The format actually STOPPED Trump from talking, their microphones were turned off so that they could not interrupt each other. This benefited Trump, as it stopped him from interrupting/saving Biden from talking. Forcing Biden to talk was the downfall for Biden and helpful to manage Trumps tendency to interrupt. Thought the "no audience" situation was going to hurt Trump, but it became a benefit.

That was a good opportunity for Trump to actually reprove Biden, and say that he is here for the American people not to discuss golf. And emphasize how serious the election is... Think about it, Biden did not come up with that comment on his own. And another part that was bad was when Trump was talking about the cognitive test. NOBODY and I repeat NO ONE CARES about the cognitive test. That was a GREAT opportunity to talk about how Joe couldn't stand trial because the prosecutor deemed in mentally incompetent. And then he could have elaborated on "if he's not mentally competent for 1 trial, how he governing the country" Trump gets too defensive, that's his problem. They wanted Trump to talk about himself and afterwards they could slander and fact check him. That bit about stormy Daniels... He shouldn't have responded to that, that's between him and his wife. Imagine if Trump STRICTLY spoke about Biden failures in very specific details? The media would be focused on playing defense for Biden, but that would only serve to remind people of Biden's failures regardless and give Fox and other more conservative news fact checking material, and also to demonstrate how left wing media lies. Which would force them to tell some truth. This debate is about getting independents, undecided voters, and even Democrats voters that are moderate. Trump won't get those votes if he's talking about himself. He just needs to remind them of why they're undecided. You and I, we are decided. But if we want Trump to win, it's not about pleasing us with smart retorts about his golfing skills, it's about the other voters.
