When towing, I've been told the 2 lines connecting between the stern of the leading boat to the bow of the towed boat should cross over to form an X pattern. It works, probably an engineering thang and you still need someone on the towed stern tiller.

For what it's worth, have you tried crossing to tow lines over like into an X pattern. This controls the sideways movement of the bow and stops the 'seeking' motion. Like you say, not all days are idyllic, especially when you need to be somewhere.

i dont know nothing! but on the K&A we were told towing is a science, the propeller is dragging water from under the towboat and throwing it against the bow of rambler, which is attached by ropes. if the rope is too short poor rambler will just flap about in the strong and focused aquawind, or too long and you have lost all control. maybe this is why rambler was going side to side.

When towing, you are best off with cross-straps (the left dolly goes of the right side of the bow, and vice versa). Also, a rudder on the outboard will help even in normal operation. Tie the tiller straight on the towed boat will help. On sharp corners if you have someone steering, get them to steer the opposite way and the towed boat becomes a massive rudder which will help the motor do the turn. You would find it easier to tow with a deeper drafted boat as more of the flow will go under the boat, however for the weight of the springer I'm surprised the engine was struggling alot, but you do need to use more power than you would normally, and anything on the prop will make things worse. It is a useful tool in locks where you can get both boats into the same lock as then you free up a crew member for the operation of the lock.

Hello from Canada Emily and Ben - I have used a tow-rope on the water, but on land I have also used a steel tow-bar which has the advantage of not allowing the vehicle behind to overtake me or bump in to me when I slow down. It might be possible to use something similar - you can even install one (wood?) on both port and starboard side of Rambler. Love your relaxed style - Happy New Year to you both - Stephen Burnett in Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Towing difficulties , yup I understand your opinion . My experience was with a motorbike , weighing 500 pound usually , but the engine was not in it , as the frame needed a weld and the engineer was three miles away ! So I got towed my friend's similar 750 , using trebled up washing line . Do not try this kids , I made it , thousands would not and never again ! My lovely father in law had been a racer back in the days when he was younger , just after 1945 , and he and a mate would drive to races in their race cars . These cars were big block American saloons that officers had left behind that were cheap to buy as no one wanted as fuel was rationed then ; John converted them to run on methanol which was not rationed ...clever lad . Anyway , so they did their racing day one time and his friend's car engine failed . They had thought about this before and had a length of scaffold tube , clamps and tools with them . With both steering their cars home , joined by the tube , John became aware of being pushed by his mate's car which had mysteriously got it's power back again ! He had loads of stories and had pictures to back his claims , like racing with Sterling Moss . Sadly gone from us now , bless him . How this helps you I m not sure ! I wonder if you could devise a system where you push Rambler so that you do not loose the steering and keep Rambler from tipping sideways . Two scaffold tubes , one per side , might do it . If you must tow , what about two equal length ropes attached to opposite sides of the vessels ? In addition , maybe of use all the time on Rambler , some vertically mounted boards on the sides of the boat , of some width , might help with stability in towing and usual motoring . The boards could be swivelled up and down , as needed . This idea is not mine , it was used in ancient times ! Oh yes . Guy at my pub was a lorry driver . He had the honour of carrying a Bae Space Satellite on his low loader ( towing story) down south to some port , police escorts , the lot . He drove under a railway bridge that turned out to be too low and the satellite got knocked off its cradle . One paper reported the incident under the banner of ' Satellite Falls To Earth ' . Not a tall story at all ! Laugh , we wet ourselves down the pub . Have a great new year and leave the babies out of it . Alan might have kittens ! Lol . I am jesting , enjoy yourselves !

Well that was enthralling for a nerd. I reckon you're right, being so close Rosie's prop will be like a bow thruster on Rambler. The chances of splitting the thrust equally down each side will be next to zero and as soon as it isn't it'll just make it worse. A long line could work better, but comes with a whole new set of problems.
@winstonsmith844110 ай бұрын
You could readily tow, but as you said, both the boats would need to be properly fitted-out, your towing boat would need a properly sized engine, and the appropriate gearbox. Happy New Year!

So pleased to find your channel this year and been eagerly awaiting each weeks update throughout! As an ex live-aboard I hugely miss life on the water and have to make do living beside it but your channel has helped me stay sane whilst adapting back to land. Great music benny (i play cornet and got lots of funny looks practicing that on the boat) and you make a lovely couple. Emily's eating face always makes me chuckle. One small ask - please do come back up north!! I'd love to see you over the rochdale and back around the huddersfield. It seems you did that just before starting the vlog 😞. Saying that you'd probably get stuck in a pound for months / years waiting for repairs. Seems almost impossible to get anywhere other than Leeds around here (wakefield) even in summer due to closures. All the best for 2024 - peace, love & narrowboats 🙂

If you ever have to tow Rambler again you would find that a long oar and 2 rowlocks (one spare) will be more effective to control when towing at your low speeds . ' Using the oar as a rudder blade and 'rowing' to change direction. A Bow fender would help too on Rambler to prevent rear- ending the larger boat. Lifting the outboard would reduce the drag and help the big boat engine load and avoid debris choking the outboard. Hope this helps! Happy New Year Ian McDonald

Agreed that towing is a drag on the engine - at sea we do this on long lines - mainly due to sea swell, but it also stops the prop wash hitting the boat being towed. I don't think long line towing is practical on a canal - we don't have banks and other craft nearby at sea. The idea of pushing rather than pulling is interesting - like the tugs on the Mississippi. You'd probably need a bit of a frame to keep Rambler perfectly in place ahead of Roshine (is that spelt correctly?) (probably a 2" x 4" or a 4" x 4" on port and starboard along with fixing points and a couple of securing lines to complete the rig, but it would be more like driving a longer boat than dealing with towing issues. For simplicity you'd probably want to lift the outboard out the way and have Roshine's bow button pushing against Rambler's outboard mounting pint on the transom. I guess that could also allow you to declare Rambler as a butty for cheaper CRT fees. In places with larger locks you'd be fine, but the idea of having to split the 2 boats for locks each time is still a chore that is less than ideal, especially if the outboard is not in place to use through the locks. How do your friends with Chip the Butty manage? I note that quite a number of fuel boats have a full size butty with them. That could be something interesting to study - for vlog content too! I'm not trying to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, just sharing a few musings. We love watching your vlogs and enjoy Bennies music too. We started watching vlogs with the idea of planning ahead to when I can retire and we can move back to UK so we can drift around the country for some time until we have to settle in one place - hoping that our son will have put down permanent roots by then - he works in UK now, so yes, yet another Christmas away from family - 4th in a row. Happy New Year to the 5 of you (Ben, Emily, Allen, Roshine and Rabler) from the two of us, Tim and Jalika, Malaysia.

After spending years towing boats, you had rambler too close so your propwash was hitting the bow and destroying the thrust, put it on a longer tow line and because it has no rudder hang a small bucket off the stern that will keep it straight.
