Dr. Mehmet Oz tells TODAY’s Matt Lauer that the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test may have saved actor Ben Stiller’s life, but says elevated PSA numbers do not always mean a patient has cancer. Dr. Oz says the biggest takeaway is that eating the right foods and exercising are some of the best ways to reduce the chances of dying from prostate cancer.

It’s a first step…doesn’t mean you have cancer…but if it turns out to be cancer…could save your life. My psa doubled in 2 years. Prostate cancer…but caught early. Information never hurts

PSA damaged my health because Doctors opted for biopsy which was very bad idea since my prostate was infected

The PSA test is easy and relatively inexpensive. A simple blood test for Pete's sake! Oz is wrong. Get the test. Can be a life saver.

your right but the problem is they have a problem with set up that test if your not showing reason to have that done they won't recommend it they will give you a digital rectal exam finger in rectum to feel the prostate you have to show sign to have psa done in most cases

My PSA came in at 70! Dr. Oz is absolutely ignorant. PSA screening is essential. Oz sounds confused. I followed up with an MRI and a biopsy and found I have cancer, due to PSA screening.

Oz is explaining the new standard of practice, that's all. His point is that millions of men who do not have cancer also have elevated PSA levels and then undergo unncessary clinical wok-ups, like prostate biopsies, MRIs and CT Scans. BPH along causes PSA to go up so in fact, PSA is not a prostate cancer detection tool in itself, but the first thing thatmay indicate enlargement, either benign or otherwise. Today, the standard of care is this; the patient discusses his wishes for the PSA and the patient decides. I'm 60, and yes, I have always decided to have my PSA checked, and have argued with my PCP about this since he didn't want to check in in the absence of symptoms. If you're a black man or have a family history, really consider your options. I, for one, will check my PSA levels as I continue to age, for sure.

You're right BPH does cause PSA to go up, but there's no harm in doing routine MRI's if the PSA continues to be high.

@@christianjames92 An ongoing rise in PSA, especially above 4, 5 upwards, needs investigating and should not simply be dismissed to a man's age or prostate size.

@@anthonydavid5121 I never said that? I said that BPH causes inflated PSA, but there's no harm in getting an MRI to rule out a cancer diagnosis or mass. Someone with BPH is almost always going to have an elevated PSA.

@@christianjames92 In some men, especially younger, yes, but and MRI is not always indicated in some men with BPH and a rising PSA, especially for men in the 70s and 80s who likely already have an indolent prostate cancer but will die of something else.

@@robertosso5210 Continue to monitor. It's fine at 1.91, I would start being more concerned if I was approaching 4, which is the upper limit of accpetable. Also, pay attnetion to how you pee and how is changes as you age. It likely measn nothing!!!!

Since I’m a runner I bet that overtraining is one of the things that can raise your psa! I remember in November 1995 a doctor telling me that I need to get my life in line because I was going to die. About 4 months later I ran the 100th running of the Boston marathon. Think there is a connection between a higher psa and hard training?
@christianjames92

I completely disagree. It's a potential symptom that can catch the cancer earlier. There's other factors that will cause an elevated PSA no doubt, but you would rather get the MRI and biopsy and catch it earlier than not. An elevated white blood cell count doesn't mean you have leukemia but it should be checked up on.

Yes, it is correct sometimes, but the PSA gives a false positive quite a bit more than half the time, this can lead to unnecessary and potentially painful subsequent tests if you’re part of the majority that it does give a false positive to. Also, around 15% of the time it gives a false negative, which is arguably even worse.

This guy is confused. People don't have a an elevated PSA and them have surgery. There is something called a 'Biopsy ' , which takes samples and sent to be analyzed for the presence of cancer cells or naught. 1 out of 1000, that was me. If I didn't have a regular PSA I would not have known I have cancer. I still have cancer and I'm trying to decide what kind of treatment I would like to have . Please don't have Dr. Oz giving medical advice to those who have cancer. He might just rule out the treatment which is right for me. I knew I am not the only one with prostate cancer. Instead, have him giving advice on toenail fungus, or indigestion. Perhaps you can have someone on who has survived their ordeal using alternative treatments. Thank you for your concern.

As of 1 March 2023 the Prostate Specific Antigen test (PSA TEST shall not be permitted to be performed in Iceland or any place subject to its jurisdiction. The PSA Test has been repeatedly proven to cause more harm to public health than good through numerous international studies. The Althing finds and decrees that this is unacceptable and that good cause exists for the nation of Iceland, and as of 1 March 2023, to prohibit the use of the PSA Test for all purposes. All instruments previously utilized to carry out the implementation of the PSA Test shall hereby be destroyed and the importation of any test to make use of a PSA test or any of the instruments used therein shall hereby deemed illegal. Violations of this Act shall result in the revocation of the license of the medical provider utilizing the PSA test and subject those who violate thus Act subject to both civil and criminal penalties.

Hey Ben....notice we never see pro athletes wearing 'blue' to commemorate prostate cancer awareness day? EVER? More of the usual left wing ideology which assumes if you are male, you must be rich, and privileged. I have prostate cancer. After i had my prostate removed my PSA rose again, indicating i still had some malignant cells in my body. I had 39 radiation treatments, and now my PSA is undetectable. While having my treatments, i met many men with prostate cancer, who had no idea men get it. Several men i meant did not even know they had a prostate gland before they got prostate cancer. Gee, i wonder why nobody is interested in educating men about prostate cancer? This is nothing more than the usual leftist/feminist double standard which implies all men are bad and deserve what they get, and all women are saints, and we need to be sure that they are aware of the risky diseases in their life, and that they are seen as the victims that they deserve to be.
