitement or humility. Ben shows this on the mat. I can see the disappointment in his eyes when he wins and his opponent slaps his hand and walks away. Someone, a very good person, taught this young man some morals. We could use a million more like him in this country.

You forgot a handful of 4 timers in the 80's after Jeff Kerber. Scott Morningstar, NCAA champ Joe Gibbons, Greg Randall who were all standouts. He has 4-5 years in college to prove he is up there with the greats. There were 3 timers and others who were 3 time NCAA champs like Jim Zalesky and Barry Davis from CR Prairie and the Brands brothers with Olympic medals. Don't put him on a list with the all time greats until he reaches those heights.

Think about the context of his run. He won his first title, at class 3A, as a freshman, at 160 pounds. That, in and of itself, is nuts. Then you consider the way he utterly dominated the field in his 4th year, at 220… Dude is a man wrestling kids. He’s regularly tilting dudes for full counts at 220… Unreal. I’m a die hard Hawks wrestling fan. After Spencer Lee’s loss in the semis of his finals NCAA tournament, I hardly could think straight. But Keuter immediately gives me something to look forward to. Unrelated story, I actually went to Roosevelt with John Meeks and had a single class with him my sophomore year (he was a senior at the time). I remember talking to him and asking about wrestling and he told me a story of when where he was at a mental low point in his career. He had a close wrestling friend from SouthEast Polk High School (can't remember his name for the life of me) who went undefeated his freshman - junior year. During his friend's senior year, John told me that there was a controversial call made by the ref who was judging his friend's match. It ended up as a loss and was the only match his friend didn't win during his high school career. John told me that his friend not being there with him in their 4 time state champ/undefeated journey really messed with him mentally. But, John ended up going undefeated and became a legendary 4 time champion, so he was obviously able to power through it. Great video. I recognized SO much. Being an Iowan native myself. Especially Jordan Creek Mall. I'd recognize that place ANY day of the week. Lol

Agreed, I’m lucky enough to live next door to PA and we bring our kids down there as much as possible for the sheer fact it’s a state full of hammers and if you wanna be the best you have to wrestle the best.

@@Fatty_Margo their beast. Not sure if Cael Sanderson sprinkled championship dust when he crossed the line or what.

Iowa simply doesn't have the population to support the best. When you have Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Erie, and the Altoona area, the other states don't match up.

I wonder if Dan Gable will be giving Ben good advice for his freshman year wrestling for Iowa this year.

Iowa wrestling is crazy but my brother wrestled for Camden Catholic Based out of cherry hill nj and it was full of Athletes but the one I remember and nobody talks about him is Anthony Ashnault of South Plainsfield. That mf is insane

From louisiana watching this and seeing a great wrestler, eating horrible jambalaya 😂. All jokes aside this is awesome!

Good video but you need to mix the audio better. Music makes it hard to understand what you're saying for large parts

Ben has a great genetic advantage over most kids. Had he not taken up athletics, which is hard to imagine, the coaches would have nagged him throughout his high-school years. How many minutes did he spend on the mat during the tournament this year? This video suggests it wasn't many. I miss the wrestling in Iowa, but also the great supermarkets like HyVee.

Congratulations kid you just reached immortality in wrestling.. every four-time state champion... Has one at least one national champion Nick suriano is the last undefeated high School wrestler to win multiple national championships he won two and was a runner-up.. so three-time finalist two-time national champion 4 x All-American that kids still don't get the respect he deserves

I was so glad when he won, (I knew he would). The kid he beat in the finals deserves what he got. He goes to school about 10 miles to the east as ours we always have really big tensions and that kid and one other always do stupid stuff after they win. He also flipped off our crowd after his third match. This last bit I am about to stay will be hard to believe but he has a daughter at age 18.
