I 100% agree with your thoughts on benching and punching power. I think the effectiveness of the bench press is along the same line as why push ups are such a huge part of most general strength training protocols for fighters. Often times people want to take general exercises and justify them by saying it has direct specific carryover. I think all the general benefits of resistance training is sufficient reason to bench or do standing overhead press or push press or split jerks.

I like Rayes speed bags. Durable bladders are always an issue. I have a master's degree in philosophy. "Modes" may reference Baruch Spinoza. The "scientific method of philosophy" is most useful. I.e., the two paradigms, metaphysics and epistemology. Wittgenstein has much to say about sensory input and functions of the mind. Oxford has some open courses as a public outreach. Very difficult to discuss Philosophy with people these days as grifters and talking heads have intercepted and derailed intellectual curiosity. Many people use terms like "critical thinking, logic, rational, sensible", etc. to make a position sound strong but without an understanding of what these terms represent. Often without realizing that the meta use of these terms so often debases one's position. Thank you coach Ramsey! Blessings to you and your family.

I’ll have to disagree about the bench press. The bench press allows for the greatest loading of weight on the upper extremities in a COMPRESSIVE manner. This increases bone density and enables the upper extremities to withstand more impact. Yes, deadlifts allow more loading of the upper extremities but that’s tension rather than compression and the bone remodeling is different.

Hey Ramsey, Question: how to motivate someone who doesn't want to be motivated? I'm asking because my wife's grandmother (nearly 93) has pretty much given up on life 15 or so years ago. As a result she hardly walks anymore, let alone practice any kind of exercise. Now she's pretty much bound to her couch, and is very much unhappy because she feels she is unable to go anywhere, and she is in pain all the time. Besides being 93, she is perfectly healthy and with some exercise she would be able to move and go places without being in constant pain. I',m a big believer in the idea that it's never too late to improve your wellbeing, and we live in the Netherlands, a country with a socialised healthcare system meaning she would be able to get a physicial therapist to help her, paid by the government. It kills me to see her suffer and her ostensibly choosing to continue suffering, and not take any action to improve her state. What can I do to motivate her?

One thing to note with Sanda it's basically the default competitive format for Kung Fu practitioners even in the modern day. It can be a little tricky to classify because of that. At a professional level it's very much its own thing, but outside of China most people who compete in that format are competing in Kung Fu competitions, at least that's my experience with it.

In regards to the question involving anaerobic conditioning, if the goal is to improve intensity, then weightlifting and sprinting are great options. If the goal is to carry over that intensity for the entire fight without losing too much power, then the focus should actually be on aerobic conditioning. An improved aerobic metabolism will allow you to buffer the lactic acid better during the rest in between rounds, allowing you to come out with more intensity.
@chonzen1764
@chonzen1764 Жыл бұрын
This. People don't realize that all metabolism is really aerobic. Anaerobic metabolism is really just the use of stored aerobic energy. You anaerobic reserves are created aerobically. As such anaerobic metabolism is just stored aerobic metabolism. This makes more sense when you study oxygen deficit in athletes.

You should do a deep dive on your wife's 50 modes of thinking on your philosophy channel. In recent years I have evolved into a bit of a philosopher and find philosophy to be about the most fascinating topic of discussion there is. I would quite enjoy such a video. Some more discussion on the connection between sight and empiricism would be cool, too. Strictly speaking, any experience would count as empirical, but the idea that in practice this reduces to sight alone is one I hadn't considered. Could be interesting to consider to what degree this is a necessary result of human biology v.s. a result of human cultural prioritization of sight, etc. And insofar as the above is related to the question of God, it's worth noting that, in practice, most people do not accept "empirical truths" as a result of their own empirical experience but on the testimony of a "qualified" experimenter, and high school science classes fall woefully short of performing sufficient experimentation to justify a student's wholesale acceptance of scientific theories on anything other than the instructor's word. This does not mean that one should not accept such theories, of course, but that one should reevaluate/become aware of the role of trust in a third party's testimony in his own learning. No human has the time or resources to independently justify more than a tiny fraction of the sum total of human knowledge on empirical grounds.

I remember reading a study which provided evidence that Bench press strength correlated with higher punchin powers however i don't specifically remember the study design. I still think an exercise of horizontal push can be beneficial for shoulder health more than anything, given the stress to which those parts of the body need to sustain. Overall strength and explosiveness in the hips and the core are way more important. Thanks for your thoughts Coach !
@grapejuice2589
@grapejuice2589 Жыл бұрын
That study is retarded. It doesn't make sense mechanically. Certain weight training can absolutely help to limited degree. But the amount a bench press could help punching power has to be so insignificant that you'd be way better using your time doing something else.

Hello Ramsey it’s me yousef from Kuwait. I started judo and wrestling last year on November, my training is basically with dummy not with person (so yeah no randori). My judo instructor is a black belt his training is judo without a gi and wrestling. Within these 5 month I have learned 28 takedowns and four ground submission techniques. Even though he doesn’t not like the belt system I got curious so I asked my coach coach even though I don’t wear a belt which level am I… if a white belt is level 1 and black belt is level 7 which level I am right now with my five months progress. He replied shockingly “4… between green and blue” So I asked him really than why some people takes them about a year to be green belt he replied this “this is world wide marketing strategies from martial arts schools to waste young martial artist time”. You are a very reliable source and I always like your advice so what is your take on this. And is it possible to be a brown belt less than a year?

So for the last year I've been training golden gloves and a bit of muay thai, bjj and judo. I feel old but in great shape for my age. So would the short answer to the Sanda question be something like "Sanda is a kickboxing ruleset that has roots in many kungfu styles"?
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey Жыл бұрын
It’s a rule set that was originally intended to allow practitioners of different styles to compete against each other in a neutral arena- the same way the UFC was originally intended to do the same thing. Any stylistic elements we see in the sports today are results of fighters adapting to the rule set, not because they are importing traditions from specific styles.

Question. I studied martial arts a little as a child. I'm returning to it now (via capoeira) as I understand that my body needs a variety of movement and stimulus to maintain functionality into old age. I have fought for real and have no interest in doing so again. Now the question. Given that very very few people who can afford to study at a fashionable gymn will ever be in a real fight (where another is trying to efficiently kill you) and have never been in one and are absolute beginners ( I'm a beginner and I've been studying on and off sonce I was six, I'm fifty one) do you think that, since the one fight we will all be in is to the death and with death and that we will all lose..... it might useful to stop promoting the idea that fighting is the point of training ? Isn't it sad that we can so effectively promote an unfunny, uneducated, unskilled fat man to advise us on matters upon which he has no more grasp than an arrogant child ? It is disgusting to hear his views come out of the mouths of so many drones programmed for stupidity and incapable of even pretending to follow an argument so hypnotised are they by arguments from authority...... It's been nice to hear your more thoughtful side of the story yet, every time we dignify a stupid question with a response we validate it, sometimes we must laught in childrens faces. Do it warmly and with love and they will laught back.

For example Muslims also believe in Jesus, in a different way, but they do. I am not the guy who is able to recite the Bible word by word. But I know the main message. Its not about what you say or how often you pray, it about how you live your life and mostly how you treat your family and fellow men. People should focus more an that.

You mentioned Tai Chi in some of your previous videos, that's the one I'm the most curious about, as I've never seen anybody teaching it including sparring in their training,. Coach Ramsey, what martial arts should I pursue? I wrestled for 4 years in High School, but haven’t competed for about 20 years. There’s a martial arts school near me that teaches Kajukenbo, Behring Jui-Jitsu, Last Stand Kickboxing, and Judo. My main interest is something that can supplement my wrestling, as I coach children in wrestling. My secondary interest is learning skills that could work in self defense. Sorry if it’s a bad question. I hope I’m not falling into a power fantasy since I am not nearly the bad mamma jamma that Liam Neeson is. Thank you for your time.

i disagree that benchpress does nothing for a punch, some good points where made about body rotation and hikite! but to have arm chest, core and lat as well as leg strength is going to accommodate the power when it lands on the target and continues to punch through them as intended. the way i was instructed is that my punch is at 90% complete when it lands on the target palm facing up, in the remaining 10-15% the fist rotates in through the target, target being solar plexus or floating ribs usually
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey Жыл бұрын
Why do you believe the way you were instructed is optimal?
@daniel-san836
@daniel-san836 Жыл бұрын
@@RamseyDewey Well i wasn't instructed to bench press.. i've just put two and two together on that one, the strength i'm able to hit the heavy bag with and continue to impact through has increased with the upper body work i've been doing. that being said, it's obvious that too much upper body muscle isn't of benefit at all to a martial artist, but at least benching in the range of 3x10 at 70kg this is also because fights aren't usually predictable, you may have to grab someone and control them, joint locks might not be an option, they might be bigger than you.. these are all reasons i train hard on all my body with strength training. Now as for the question of why I consider the way of the fist as optimal? well firstly, these humble masters weren't out to prove how deadly their fist was in cage fights for stupid amounts of money, for them the art was about honor and integrity and the lethality they practiced for was for life or death. Now granted, traditional martial arts has a lot to answer for, but it won't because it doesn't have to, that's up to us to evolve it with respect, you can't ignore there are some badass motherfkers who did it right, then MMA comes along calls BS on all of it because it's too unrealistic and systematized etc, nonono, it's not that simple.. these systems and concepts have far more merit than we've allowed ourselves in this modern dialog to give credit for. Steve Thompson is evolving the art respectfully, Jesse Enkamp too. It's silly just to throw the baby out with the bath water

@@RamseyDewey because I've seen enough of your videos amd sat through enough of your 'long truthful pauses' to fairly accurately assume what's underpinning the question you asked me re what traditional martial arts considers optimal. Do you not rotate your loose fist 180' and clench into a tight fist toward the end of a full extended punch? If not, Why do you not consider this optimal? Have you heard the analogy of a traditional martial artist if trained diligently and properly can punch a hole through a door whereas a boxers punch will knock the whole door off its hinges. Difference being focus, kime, hikite and more than probably the nature of the spinning wrist

Ramsey, Hello from WA state, what do you think an experienced martial artist, who has trained in Various styles, of Gung Fu Chinese hands, Karate, Judo, Hapkido, Tae kwan do, who has been in several fights and self defence situations on and off the mats and in and out of the Dojo who also teaches resistance training, and or switching techniques when need be or softening and opponent going into a technique, should teach students for self-defense to keep it as real as possible? And benefit the student the most?

@@RamseyDewey yoo0000 . Grigore The palm strike is good for close distances. When striking with your hand, you want to have your arm length at it's maximum. A pound strike can be effective in the clinch The problem with it is that your fingers may get caught in clothing getting hyperextended which can be very painful. Or hyperextending error wrist which can be even worse. Practicing the palm strike on a bag can even injury your joints. A closed fist punch gives you better extension but you could get hurt as well by breaking your knuckles on a skull. That's the only thing of the palm strike is good for , You Cannot break your knuckles but you can hyperextend your fingers and wrist. Fighting can get you injured no matter what. Pound strikes are good to use. If you're looking to get into a clinch You can strike and grab clothing at the same time.

@@grigoreureche345 The best way would be to ball your fingers up leaving your palm open . Using your hook, you need to keep your arm stiff. Uppercuts come from a straight forward punching style. Actually Steven seagal does these moves. I would still recommend them only during close clinch strikes.

bench press is good for boxing. Why do boxers do many pushups when it is a body weight easy version of a benchpress? The tricep is used when punching straight and fully extending the arm which is the primary mover in the benchpress which people have a misconception of it being a chest focused exercise. To give a better mental picture, picture someone who can bench 3 plates as opposed to one, each of the participants never did a day of squatting. I think everyone knows who can hit harder right off the bat.

No, empirical evidence isn't limited to a sense or even related to a sense. Can blind people not do science? Sight is just a medium. Whether we do the math on paper or talking to a computer and having it spit out the results what we're doing is juggling concepts and ideas on our head. Maybe we use a visual medium to represent it, and in most cases we use visualizations in our heads, but that is not a requirement. Many times I analyze problems and reach solutions using my internal monologue; visualizations isn't even the only thinking medium.

Also, the "spirit" isn't something confirmed to exist, so I would say it does _not_ stand to reason that the "spirit" has senses. If there was such a thing it could be that it does not have senses and relies upon it's host's senses. Maybe if you could inhabit your spiritual form the experience would be that all is connected as one thing, and the sense would be everything. Or maybe "spirit" is just a concept invented by humanity to bring some semblance of understanding to the unknown that's in our heads.

Every throw, trip, sweep, and takedown where the fighter executing the takedown remains on his feet while his opponent goes down is legal in a sanda fight. In fact, it’s faster, more powerful, and more effective not to. Use the same footwork and motion of the hips as an O-goshi, rather than trying to do a drop seoi nage with the leg.
