BEN SHAPIRO: GENIUS OR HERETIC?

Rabbi Yaron Reuven

Күн бұрын

Rabbi Yaron Reuven delivers a shiur about Ben Shapiro, a popular American Jewish speaker, and his impact on Judaism. He argues that Shapiro’s views on Torah are heretical and harmful to his Jewish audience.
Rabbi Reuven criticizes Shapiro’s skepticism towards the soul, afterlife, and reincarnation. He highlights the fact that Shapiro believes in keeping the Torah only for societal benefits, not because HaShem said so, which is a violation of Jewish principles.
Rabbi Reuven warns that Shapiro's popularity and influence are damaging, as many young Jews see him as a credible source of Jewish knowledge. He encourages listeners to be cautious about their sources and to avoid becoming like Shapiro’s followers.

Born in Netanya, Israel, Rabbi Yaron Reuven began his American Dream as a little boy, when his family immigrated to the United States. He went from a newspaper boy at the age of 10, to a well-known self-made Wall Street multimillionaire by the age of 23. During his time in Wall Street, he owned his own private brokerage firm, a hedge fund, and an international insurance agency. He was featured on CNBC, Bloomberg and Chinese NDTV due to his success in the financial industry.
At age 26 he faced a 7-year battle for his life when a simple surgery went wrong. From that moment his life would never be the same. This moment marked the start of a series of miraculous events and an exciting pursuit of truth, ultimately resulting in Rabbi Reuven renouncing his lofty position and success in Wall Street, after 16 years, to become a full-time KIRUV rabbi. His Teshuva story is sure to catch the heart of every listener.
Rabbi Reuven’s shiurim are in English and Hebrew. His classes are focused on spreading the truth and divinity of the Torah through MUSSAR, scientific proofs, and many other methods to reach each individual listener. Rabbi Reuven is the leading educator on the topic of wasting seed in the English language with over 30 hrs of content published online.
Rabbi Yaron Reuven is a proud member of the Igud HaRabbonim (The Rabbinical Alliance of America), a national rabbinic organization founded in 1942. Today, our 900+ members are congregational leaders, religious teachers, chaplains, heads of Jewish organizations and communal leaders united in their commitment to traditional Orthodox Judaism. If Ben Shapiro is not a good speaker and misrepresents the dignity of the Jewish religion, then who do you suggest? Because I don't see a lot of Jewish speakers trying to fight the left and their evil views. I never saw Ben Shapiro as a Rabbi. I just saw him as a figure that speaks about issues for the right on the political spectrum. You do know he's been the most hated person for a while right? Why throw him more hate from his own community? I think that this time you got this wrong. Did you give him a call first to inquire about what he does? If you were to give him advice, what would that be? I'm not a Jew, but I have gained a lot of respect for the Jewish community because of him, you and many others. When I hear about you all throwing insults at each other, makes me wonder if you all are fighting for fame or if you really want to help your own community. Will the famous Hillel, the one who wouldn't get angry, be ok with all of you smearing each other? I'm referring to the leadership figures of the Jewish religion.

I'm sorry but you clearly don't understand. We beed to rebuke heresy when we see it. That's why Hillel, however kind, always made sure to not mislead or say false things about Torah. He represents the jews for millions, but doesn't understsnd the theology of it.

@@terraturn343 Well, only you all know what heresy constitutes in your religion. But the smearing against each other, that will come back to haunt you. With Christians and Muslims, one would always see divisions. Judaism is the one that has been holding the unifying flag for a long time. I'm pretty sure you can work on your differences much better than to embarrass each other this bad. You are an example to the world, and I hope you continue to be one.

@@pianosonata5029 you're right but not completely. We are more unified, but reform and conservative movements, reconstruction, all lead to assimilation. I simply Love this teachings, why? Because you are telling us exactly what our CREATOR, SAVIOR and REDEEMER, want to hear. Why not love the ONE WHO gives us life, freely, as a GIFT! Not because we deserve it, but because HE, blessed is He, wanted to have children that would become a family to HIM. Does this statement sounds familiar to your DNA? Who in this world doesn't want to have a family? Who wants to be alone? I believe no one! Family is a part of us. HaShem, blessed is He, IS A VERY PART OF HIS CREATION. And those who don't believe this truth, is really a miserable person. Life is a GIFT not a privilege! Yet, there are those who deny this truth because of foolish pride and self recognition. These kind of a person is definitely a heretic and idol worshipper who feels comfortable in living a life of personal gain and deceit.

So, (my apologies if I'm understanding incorrectly), at a little before eight minutes the speaker is basically saying that, according to the rules of his religion, that it is forbidden to have any kind of meaningful discussion or conversation with those who's beliefs don't align with your religious doctrine, because of the possibility that it may cause you question your beliefs. It kind of comes across like saying that it's forbidden to dwell or associate with the "unwashed heathens", because their wretchedness may rub off on you. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. ...I truly HOPE that I'm misunderstanding. If not, it's really not a good look, if looking down, (whether in pity, hatred, or a combination of both), on others because they are not part of your particular ethnoreligious group, is actually written into the rules which are the very core of your religious doctrine. That sounds eerily familiar.

it's based on the sources mentioned in the lecture and the premise that many people are ignorant and don't look into the actual SOURCES from the Torah and know very little about Judaism... they could potentially take what they hear at face value and could potentially be influenced into believing even heretical belief sometimes......or some can also be influenced by heresy even if they know better because heretical beliefs release impurity on a person which could influence their mind and behavior as well. Christianity emits the most dangerous type of impurity as the Rabbi mentioned and warned in several of his lectures...

Who cares if it's a "good look"? Either you believe in the religion or you don't. If you change it for optics then you never really believed in it. It was just your "team" or your 'cultural identity'. Religion was around before liberalism and it will be around after it. It doesn't need to and and never should change to suit liberalism's sensibilities about a marketplace of ideas or its ideal of everyone singing kumbaya together as atomised, individual consumers together despite their pre-enlightenment differences. Many of Islam's adherents have this figured out, Judaism's mostly do, and Christians would do well to take note if they want to religiously survive in any meaningful sense.

In the 70s I was just becoming orthodox Hasidic Jew and took classes in the summer seminar with Rabbi Friedman. It was astounding how many people he helped to come into Torah life. You're trashing not only a fellow jew, but you are trashing a Jew who stands for tzidkus and is devoted to the Lubavitcher Rebbes directives of kiruv. Ben Shapiro is highly logical, I don't see a problem with voicing questions, doubts, or saying "I don't know". Like most Jews, he is a 'soul in progress.' Many Jews haven't studied Jewish mysticism. Ben differentiates between personal views & Torah views. He doesn't say Mashiach is a politician..he says Mashiach will be a political figure. HUGE difference. Ben usually parses his words carefully. Perhaps you should be careful with your word selection as well. This seems like loshon hara, Rabbi. Not the first time I've felt this way about your rants. I think it's time to unsubscribe.

@C D Get a better dictionary. Many years ago as I became religiously observant, I didn't believe in all those 13 except as wishful thinking by those I didn't understand. My relationship with Hashem took many years to grow. Ben Shapiro believes in living as an orthodox Jew, is raising his kids to be observant too. We're not here to judge each other, but to help folks as they travel their personal paths. I think the Rabbi needs to choose his words more carefully & not villify other Jews who are on a lower rung of the path we are all trying to follow. If Ben was anti-religion or anti-Torah, I might understand the Rabbi's rhetoric; in this case, I think he's overstepping.

Give one specific thing that was said about Shapiro in the video that isn't true? Shapiro specifically gave answers that people could misconstrue as fact due to the fact that he wears a kippah and his followers see him a genius.....Shapiro was the one who chose to preach his heretical beliefs on Judaism in a debate forum with an atheist that was halachically forbidden to take place to begin with..Shapiro is the one who decided to portray his own take of Judaism with off the cuff heretical answers without looking into them...If only Shapiro would quote kosher religious texts with SOURCES...unfortunately he did not and presented many heretical statements in a forbidden debate with an atheist. the Rabbi has an obligation to warn the public about public speakers that teach heretical beliefs that oppose the sages and needless to say are in partnerships with J and J missionaries else the Rabbi could be held responsible by Hashem for not warning the public when the opportunity was granted. Watch part 2 BEN SHAPIRO AND HIS DANGEROUS FRIENDS to see how disturbing this story really is... The pace of departures among California’s wealthy may have reached the point that lawmakers anticipate a rush to the exits if they adopt a first-in-the-nation wealth tax that’s projected to raise $7.5 billion annually from about 30,000 residents. Watch Shapiro pretty regularly. Love the political commentary, never thought of him as a source for Torah teachings. I actually saw him get wrecked by Joe Rogan when asked about the reasons behind why Jews don't eat pig. Clearly his Torah knowledge is severely lacking. That being said, I can understand how many Jews who don't know our teachings very well could interpret his words are truth, when they are against the Torah, so the Rabbi has a very legitimate point here. To be fair, in the clip you showed he said "political figure" not politician. David Hamelech by virtue of his position as ruler over the kingdom was a "political figure", as were many of his descendants suspected of perhaps being the Mashiach. So I think Shapiro might be right on that one...

19:55 ashkenazim dont say that btw the sefardim added many things into their prayers based on kaballah since the time of the arizal. to the point though, *resurrection* is a fundamental, but the concept of *reincarnation* eventhough it is true, however it is not a fundamental. when speaking a permitted form of loshon hara it is critical to be precise and not to embellish or exaggerate, especially if you are going the route of possibly branding him a heretic, you have to be precise in what he is mistaken as this makes all the difference. once he is a heretic beyond doubt then it is permitted to exaggerate in order to stop people from following him, but i understand you are basing your calling him a heretic mainly on this point and 2 other points. to illustrate the difference between a heretic and an ignoramus, if someone is not aware that there was a king called amon he isnt a heretic, he is called ignorant, as long as he believes that the torah is true, however if he is aware of the verses which speak of him and still denies, then he is denying the torah. in the case of reincarnation i would say even more so he is maximum an ignoramus, if he isnt aware of the sources of something which isnt mentioned explicitly in the torah as reincarnation.

@C D again i agree he shouldnt be spreading heretical views, but at the end of the day he isnt trying to be a torah authority for jews, as he himself admits, but because of the job he has he ends up having to make "interesting" debates and he ends up speaking to all people on the philosohpical spectrum and he has to speak the language of philosphy. and as i pointed out he must believe in some sort of soul as he himself in rabbi reuvens video here says clearly that he believes we go to God after life here, and not with a body, so clearly he believes in something like a soul, just he is calling it something different for some reason. i assume that a soul in nonjewish/philosophical circles has a different meaning than our usage of the word soul. again dont learn torah from him and discourage others from doing so, but to call him a heretic is dangerous and you have to be 100% to say he is that bad. see chap 4 of chafetz chaim and the chap about speaking l'toeles where he says explicitly calling someone a heretic is worse unless he clearly is.

The use of reason is, in fact, an essential part of our faith. Indeed, many Torah Commandments are driven by reason. (Of course, in addition, there are מצוות, Commandments, חוקים, Divine Royal Edicts, which transcend the limits of the human intellect.) Thus, all the Mitzvohs come from God, השם יתברך. Therefore, the importance of reason is also from God.

It is also a chillul Hashem in representing Judaism the wrong way. First, it's very ugly that you put a bad name on a Jew and lie just because you want publicity. He did not say he did not believe in the soul, he said he did not know what happens to the soul after death. He did not say that he keeps the Torah just because it has good things for a person and he does not believe in the soul, he said that it is something that motivates him to keep the Torah. Another thing, Maimonides himself says that the Messiah will be a great leader = a politician. Resurrection, he says it can be done with scientific tools and it does not contradict Judaism.

It is appropriate to respect that he is a rav, but it is also important to note that Ben Shapiro is a political commentator whose views on Jewish subjects are not intended as educational sources. It insufficient to describe him as a heretic. First and foremost he ascribes to a rationalist perspective that is relatively modern in scope and seems to lean on the some of the views of the Rambam. Also, this is what it seemed the rav was trying to refer to when he said that Shapiro doesn't believe in the unseen, but it isn't true to infer that he doesn't believe in God, which he does. Reuven's description was that of a classical apikores in contrast to a rationalist perspective. There are many Jews walking around with rationalist views - is it correct to say that they are all apikorism, which is harder to achieve than that. The same could have been achieved in this video without mentioning his name as the listeners would have been able to figure it out.

9:20 he clearly believes in an afterlife as he says later in the video after death we have communion with God, so when he says he doesnt believe in afterlife or a soul you have to know which version of afterlife he is talking about, as he may be referring to the chrisitianversion of the afterlife. and about him saying there is no soul, that is clearly not what he means as he says we go to God after death, and that is what we call the soul, but he seems to be saying we are the soul and not that the soul is something separate. im not seeing how when taking both statments together how you can say he is kofer of the resurrection and the afterlife. i think the most probing question to clarify what ben really holds is how judaism started, does he believe that Hashem spoke to us at sinai, any clips of him about this?

Furthermore, when he is proven incorrect (such as when he called Rabbi Sacks a heretic for not believing in the Exodus, even though Rabbi Sacks has stated that he believes in the Exodus and never made such a statement), he does not retract his statement. He just calls people he disagrees with heretics. This is חלול ה׳ and לשון הרע.
