This song is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I have had the joy of hearing. I listened to it for years before reading Blood Meridian and then it got so much better. ❤️

Who is this song about? Is it based on someone in history?

Great Question! This song is about a fictional character (Grannyrat Chambers) in Cormac McCarthy's epic Blood Meridian. In D-phi's full length video of this performance (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqDJnaJtaK2ModE), Ben Nichols and a history professor discuss how many characters in the novel are in fact based off of real historical figures (though I can't say for sure about Chambers)!

He's not based on a real person, but his story is beyond tragic. Chambers was an American who fought in the Mexican American war and fell in love with a Mexican woman. He went back to Mexico to find her and was captured and imprisoned by the Mexican military. Toadvine, who is a wheeler and dealer, gets Glanton, the scalp hunter, to hire him, Chambers, and the kid out of the Mexican jail. A few days later, Chambers tries to steal his horse and gun from the Glanton gang to go back to Mexico to find the woman he loved. Glanton's Delaware scouts go out after him and come back with his horse and gun. The group moves on.
