He literally doesent understand that language is a made up thing. Like English did not exist in today’s form until like around the 1400s-1500s, and even then has changed a bunch. The way he speaks would not have been considered proper in the 1700s especially in academia I imagine.

Well, let's-let's say that maybe Shapiro isn't really an intellectual. Let's say that he's just, promoting like-- let's say, an image --- so that he can take advantage of- let's say- the not-so-intelligent and let's say that maybe he doesn't actually know that much, and uses so-called facts to misinterpret stuff and build a narrative... Yeah? Let's just say that he doesn't know what he's talking about and just replaces making good points with fast talking. Let's say that he sometimes calls out actual accurate facts but then goes to, let's say "great lengths" to--- to make it look like what he's saying is true by, let's say, omitting some information or making correlations where none exist or maybe, let's just say, that he sometimes interpret some correlations as causation and vice-versa. Let's just say that interpreting data is hard only when you're trying to do it correctly! Let's say that his tic of saying "let's say" constantly is just there because he's not actually talking facts but, instead, let's say he's actually just... uhh--- keeps, let's say, bringing up theoretical situations and circumstances out of his, let's say, ass but he says it with such conviction that those that, let's say want to believe those--- well you can say "facts" but just for the sake of argument let's say "lies" because that's what they are, by sin of omission and misinterpretation or, let's say, lack of forethought, and that's what his audience wants: lies dressed up as facts that confirm their biases. Let's just say he's a sham and a con artist. Shapiro's a fraud and more often than not will completely ignore facts that don't follow his narrative. I'd say that "let's say" is more of his catchphrase than the other one since it's what you're likely to hear most of the time when he talks unedited but also because it perfectly encapsulates his real tactic: building a theoretical reality where his words are the truth so that he doesn't have to be burdened by facts and can just spew lies and half-truths to DESTROY his interlocutors. He's completely superficial, smoke and mirrors, thunder and noise. He has a point to make but in order to do so he needs to build a whole other reality every time he does it which says very much about the point he has to make and how valid it really is. ... And that bit about people selling their flooded houses once the sea level rises is absolutely golden -- much deep-thinking there.

Singular they is in the dictionary. For when you don’t know the person, like if you were looking for a criminal, you might use ‘they’ because you don’t know if it’s a male or female.
@TheMrVengeance
@TheMrVengeance 4 жыл бұрын
@@obviouslymatt6452 - It's also been commonly used for far longer; if you're going to be away from the phone for a bit, you might tell a colleague: _"If someone calls, tell them to call me back."_ ... If someone (singular pronoun) calls, tell them (singular gender-neutral they/them) to call me back. I've never heard anyone say: _"They him or her to call me back."_ It's also used very often in the academic world, which you'd think someone with multiple degrees would know. If you're quoting another scholar but they're for instance only ever referred to as Dr. J. Doe. And you can't uncover through further digging whether that J is for Jane or Jeremy. You quote them, as I just did, with they/them. _"In their influential work on pronouns Dr. J. Doe (2020) wrote: ....etc."_

"They" is also commonly used as a singular pronoun on the West coast. Oh, and in Texas I remember hearing people use it that way too. I'm going to say it's probably _widely_ accepted as such. Until someone like Shapiro wants to be a d*ck to people just because they're different. That's the only reason he's suddenly "caring about grammar".
@sandraneaton99
@sandraneaton99 5 жыл бұрын
@@Caitlin_TheGreat is it? *shrug* Personally, using singular "they" to refer to non-binary people always seemed to me an intuitive extension of the common use I'd always heard - I actually started using it in my own fiction writing before I'd learned it was a thing other people actually did.(I was baffled when I first heard ze/hir is a thing, because, that's what "they" is for? xD) I assumed it was a local dialect thing only when it became apparent it /wasn't/ intuitive to other people. But, well, I'm not surprised if it's common other places too, Minnesotans aren't as weird as people tend to claim we are. Though, yeah, Shapiro's pedantic linguistic prescriptivism isn't at all unique. See the whole "changing the defintions of words" shtick people on the right use all the time - this is just a thing they do to portray their own bigotry as the natural, default perspective. Using it with singular "they" is just...an /exceptionally/ stupid example of it. And I'm rambling. Stop rambling, Sandra, god...

Justinian the Great I’d respond properly, but the irony of someone claiming other people have “0 iq“ in the same sentence as that jumble of angry squirrel farts you spouted is too distracting. I do hate to call it a sentence, but I suppose that was what it aspired to... before a witch’s curse removed the part of your brain responsible for constructing coherent messages. Going to uni is pretty common, and whilst I’d give him some credit on the Harvard front, he did law, not philosophy, English, any Science, psychology or something even tangentially related. And by his own admission, he did what his course demanded of him to get the degree, and completely ignored what they said afterwards. Seems like I’ve seen more of Bong Sharlito Copley than you have. His course did teach him to be almost as intelligible as you! Have a nice day, Justinian the Less-than-Cogent.

I always specify "you plural" whenever I think there might be ambiguity. :P I get your point, nonetheless, if "you" can be both singular and plural, there should be no problem for "they" to be likewise.
@raynafae
@raynafae 5 жыл бұрын
Felipe Hindi Oh absolutely it can be confusing. English is so strangely designed; understanding it seems to rely on context clues that can easily be left out or missed by accident. In fact, most people who object to the use of singular "they" will still use it when referring to a stranger, or to an individual with unknown gender, or to a hypothetical individual. I haven't met anybody who uses "he/she" in that instance.

@@hindigente Try using 'you all' or other things like 'all of you', 'you guys', etc... In my Latin class we had to demonstrate we could tell singular from plural second person by using 'you all' every time we translated a plural even though 'you' itself would have been correct. It can be a little awkward but it does provide more clarity.

The 'it's a made up word' thing erks me to the depth of my soul. All words. Are made up. All of them. They are all made up, and they are constantly changing. And some of us just deal with that. We just accept new uses of words as we learn them. Even if it makes no sense to us. And if we see a new word used enough. We can figure out its usage. Like. We all do that shit all the time.

I’ve used “they “as a singular pronoun as long as I can remember to refer to 3rd parties if I don’t/didn’t want to reference their gender. And that was well before trans/non-binary issues became mainstream. It’s pretty normal in American speech already, just a minor transition to accommodate for people that’d prefer they/them as their pronouns. Not really sure why this is an issue
@JohnSmith-fz1ih
@JohnSmith-fz1ih 5 жыл бұрын
Same. In fact there were times when I’ve used they to refer to a specific person because their gender was unknown, and this was well before I’d heard of anything relating to non-binary gender. A simple example is if I know someone has a friend called Sam. I want to refer to Sam, but I don’t know if Sam is male or female. This is the precise same usage as referring to someone non-binary as “they”. It’s nothing new at all. Not to mention that Shapiro should be ecstatic about this usage of “they”. He’s countless times whinged about having to remember all number of pronouns. Here’s the solution; a single pronoun to cover all of those confusing non-binary people. It’s the perfect solution but he’s mad about it. Almost as if remembering different pronouns wasn’t an actual concern at all. Almost as if that was a cover for his real fear. Almost.

Ehmm..... The English "You" is plural. So when you meat Ben, you have to....., ooopps, I mean when thou meat Ben, thou has to say: "Hi Mr. Shapiro, nice to meet thou." And in History were many cases for use of pronouns in plural for singular persons. The English "you", the German "Sie" or the plural majestatis "Wir, der König..." (We, the King) , or "Ihre Hoheheit" (Your highness). Maybe switch to the japanese model where there are no "real" pronouns. So "You" becomes "Master" or "Mistress".

The “facts don’t care about your feelings” mantra has always fascinated me because it seems to imply that there’s something inherently wrong, feminine, emasculating about even acknowledging feelings - feelings are nothing more than an impediment to thinking logically. It explains why the IDW and the reactionary movement it represents is such a uniquely male phenomenon. It’s always struck me as odd, because being in touch with your feelings is an essential part of living a fulfilling life, getting along with others, etc

@@AZ-ty7ub I'd disagree that it denies emotion. It's a catchphrase, remember that facts only don't care about YOUR feelings. Theirs are perfectly safe, meaning that they can use emotion to raise fear, terror while you using emotion to awaken empathy is supposed to be "against facts". There is no possible fascism without fascist propaganda and that heavily relies on fear.
@AZ-ty7ub
@AZ-ty7ub 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mish844 I definitely agree with that, and is also why I would say the fascism is doomed to (eventually) fail. They only have room for what can be used to maintain and assert power, anything outside of that- so called "soft" emotions, empathy, displays of vulnerability, etc, is suppressed. It has to be because it undermines the projection of strength necessary to maintain power. Philosphy Tube did a good video on the topic- "Why the Left will win".
