My dad took his PSA test it was so damn high shortly after the test he couldn't walk, then we took him to the hospital they said the drug they gave him short his PSA up the other drug put him in a chair. He passed away some time later. I wish we had this information he would be alive today. Thank you very much please keep it up.

Having high PSA doesn't affect your ability to walk. There's no relationship whatsoever between your PSA level and your ability to walk.

@@herrickinman9303 Like I said the test showed he had a High PSA level. His previous PSA test was Normal so they put him on a drug they said it will keep it low. They lied this drug made it high then another drug made him loose function in his legs shortly after he passed 😔

Absolutely correct! Any bouncing of the prostate does elevate the psa. I’ve been on hormone therapy for 13 years and the major reason for high levels is recumbent, stationary bike exercise and long motorcycle rides. I now stop any similar activities for two weeks prior to a blood draw.

Heavy Deadlifts and Squats will also increase your PSA levels. My doctor disagreed that it would. We proved it by me doing them the day before my blood test and then a second test when I had not been lifting heavy. Increase as much as two points

You're right Joe! Any new study I find I will share. Interval training and speed work will definitely affect PSA levels, as they usually have a lot of impacts (in the form of small hops and bounces) and a heavy cardiovascular component.

For the last 2yrs my psa has been increasing and my age is 65. This last 12 months psa has been 12.4. Ive had 2 MRI scans which shows inflammation and slightly enlarged prostrate but no cancer. I exercise regularly especially on the treadmill for up to 80min. Must admit i am a touch nervous as my dad and grandad both passed away with prostrate cancer.

I also had an mri scan 3wks and seen Radiologist and he reassured me their is nothing cancerous showing only slight inflammation. No I'm alright at night time I might need to visit the toilet maybe once a night. I'm on Omnic 0,4 capsules which relaxes the prostrate. I hope everything works out for you.

Damn you are good! I am not quitting running because of doctors! I have had false information from them for at least 30 years! The worst was about 4 months before my 1996 Boston Marathon. I will always remember the doctor telling me “ You better get your shit together you do not have much time to live!” I ran the Boston Marathon in April!

Thanks James! I will always remember my doctor telling me to quit running because of a higher psa. The year before he told me running does not affect psa. I noticed with getting my psa test at a quiet place that took blood samples and I had a incredibly less blood pressure my psa had dropped. There really needs to be more studies anywhere but at a doctors office!

Fyi, I pulled a groin muscle doing leg press. Two weeks later I went on vacation. Rode a stationary bike with unpadded seat, had lots of sex. Went the next week for a physical. My PSA quadrupled. 1.2 to 4.8. The Md was all over repeating then biopsy etc. I waited 6 months till I had no muscle issue, or chronic sensitivity. Repeat was 1.8. 6 months later 1.2. I was in my 60’s at the time.

11 years ago I called my primary physician for a urinary infection (burning while peeing). She told me to come in for an exam, including a PSA. She called me and asked me to schedule an appointment with a prostate doctor, but wouldn't tell me why. I thought about it and called her back and asked why? She said that my PSA was high and that I should be checked, but didn't want to tell me how high so I wouldn't be worried. She ended up telling me that it was 8.5. I got an appointment 3 weeks later, and the doctor was furious that she tested me while I had an active infection!!! The PSA was now down to 5.3. After another month it was down to 4.3. Had an MRI and biopsy, volume was 49. I was 58 years old at the time, and now 69. I have had 3 biopsies, 5 MRI's, and 2 DNA tests, and PSA tested every 6 months. Current PSA is 7.2. Prostate volume is now 80, I pee fine, and my current doctor has suggested that I only test once a year now, that something else is going to kill me. Now to my question. What is your perspective on how a urinary or bladder infection affects the PSA? I don't see much of that talked about. Thanks.

At 66yo, I trail run every morning 4 miles and then do CrossFit. If I get a blood draw after a trail run my PSA jumps from a consistent 0.7 to 1.2 PSA. After CrossFit but before a trail run.. no difference - always a steady 0.7.

What is your view on cases where PSA level raises in patient that's had a radical prostatectomy. In my case (73 yo, helthy and active). Had surgery in 2005 and PSA level was always (ckeck every 6mo) bellow .05, checked Oct 30, 2023 and it went up to 2.4. Do you think that it should be rechecked in 30 days or a 90-day wait for a new test is alright.? Thanks

I learned that my PSA level was .75 this past June. I’m 54 years old, I don’t smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs (prescribed or recreational) except for eye drops for my glaucoma. I walk everyday, 5-10 miles or more but I don’t lift weights enough & if I do they’re light, 10-15lb dumbbells. Will my routine put me at risk for prostate cancer?

Nitric oxide is a global vasodilator, so it does have an effect on the blood vessels of the prostate, causing increased blood flow. So I would say it might increase PSA readings, especially when combined with exercise. Just be mindful that after you start those supplements a potential increase in PSA might be from them, not a problem in prostate per se. Let your doctor know.

Any idea of by what % exercise would increase one's PSA? When I have my periodic tests I normally try and have it around the same time in the morning, and take an easy stroll to the clinic for the blood test. Am also someone with low grade prostate cancer and BPH (had TURP surgery few weeks ago). PSA was 14.5 even while on Flomax and Avodart, but thankfully off those pills now.

He cited a study that showed a mere 10% increase in PSA after exercise. Your elevated PSA was due to having an enlarged prostate. As your prostate continued to grow, the number of PSA-producing cells in your prostate continued to rise, and therefore your PSA continued to rise. Flowmax is an alpha blocker. It doesn't affect the size of your prostate or your PSA level. Nor does Flowmax stop your prostate from growing. It just makes it easier for you to pee while having an enlarged prostate. But as your prostate continues to grow, the Flowmax will become less and less effective, to the point that you may need a TURP. Avodart is a beta blocker. Taking Avodart for 4-6 months, can reduce prostate size and therefore lower PSA. I assume you needed a TURP because your prostate had grown so large that the Flowmax had stopped working. A TURP doesn't cure BPH. Even after a TURP, your prostate will continue to grow, and as it continues to grow, your PSA will continue to rise. Eventually, you may need to take Flowmax again or have another TURP.

There is an arbitrary level of 4 ng/mL in many countries, but that does not mean you have prostate cancer. There are some men with over 8 without prostate cancer and some with less than 3 with prostate cancer. Most important is to see the change (and rate of change) from your previous test. Good luck!

Hi Bern, that is an interesting question. Is your prostate removed entirely? if so then PSA in the blood would only exist if there were metastases, in which case then any form of exercise, especially aerobic would cause an increase in PSA, as the increased blood flow would pass through the metastatic sites.

I have not come across any information about coffee or caffeine in regards to PSA. It's important to remember that PSA is just a metric, not the cause of the issues. However, plain coffee without any milk or sugar when drunk in moderation (That is one to two cups per day, maximum), can have health benefits. I hope this helped!

Hey William thanks for the question. I wouldn't suspect so, unless there is another issue there, such as an enlarged prostate. So the issue is not the masturbation per se, (although nothing should be done at excess) but the enlarged prostate. There's a lot you can do to reduce an enlarged prostate and manage the symptoms. Yes, and type of exercise may cause a transient increase in PSA, but aerobic seems to cause a higher increase, due to the increase of heart rate for a longer period. That does not mean it will give you prostate cancer. It may however give you a less accurate PSA blood test result

I am 66 year old and have been a competitive, long distance runner for 52 years now, plus, plant-based (vegan) for 50 years. I had my first PSA test in 2016 (at age 59) which came back at 2.8, then the following test a year later was just 1.4, then 1.3 the next, then 1.4, and 1.5 two years after that. Now suddenly it's back up to the original reading of 2.8 like in 2016. I have no symptoms at all, but was diagnosed with BPH way back in my mid 40's.... Also note - I have taken low dose 20mg Lipitor (statin) for 26 years now. ..and yes, I did run 10K the evening before my latest PSA test last week. Also, the testing centre mentioned that a new "analyser" in now being used for this test... So what gives? Why did my PSA result suddenly drop from 2.8 to 1.4 back in 2016/17....and then stay at that low level for 5 years, and now (supposedly) go back up to the original (exact) 2.8 level again. Should I be concerned, and get a re-test....with zero exercise beforehand? Cheers...
