I was simply saying that other game devs that have released multiple steam games have a clear plan from the beginning/prototype of the gameplay, while benbonk didn't have a clear plan from the beginning or real prototype. It seems like benbonk is in development hell a little with bugs and stuff to improve

can i just say that i really appreciate how you didn't take this channel's success as a sign to rush this game out so you can pocket all the money. You work hard and show immense determination, always improving on your designs, trying to release the best possible game you can. It's hard to be a game dev without genuine passion but also it is just hard to be a game dev and most people get really tired and sick of their games after working on it for years so releasing it early is an escape to them but not you, you've been going strong for years. I feel like quite a lot of people wouldn't do this and instead would maybe try to go into early access aka an excuse to not fully develop a game that might fail. While i get how early access can help teams get the budget they need to finish development, there are too many games that get abandoned while in early access because it did too poorly financially despite it being an unfinished game. Props to all those studios that stick to their initially bad early access games and make it better over time like No Man's Sky. But yeah, thanks dude, you're a real inspiration, devlog series like this are extremely rare, entertaining ones that go on consistently for years always making incredible progress and without restarting their game 4 times.

The one thing I feel slimekeep needs is more vfx. Add more screen shake to actions like taking damage, shooting your gun, buying items, etc. Add things like trails whenever you're moving fast, and add glows or visual filters whenever you're buffed, or your slime is buffed, etc. Also since all slimes have the bright outline, change the Pet Slime's appearancs somehow to make it stand out.

I've been watching your devlogs for a few years now, very excited how the game is coming together! Although I probably won't be able to get the game once it's out, I am still very excited to see it growing closer to releasing! For this devlog, I would say the Metronome upgrade is the only real outlier for me. It seems like a good idea, but having no cap allows bosses to be easily cheesed. Possibly the upgrade can have a cap of 4 damage or something? I don't know, it seems a bit too stacked against enemies with larger healthbars. I get that the intent was to have it work on smaller enemies, so maybe it doesn't work on bosses or something. That's my only complaint, aside from that, don't let the scope creep get you, and keep on it!

I noticed at 0:54 that the little text that types itself wraps weirdly when typing, this is because (i assume) it's typing each letter of the dialogue in real time A better approach would be to have all the dialogue already be typed out in the text object but increment the "MaxVisibleCharacters" value (assuming you're using text mesh pro) Doing this will get rid of that weird snapping so the text feels a bit nicer to read and comes with the benefit of being able to add stuff like rich text tags (you'll have to have it detect its about to increment MaxVisibleCharacters and add however many characters are inbetween both < and >)

I think the biggest reason the game doesn't feel alive is the animations. There aren't many animated sprites frame by frame and mostly they are only moving with the same one image.

55 devlogs and you're still going... wow 👏👏 It's crazy to see how much the game has grown since day 1, and I can't wait to see how far it ends up going. For the past 5 years you've still managed to make me excited for the next devlog. Keep at it benbonk 🙃 also a feature I would love to see implemented into the game: i think adding achievements as part of the game would make it even more satisfying and fun to play, and would really boost the game's replayability and its versatility. this could also be inserted into some npcs' quests: they ask for a certain number of achievements or some specific achievements, or you just get achievements from completing their quests/interacting with them. and also i think it would be cool if you could get skins for the slime pet (and player) from like achievements or shops and naming the pet would be cool too alright time to stop rambling >:]

Personally, i do not believe these features are needed, and heres why: 1. The game is a roguelike and as such it is not the type of game to contain quests (The way you describe achievements seems like a quest with NPCs and all). 2. BenBonk is nearing the end of development, so adding something like this would push the game's release even further. 3. It's just not needed. In the current state of the game there is already a cosmic ammount of features and gameplay that some sort of achievement system is not needed. 4. There are already achievements in the basement area 😑

Sometimes it helps to have some outsider perspective. Ignore what does not resonate. In each screen, notice how much of it is covered in only one single, flat colour. I think we're used to it because we are so familiar with the game by now, but making the edges of your rooms living foliage with drifting motes, or oceans, or dungeon walls might help here. Contrasting more busy "backgrounds" with a flatter (I would keep your implemented texture variation) floor would add a lot. That being said it does add a quite a bit of scope, because it will entail thinking what makes sense within the game and how to make a map make sense (transitioning from a forest scene to an island one might be too stark a transition for example) and testing.

Great video! The more than doubling of slime upgrades is crazy, and probably adds tons of variety. I just have a couple suggestions for some of the upgrades. Armed Ally seems to be one of the most broken upgrades in the game, which I believe it needs to be nerfed quite a bit in order for it to not be the go-to option every game it shows up. (I'm not a playtester.) The gun the slime has should likely have the same fire rate as normal and need to be reloaded, just like if a player was holding it. I feel like Undercover Ambush should have some sort of sound effect to kind of signal it's happening, maybe a sort of loud noise (like an explosion) when it hits and a game wide decrease in sound right before. I feel like this would kind of further push the feel of a surprise attack. Metronome could make the pet hitting sound have extra pitch for each consecutive hit, sort of similar to how games with combos go about this to sort of add an audio cue. The Line could make a static hit sound when hitting an enemy. It feels a little backwards in the game for most of the reward for capturing slimes is to become more effective at killing slimes. With the normal upgrades (and surge mode I believe), the player becomes more effective at killing slimes by getting upgrades by killing slimes. Is the slime capturing system supposed to be viable early game before getting powerful and eventually switching straight to killing slimes, or does the ideal gameplay consist of doing both? Maybe I'm thinking to far into this, but it does seem a bit weird.

If you wanna nerf the slime pet picking up weapons, you could make it so the gun occasionally jams (because the pet slime doesn’t know how guns work he’s just a slime) and the player would have to interact with the pet slime to un-jam the gun

i have an idea , i think that after maxing all the trees the player can chose to reset all the upgrades but keep one tree of upgrades and this stacks so at the end he can earn more upgrades the more he upgrades the slime , its like a rebirth system but u get to keep one skill tree and it stacks so if i reset the brute skill tree i can rebuy the brute skill tree and now the upgrades stack , hope you like the idea

I do worry that the amount of upgrades and questlines is going to cause a horrible feeling when you die and lose a run. I haven't played the game but it seems like the meta progression slipped in to the the in-run progression and now theres so much to manage for you to just instantly be reset by one misplay. Just my thoughts.
