We all know capitalists do not see people as human - merely as cogs in the capitalist machine. If your life’s purpose isn’t to generate profit for the one percent then what exactly are you good for?
Ben Shapiro has recently said what they have all been thinking for decades, you are not entitled to retirement, in fact we should cut state pensions and you must actually work until you literally drop.

Ben shapiro is somewhat right there. Having purpose and healthy, active mental and physical health for many comes from their job. Many who retire don't keep themselves as engaged in activities as they did when they were working. I hate to agree with Shapiro on this but he's right but for the wrong optics. Although you can replace backbreaking dependent jobs with community jobs that they can do at their own pace, with their own hours that they might be passionate about. Shapiro sees this from a pro corporate position, I see this from a pro people position. For proof, doctors will often prescribe those who are retired and at risk of rapid onset mental decline with doing puzzles or even playing videogames and accompanying that with light exercise but not everyone is into that.

@@mallardofmodernia8092 except we're all overworked and underpaid nearly every industry is extremely exploitative and stressful that not even the healthiest of 20yrs olds can keep up with without doing permanent damage to their bodies. Theres a reason the only people who are demanded this aren't the ones in the actual workforce and i can only assume you come from rich parents or youre a child whos never worked. But if you ever work your delulus will quickly be sqaundered and your head will be yanked outta that sand you're keeping it in. @@Monkchelle_Kongbama but no one on the left is telling you to work til you die or that your only value as a human being is how long and how much you work. They are simply pointing out how out of touch with reality Ben is given his background. Also, Ben and others of his ilk are funded by billionaires to spew incoherent and conspiracy theories backed by no data or research and who have legions of employees to do all the actual creative work for them. Meanwhile, leftist creators come from (mostly) working class backgrounds and need to research, edit, write, and film their own content. A lot of them need to work a regular job on top of youtube especially if they aren't big. To compare the two as having it equally easy is naive and insane.

If either or both of them used to do jobs that are known for leading to a shorter lifespan, they should have been giving the opportunity and means to do so. Including financially, of course; either by the state or their employer. Roughly 20 years ago, there was kind of a debate going on in Switzerland about letting construction workers retire ten years or so earlier, since so many of them never see retirement age due to having worked in those physically taxing jobs. I would love or that to be the case everywhere. This would also help the image of such jobs (which isn't quite as low here as in other countries), meaning that those 55+ construction workers could be replaced with younger people eager to receive a good enough pension that allows them to retire at age 55. But a lot could be done for people to be able to retire earlier or to not have such physically and mentally taxing jobs. I constantly see people perform jobs that no society could ever need. Of what use to society as a whole are you if you advertise and sell and inform people about phone and internet plans? All you do is generate income to pay taxes. No-one needs that job to be done. The same goes for building and maintaining ticket machines for public transport or for checking people on the bus for "tickets and fees" (if the latter is still a thing in the UK) and sending them stern letters about finally paying their fine and then all the work that is required to finally lock up some of those people. It's administrative nonsense. Bureaucracy no-one needs. Just make using public transport free of charge.

I work for Social Security and we provide Retirement Benefits, Disability Benefits, Auxiliary Benefits, Survivor’s Benefits, and Disabled Adult Child Benefits. Also, your Retirement is between 62 to 67, depending on when you are born. Your benefits cap at 70 years old. You have to apply for Medicare at 65, unless you are working and receive healthcare through that work. Finally, calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme is dim witted. People who are so sick that they can’t work rely on Social Security for at least a safety net. Also, you have a choice on when you want to retire, you just need the info. My advice, go to your local Social Security and get the facts straight.

The idea of not wanting to stop working because you want to be useful isn’t just a capitalist idea (staying in the workforce can be as much about personally wanting to feel active and useful as it is about money), but I do think capitalism removes the choice of whether to continue working from a lot of retirement-age people. Plenty of older people would rather volunteer or look after their grandkids or pursue hobbies (all of which would keep them active but aren’t profitable) but have to stay in the workforce to cover the bare necessities.
@SuprousOxide
@SuprousOxide 3 ай бұрын
It's also assuming that your job is the ONLY thing you can do to make yourself feel active and useful. My grandparents lived for healthy and happy for decades after my grandfather retired (It was the loss of my grandmother that seemed to lead to my grandfather's mental decline and ultimate death). They had hobbies and projects around the house they enjoyed, they grew vegetables in the garden. They had grandchildren to watch and spoil. They helped out the community. I don't think slaving away at a full time job for those decades would have improved their standard of living.

I think it's often the opposite. Cause there's so many problems in the current state for workers. One, workers and people having to protest their bosses and businesses, and for government to protect them, is stress, not life extending. Also, workplace abuse and worrying about low wages and surviving. Ben forgot that many people are forced to jobs they dislike to survive. Doesn't Ben remember he failed his dream as a screenwriter?

In the 1930's An economist named John Keynes Predicted that by the end of the 1900's Americans would be working Fifteen hours a week Keynes was a capitalist Who predicted leaps in innovation That would lead to a world in which People didn't have to work To have what they needed to live Food, water, shelter and clothing For the most part, he was right By mid-century the Green Revolution was in effect And has spared one billion people of starvation The world isn't perfect But global issues of poverty and hunger Are in a far better place than they've ever been What he failed to predict Was the unrelenting side of capitalist innovation Consumerism hit the nation hard in the 1950's And ever since Income inequality has gotten far worse Despite having the essentials for people to live We are working more than we ever have To support this unnecessary overabundance of products Demanded by American consumerism And a false scarcity, created by One-sided distribution of resources We are so far removed from the actual idea Of "earning a living, " We use the term to explain Why 90% of us spend our lives making profits For the top 1% that own everything The only thing we're "earning" is more merchandise for A sick, spoiled culture And CEO's that can't profit enough from it We are not an artificial intelligence What part of getting a new phone every year is a fucking living What part of working for Wal-Mart is a fucking living What part of trying to look busy at a desk is a fucking living Who's living are we working to sustain How does it feel to be the latest innovation of a broken fucking system How productive is your self-destruction How free do you feel In a work-culture of burnout Heart disease Anxiety Poverty And depression Capitalism is finished Hypocrisy Scarcity If we're really being honest What'd we trade for fucking objects Me and my pals all got our degrees We're lucky to work Seventy-hour weeks That eight-hundred bucks is time well spent And life well-traded For this month's rent So don't you try to bullshit 'bout efficient ergonomics Reducing my potential down to pushing little buttons Call it the merit of earning a living Feeding hedonistic Adaptation Fifteen hours Bed by ten Burn both ends And do it again God bless American capitalism For cutting the brakes on commodification The incentive to make is all we got With no incentive to fucking stop Streaming, phones and fashion that's designed for obsolescence Look at all the poverty that's come from our abundance Lemme work for cheap For my whole life To feed a star-spangled appetite

Bro, it wasn't consumerism that ended Keynesian economics, it was political and ideological realignment. Keynes was often referred to as a socialist, and Hayek's book "The Road to Serfdom" (Hayek's response to Keynesianism) had a major impact during this period. Likewise, the super rich were scheming and funding think tanks and politicians. This was also during the 2nd Red Scare, where anticapitalists and union leaders were being purged. Government policy is what changed and shaped the upcoming neoliberal era for decades bringing an end to the progressive era.

Actually some conservatives and people tried to justify slavery. Such as PragerU had a video praising General Robert Lee for putting down abolitionist John Brown's revolt against slavery. Brown was executed for that. Some conservatives complained about Lee's statue being torn down. Some conservatives said it was good past slavery helped build modern civilization. I think on one of Sam Seder's videos on Florida, he said he met someone who said that slavery helped a African slave get cooking skills. As if people can't want to do that on their own. The good thing is Brandon F has videos criticizing the people trying to justifying slavery. Side note, I saw a clip of a man trying to justify colonization by saying caucasians brought the wheel to ethnic people. As if ethnic people were to dumb to think up the wheel and more. As if that justified the mass violence, slavery, exploitation, and stealing of resources. So yeah, is it any wonder some people think people "need capitalism to force people to work"? Conservatives said people need capitalism to force work so they admit the force. Forcing on the threat of starvation and life and death does sound kind of like slavery. And at gun point based on Marxism Today's video of how the police protect the state and rich people's property and means of production so much. Especially if rich people stole and exploited for that wealth of property. I heard some capitalists just say then go live and survive in the rural. But that's for people who are able to afford it, aka capitalism. There's some rich people who hoard spaces too. Like Bill Gates buying a lof of farm land. People can check out Not Just Bikes on diminishing third places and Cash Jordan on anti-homeless/hostile architecture. More rich businesses hogging public spaces and pushing people and homeless people out of them. Sorry for the rant.

Slashing retirement programs like social security and medicare and medicaid is what makes my list of diagnostic codes that will cover our patients shorter and shorter. I'm a molecular scientist and my main job is detecting cancer at the chromosomal level. I check the insurance and diagnostic codes on every single test requisition and often have to call up the patient's doctor and tell them what code we need to work around the system so the patient doesn't get hit with a $1200 bill. That's not an exaggeration. That is the out-of-pocket cost for just one test that I do. While not all if our patients are elderly, most of them are. And they deserve dignity and respect and to not have to worry about working to pay for rent and grow when they're dealing with cancer. And if I was able to double-check every cytology result, we'd catch a lot more cases early enough that they don't have a chance to become an issue. Sorry, this just infuriated me to no end. The patients may never see me hidden away in the lab, but I really do care about them. The level of disregard Shapiro has for human life is disgusting.

The american healthcare system is insane. I live in britain and currently i conservatives are desperate to privatize the NHS (our free healthcare) to follow up the excessively greedy model of the american healthcare system. They're doing the classic: underfund socialist aspect of society, when it stops working point to it and say "see? This is why free and nationalized things never works" and then privatize everything. Britain is now the second unhappiest country in the whole world but just recently our prime Minister (which we didnt choose btw) said that Britain is a "beacon of non racism and success" or some BS 🤦🏼‍♀️ My american friend was telling me how when she was billed for her son's broken arm it was in the hundreds of thousands. When she asked for the breakdown of costs; he apparently had given birth and that was the reason she needed to spend so much money! Apparently hospital billings in america will just slap on random bills that never had nothing to do with the case in hopes of making more money.

@fawnieee That is the unfortunate reality of our oh-so-amazing American "healthcare system." It's terrible on every level and yeah, sometimes they'll just slap on codes for stuff that didn't happen and hope you won't notice. There is one part of American healthcare that isn't too bad: federal workers, including military personnel, have healthcare paid for through taxes. I have been a military dependent my entire life, first through my father and then through my partner, and I never have to worry about medical costs. @@nsbd90now I would rather people ask my hobbies than job. The job one feels judgey. Like people are judging the salary or if you have a "real job that contributes to society" too. Stan Lee said he felt ashamed for working in comics and that he wasn't doing something like curing cancer. He did realize there was some importance to art and escapism. There's videos of people criticizing people using ai to steal art, like from Kirkpattiecake. In some of those videos they read comments of the pro-ai art people saying they hated artists or that being a artist wasn't a real job. Then people wonder why some artists want socialism. Among other reasons. Like how some artist have to grind so hard to be able to make a living on art. How there's videos about Japanese animators or devs having to work so hard they get sick and keep working, keep pillows and blankets at work to sleep there, or work overnight. Side note, some Japanese trains have curtains around each seat because it's the culture where people and students work so hard they fall asleep in public. And are even praised for that. It's depicted and normalized in anime too. But when some people watch anime they just write that off, even as "cute". People can count the times characters fall asleep in public in anime. I actually dislike if people want to emphasize and tie me to my job too much. Cause jobs are kind of forced. Even if I liked some things about my job. It's like does a slave like his job?

The reason Ben wants poor people to work longer is because he doesn't want a raise in the amount of income that is taxed for social security. To do this would take money out of poor Bennie's pocket, and we can't have that, can we?

Ben argues for multigenerational family living. That means that grandparents live with their children and grandchildren and are supported by them. But what about those who are only children and have no children of their own? Who are they going to rely on?

Imagine thinking that your JOB is your "reason to live". I know there's people who are lucky enough to have a job they love and that it legitimately is a passion for them. But for most people that's not the case at all.

I like how he specifies, "everyone that I know *that's elderly* and retired..." As if he knows a lot of people who retired early.

Ridley Scott can do what he does in his 80s because he just tells other people to do things (like people do to make AI art, but directors get a pass for some reason). Turns out is pretty easy to do that even when you're old and decrepit.

My grandfather is an architect and still works. He is turning 90 next week. He loves his work and still gets commissions. But he is also healthy and fit. Most people are not working in such a creative field. Imagine 70 year old nurses or construction workers.

Ben doesn't seem to realise that "retirement age" doesn't mean someone is going to FORCE you to retire.

Older people should be enjoying their lives through hobbies, hanging out with friends, traveling, and exercising in nice outdoors weather instead of working until you pass away. I believe with AI and technology we can lower the retirement age for people into a younger age.

Shapiro needs to get his facts right. The original retirement age was 55 not 65. Now the age for retirement is between 62 to 67, depending on when you are born. In my case it's 67

The point is that from 20 to 65 as a collective we should put in enough minus the compound interest on whatever the pension was invested in would be enough for those 20 years does ben not know how money and numbers work?
