Tutorial and Full Piano Cover of the hit TV Show Hill Street Blues Theme.
Easy to learn! You don't need to know piano theory!
Playing the piano can be much easier than you might think! You can find lots of videos where they talk about chords, notes, rhythm, and all kinds of technical jargon. At Music Made Easy, you'll learn to play songs that everyone will recognize, and you'll learn it in minutes.
It's fun to be able to sit down to a piano or keyboard and show off to your friends and family. Even if you can't play the whole song, playing the melodies that everyone remembers and can relate to will make you a piano player. Come along with me on a journey of learning to play the piano without having to know musical theory.
Equipment used:
Roland RD2000 Stage Piano

I've decided to try to play a piano for the umpteenth time! This time, though, it is different, probably because of Covid-19. Being retired, I already had a lot of time on my hands. Being on lockdown, gave me even more. I've pivoted about 4 or 5 times in the approach I took. The only approach I haven't embarked on is have a live teacher. So, here I am, at 74 years old with a Yamaha P e163 and I have decided that I would be truly committed this time and I have been. I'll just mention that the last major approach I took was reading notes. I'm fairly good at identifying the notes for each hand within one octave each. I could tell that would eventually work, but I don't have 10 years to apply to that approach. I happened to run across your video when I was looking up Hill Street Blues. I liked your approach and I decided that would be the route I would take. I must confess, it does take me a little longer than you indicate that it will. I had to write down the notes you play, especially when you hit 4 notes with the right hand. That's where I stopped for the day today, though I'm still very rough in playing the first part. I'm very motivated and in the next few days I'll be doing several 30 minute drills a day until I get it sounding good (to me!) I don't want to suggest any songs for you to do next because I think that you know which songs are repetitive and lend themselves to learning by a beginner like me. I've already subscribed to your site. I want to wait until I'm really proficient before tackling the next song. In the meantime, I will be looking out to see what you put out next. Thanks, Carlos in North Padre Island, TX

I am so happy to be able to be just a part of our learning and growing experience! Hill Street Blues was actually the very FIRST tutorial that I ever did on my channel. I would want to say that I think I have gotten better over the last year. With more than 50 video tutorials to choose from, I hope that you and I can be partners for quite some time. I would really like to get your comments on each and every video you watch and keep me updated on your progress. It's wonderful to meet new friends here! @@BenBennett10 I'm afraid that I've bitten off more than what I can chew! Please allow me to apologize in advance if the problem lies with my inexperience in understanding music. Here's a list of things I found after going over the video many times over trying to catch every nuance that I can glean from it. 1. You play two fingers of the left hand, most of the way when you play the song in its entirety, but that’s not covered on the instruction part. Is that intentional? 2. At 7:54 there is a progression that doesn’t seem to be covered anywhere in the instructions. 3. What you’re playing at 7:57 doesn’t seem to be covered anywhere in the video. 4.At 9:08 of the video your right hand thumb is striking the A#. I don’t see that step in the instructions either. Can you please help me understand my concerns? Carlos

Hi Carlos!! Glad to see you really getting into this and learning the song. So, the short answer for you is this : You didn't miss anything. When I did this tutorial, I was trying to teach the "basics" of the song, and so I did not teach the transition into, nor the guitar solo parts. That was by intention because it is a bit more complicated. Remember, this was the VERY FIRST tutorial of this channel - and I've learned ALOT since filming this over the past year. I talk about note names and chord names much more now, and that has helped me to go a bit deeper into songs. Given what you've pointed out - and how popular my Hill Street Blues tutorial is, I'm thinking that as we approach the anniversary of the channel, I should record an updated tutorial for this song and teach those other parts - don't ya think? I'm so sorry those are missing for you now - but I will get it in my video schedule to do an updated version of this song for and include those parts that I had left out. Deal? In the meantime, check out one of my other tutorials, and see what you like and start learning from there.... I'm about a month or so out in my shooting (I shoot and edit in advance), so it will be towards the end of April that I could do a re-boot of this tutorial. Thanks for pushing me in that direction!
@carlosh11934
@carlosh11934 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenBennett10 Oh my, I didn't mean to push you. I thought my problems were due to my ineptness! LOL Of course you have a deal, though I must admit, playing 4 notes with one hand and 1 or 2 with the other and then transitioning into the next part seems almost impossible to me right now. I was about to give up on that song, but based on what you said, I think that I will keep practicing what little I can so that I can be ready for the updated version. I'm a retired software engineer, so it's in my nature to strive for perfection. I have to go now. I've got some guests coming shortly. I get a lot of visitors here at the coast because we have a waterfront house and that makes us very popular when the weather starts warming up. See ya.

You're the greatest. I'm so glad I found this video, so glad I found you. Alas, seven years ago I had to leave my piano behind, and it's been that long since I've played. But I was just gifted with an 88-key yamaha, and as it so happens this baby boomer recently decided to re-watch the hill street blues series starting with Season 1 Episode 1. (Wow! those characters came right back! It felt like a family reunion.) As to my new piano, I'm relying on muscle memory to be able to play at least some of the songs I once knew. As for learning new songs, it was only natural to decide on Hill Street Blues to be the first. For some reason, however, I just wasn't getting that first set of chords right. So i googled into the universe and voila! Ha, ha, what I see now is that I was making it more complicated than it actually is. :D I love how you put everything together at the end. Dare I try to go beyond the intro? We'll see! But that will have to wait. Given events in my family, the other song top of the list to learn is Carly Simon's lovely Julie Through The Glass. I can read music and have a ton of songbooks. But I really prefer learning songs by ear. Ha, ha, back in the good old days, this meant playing that record over and over and over and taping weights to the arm (nickels) to slow it down! Well, I think the last song I learned on my old piano, may it rest in peace, was Walking in the Air, from The Snowman. So today I pick up where I left off, with a little help from my friends. :D Thanks again.

I will celebrate the anniversary of the channel with an "anniversary edition" of this song and teach all the parts. You can do it, Stephanie!! I know you can!!! @@BenBennett10 Thanks for the reply. So the first video I was drawn to here was the first in this series. I guess that means I'm supposed to start at the beginning and see what else might grab me! (I already noticed Rocket Man. I saw EJ in the 70's and have a soft spot for that song in particular.) To be sure I'll be back. By the way, when you wanted to be a policeman when you grew up, did you want to be like the ever steadfast Capt Furillo, Mr. Cool Taurean Blaque, scruffy undercover Belker, or one of the others? Like the punk robber said in Dirty Harry when Clint Eastwood couldn't remember if he'd fired five shots or six, "I gots to know. I gots to know." :D

You're welcome! Like I said, I ALWAYS reply! That is great that you started at the very first video - and now you can work your way through them all. I think I probably wanted to be more like Taurean Blaque.... just a cool cop with sunglasses... ya know? I love EJ also - and his music is so rich with piano! I'm looking forward to seeing your comments on EVERY ONE of the videos you watch on my channel. I hope it doesn't take you too long to watch them all!

@@BenBennett10 I'll be sure to check it out. // I just watched your drumming from yesterday. I forgot that you post on Sundays. I guess that's what the bell is for, but I'll pass. I like this idea of "human beings," ya know, those things that have to use their minds to learn things and make a point to remember them. Well, for as long as it lasts anyway. As David Bowie reminded us, "The earth is a bitch. We've finished our news. Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use..." Ha, ha, that came to mind because I've been watching David Bowie play that, a song on my list to learn. :D

Another great tutorial 👏! I remember the show was not a great sucess here in Germany but I loved it and i like the Theme 😀! Next one I try is the second tutorial of it 🙂. Mike Post composed many great TV themes (A-Team, Magnum P.I. for example), maybe you can do another one sometimes?

Hi, I really liked this, but someone has said you didn't cover the whole thing, you played it but didn't do a tutorial on the notes after the initial intro, the chords a bit bassier and almost jazz in style, but there wasn't a tutorial for that bit, I'd love to know how they are played then I can join it up with the bit I've learned!

Hey Animal Search! I get it... I understand your concern. Honestly, this was my VERY FIRST video that I produced for my KZbin Channel. I have learned alot since then. At some point, I will do an update where I include those other parts. The reason that I didn't in this one was because it seemed to "complicated" for something I was trying to make "easy". But I hear you! I appreciate your feedback and hope that you've looked at some of more recent videos to see how I am doing them now.... Did you subscribe?

Derek!! I am SO happy to have you here with me at Music Made Easy!!! First, thank you for subscribing and being a part of our community. I LOVE comments and hope you'll feel comfortable commenting on all the videos you watch. I really like to interact with our community!!! I am so happy that you decided to buy a keyboard and learn to play some songs - and start with Hill Street Blues. First, let me say that the video that you chose was actually the VERY FIRST tutorial I did when I started this channel over a year ago. I hope that I've improved alot!!! That said, I have 2 things to suggest: 1) there is a control in the lower right hand corner that will let you slow the playback of the video down. Do that and see if that helps you follow along with me. 2) I have done an "anniversary edition" of this song just a couple months ago that you might also find helpful. I link to it at the end of the video you have been watching. Another suggestion that you could try is to take a piece of paper and write down the chords/notes that I'm playing. I don't always think that is a good thing to do, but in your case, it might help. What do you think? Do these ideas give you something to go off of? Let's keep this conversation going!!!! I'm always here for you!!

I love what you are sharing, but could you just mention the notes and chord shapes for the rest of us, just in passing?.... because some of us are piano students, and it would make it easier for us to learn the names of things like a minor, second inversion to a diminished 7th. Or, if you think it would be too distracting, maybe Chyron the symbols at the bottom of the screen? BTW, when I worked as a jock in Top 40 (1981) we had this cut in the rotation as a current hit. This was when Steven Bochco was at the top of his game, and Mike Post was a name we all knew. Mike is now 76, and he has composed most of the truly ear-sticky TV music we all love. What voice setting are you using on the Roland?

Hi Art!! Hey, nice to meet you (virtually, that is!). Thank you for the long, thought out comment that you left. You are spot on with what you are asking. The Hill Street Blues tutorial was my VERY first tutorial that I did last May. The channel has come a LONG WAYS since then! I DO try now to talk about notes, and chords. In fact, I have two tutorials ready for January where I am really exploring chords and inversions with the community. I try to name the notes or the chords now in my tutorials that I make. I hope that you subscribed, and that you'll take some time and watch more from the channel!! I'd love your feedback.!!! Yes, Mike has written the BEST TV Themes and many people don't know he's behind them. He's a piano genius! Voice Settings; well I change them up on almost every tutorial that I do. I use the regular Stage Grand quite a bit, but I love to mix in other sounds as well.... it can do almost anything!! Hope to hear from you again soon on another video!!!

@@BenBennett10 Thanks! I will make a point of subscribing. I'm considering a Roland, maybe the FP-30....although the P125 is also highly rated. Right now, I have spent the past year or so on a 20 year old PSR-270, and it's time I played something with a better action, so I am not lost when I sit down at a real acoustic piano. Your Roland looks like it is a couple G's, and I want to get through both the Albert and the Schaum books before I wade in that deeply. I will look forward to those new videos!

Hey Art! Thanks for subscribing! I really appreciate that! As you look for a new keyboard or piano, I have a video where I talk about key features to look for. I'll link it here for you! I think you'll really like just browsing the content I have. I try to give tips and tricks and let you get to know me better. Yes, the RD-2000 is about $2,500, but SO wonderful for live gigs as well as just playing. But, absolutely one can get a less expensive version.
