Yep, Lochaber mountain rescue do a great job! I saw this documentary when It was first broadcast back in the day and took on board fully its advice! 👍😎

I was in the Ben Nevis hill race in September 95 - terrible conditions, low cloud, sleeting on the top, I'm pretty sure the organisers announced a 'leg covering' rule when we were gathering on the sports field. I wore Helly long johns under my shorts & had shells in my bumbag. Summit rocks were glassy and Red Burn descent was so slippery. Great to see this footage - thanks for uploading.

Dr Sedgwick was a brilliant surgeon. I worked in a small hospital on the Isle of Skye and he’d come up to do surgery. When I was a student nurse he would let me hover about next to him and let me see what he was doing and he’d explain it all. He was very kind to the patients too and he always had a smile on his face. I was 18 in 1996 and it’s great seeing Fort William back then.

great archive..4 of us climbed tower ridge in 1991 where a party was benighted below us.. 1 year later 3 of us were benighted on Observatory ridge for 5 hours (didn't need and didn't want rescue just ran out of light.) thanks for posting !!

It is always good to know such people will come to help those in the wild. Quite comforting. I am certainly glad of our volunteers in our local Search and Rescue. Even with skill and experience one can have unforeseen or overwhelming circumstances.

What a captivating documentary Snowy. I think that's one of the best mountain rescue stories I've encountered. Yes, the Scottish Mountains are awe inspiring but not to be taken lightly. Thanks for sharing. All the best. Mark

I'm glad you liked this old documentary. These guys, although they never knew it, were my teachers on mountain safety! It was thanks to them that I set off into the British mountains on the correct footing back in the day!👍😎

I was a Coastguard Auxiliary, age 18 when this was filmed. We didn’t get paid for our time - rescue callouts or training. The guy at 44.17 said we did. Maybe the retained fire brigade guys did, but we didn’t. We did it for the same reasons anyone joins a voluntary rescue service, to help people. We trained with mountain rescue, the navy and the RAF. It was where I learned cliff rescue as well as putting my years of orienteering competitions into use.

It always annoys me when volunteers pronounce they do it for nothing, they don't. They do it because they love it, it makes them feel good helping people, its the perfect hobby for them. I bet many of them would pay to be part of a rescue team.

As an American paramedic and search and rescue operator, I must say these guys are poor. They should work on their standard ops and update their equipment to the 21st century.

Diandra thanks Dee, I thought I'd go for the biggest one on the island first thinking it would be downhill with the others after that! I was wrong, it took 3 attempts to climb The Ben's neighbour Aonach Beag. The way to its north east ridge is long, remote and mostly pathless and the mist never seemed to leave this hill. The weather and climbing up into the misty unknown spooked me out (it's said to be haunted!) twice before I made it to the top on a clear sunny day on my third attempt! It's still my favourite mountain because it beat me twice!😂

There was talk about charging for rescue over here in NZ. It would have created problems if it had gone ahead, If people knew that they would be charged for rescue, then they would not report it and try to search for their people themselves, of course this could and would create more problems. some people who are rescued do contribute something towards it or make a donation. Some rescue can cost upwards of $50,000. Enjoyed the video ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

Haha the government charging people for rescue whilst they waste billions left and right on wars, aid, failed programmes etc. I mean don't we already pay taxes to fund the emergency services? We should be encouraging people to go walking and climbing in the wild, the exercise would reduce the obesity problem that is currently costing health services way, way more than rescues ever will. 😂
