Something that took me from bad, half-folded raleys to full extended and nice raleys was correcting my head position. Early on, I wanted to look forward so that I could see and control my kite, but this did not allow me to extend into a proper raley. As soon as I learned to commit, look down at the water with my head between my elbows my raleys improved very significantly.

Your tutorials are the best Ben. Without people like you kiteboarding would be a bunch of people mowing the grass with straight faces. For me, it worked better to stay hooked in and learn the body movement. It's odd but my muscle memory for a good pop fades if I have a few weeks without wind. I find myself returning to the basic technique to "reinstall" the movement in my brain lol.

Super! 🔝 it's time that I want to try a Raley but I'm not sure if I can control my kite unhooked... what about if I start with an hooked in raley? (on a guide I see that call it galey) I mean would be easier?
@kulfonbustardo1588
@kulfonbustardo1588 4 ай бұрын
Just practice rideing DOWNWIND while unhooked. First for 10 meters then hook back in then go for 20 30 100 maybe throw in a little carveing straight down wind both sides like your at a cable park then hook back in etc this will get you off the dreaded 2dimensional left right up down kiteing that hooked in riders are stuck at.

Can you help me understand the dynamics why there is such a profound difference in technique between a wakeboarding air raley and an unhooked kite raley? An air raley requires you hold your arms in while a kite raley requires them to go (correct me if I'm wrong?) progressively out as you scoop. On an air raley, if you let your arms out (before the release), you give up the power you've built in your progressive cut. TBH I'm not good at air raleys but this was how I was taught by a number of people and berated when I'd let the arms out. What happens to the kite when you let your arms out? You'd think the kite falls back which I thought is not what you want to develop slack? And how do you not lose the power you've built with your progressive cut? I've seen the pros like Aaron Hadlow and Maxime Chabloz do exactly as you describe.
@BenBeholzVlogs
@BenBeholzVlogs 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. I believe that the Raley in wakeboarding requires a lot more strength and technique. The lines are shorter, and the pull point is lower. However, I also think that if you can do the Raley on the cable, you can probably do it with the kite as well. The reverse might not be as quickly achievable. At the cable, you learn the pop because if you can't do it there, it hurts ;)
@cyberanswer
@cyberanswer 4 ай бұрын
@@BenBeholzVlogs I think I've got it. With the kite it may overload the kite and/or send the kite too far forward having the effect of losing power. Also it's a like a living thing which will open up and take a breath of air whereas the cable is mechanical, fixed speed - any letting up will thwart the tension required to slingshot you (due to the reasons you pointed out). And yes, getting it wrong on cable is quite dangerous. Thanks for your answer and analysis.

Great video. To me a proper pop is the hardest thing in kiteboarding. For me it's because I'm more used to doing them on solid ground like a snowboard. Where it's a more abrupt push of the ground with an attempt to bent the board like a springboard off the tip. I think with kiteboarding the aim is to keep it more smooth so not an aggressive increase into the last bit of the carve but more gentle and consistent pressure through the carve. Is that right? I find that pressure tough to judge and optimize which often leads to over doing it and losing the pressure at the end skidding out the board out of the water.
@BenBeholzVlogs
@BenBeholzVlogs 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback and thoughts on popping. I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but it seems to me that you describe it quite well. I believe that the faster you go and the more you enge with your board, the firmer the 'ground' of your board becomes. In other words, the pop is always related to your speed, edge engagement, and kite pressure.
@tmotten
@tmotten 4 ай бұрын
@@BenBeholzVlogs thanks for getting back Ben. I'm trying to draw a parallel to snowboarding where you used the springyness of the board to pop which you need to load up and bend it with your weight and speed and you kinda push down on that tail at the take off moment. But you're on solid ground. Doing so on water results (for me) in skidding out and losing the edge at the push down moment right at the end. So if that's right, then you have to carve only and not push off the tail of the board like on a snowboard (or skateboard ) and just finish the carve smoothly. Isn't that right?

I tend to keep loading too long after unhooking. Can do the raley but would be higher and more powered with shorter and stronger load i guess. Does the shorter more aggresive load comes naturally with practice? Or are there any tips for that for eg. go more downwind before unhooking to have more slack for the load?

Hello, I have question about unhooking. I tried to unhook for the first time and the kite pulled the whole force on my arms like crazy. I rly felt the massive pull on my arms, couldn’t handle it and I had to stop, drop the kite and hook in. My question is: is it normal that the pull is so strong and I just need to get used to handling it, or was it due to my gear? I am 80kg and have been riding 12m Duotone evo 2022 in around 15-16kt stable wind.
