Europeans, try to see that as a “western” problem, but many Americans see this as a European problem. Ukraine is a country that wants to join the EU. European support to Ukraine is an investment in a future EU state. Every dollar the US spends is considered a a divestment by many; that could have gone to paying off the US debt or hurricane victims.

He's called Putin's ally more often because the person sees him as Putin's preferred winner due to his previous statements about the US military relationship with Europe and NATO, and his doubts about supporting Ukraine. Maybe he'll be reigned in a bit in power and switch to a more conventional attitude. I wouldn't bet on it though. I think that depends on who he surrounds himself with and that's likely to be the people who are most likely to give him the answers he wants to any questions he asks them, which isn't usually the best way to have a team around you but it seems to be his nature to need that. Conversely, I think he might go in heavier with support towards Israel and that might escalate the conflicts in the Middle East. Not that there was any hope of any of that being solved by this US election but, based on rhetoric, Netanyahu should be happy. And who knows in East Asia with Taiwan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Japan. I don't think that'll erupt because I think the only real radical country there is North Korea, and without their large allies sharing that then they are somewhat stuck to domestic stuff and postulating. So hopefully nothing of major importance happens there for four years but, with talk of tariffs and all that, it's possible too that tensions escalate there. A dove, a hawk, both things at different times....who knows? He's transactional and can have his ego massaged so we'll see who pulls his strings best. Whichever way he goes his supporters will acclaim it.

US weapons makers are going to start to see some reluctance on their ACTUAL ALLIES buying weapons systems that they then need to ask permission to use effectively. Same goes for Germany. Already Poland has procured South Korean weapons vs. LEOPARD. Same is happening with Japan and South Korea with Stealth Fighters. Aren't the US not funding hospitals etc just for the sake of paring taxes to the bone? Europe's failure to fund defence is proving short sighted (but if you shake a leg you could probably at least have a workable plan to rapidly upscale production if this now turns into a worse condition/emergency), but I don't see how American cuts in social welfare somehow come from defence spending rather than simply _choosing_ the option of underfunding? Sounds like an excuse to "buy off" the voter who can be distracted by "someone to blame". It would be interesting to see what gets scrapped at end of life if the supply of items scheduled to be sent to the dump is cut off. Will the USA scrap the tanks it didn't send to Ukraine next year, the year after? Might be a news item, even if the hot part of the war comes to a temporary end.

Mr. Wallace raises a very valid point about the lack of defense spending by other NATO partners. If I was American I'd be frustrated too. Trump was definitely able to play this valid card towards his win. It shouldn't just be the US spending all the cash and protecting others. We would be far stronger if we all contributed.

True (and this is a geo-/-political risk I've been warning about since around 2014), but don't forget how Trump lied when he claimed that only he has raised this issue. On the contrary, harping about NATO free-riding has long been a perennial issue between the US and our NATO partners. Probably every POTUS since the fall of the Berlin Wall has warned NATO about cheaping out on our shared defense commitments, but to no avail, and Obama publicly raised the alarm with NATO on more than one occasion.
