I bought a lucha right when they came out and really enjoyed it even though its heavy and a bit more difficult to flip but one day Flytanium scales showed up and the latch went away , since morphing into an amazing flipper. With the flyti scales this flips on par with my replicant with under $300 invested. Its also available everywhere and so are the flyti scales which makes it a total sleeper right now. Just got one and love it. Strangely that thin, straight, razor sharp blade is excellent in the kitchen. Fun to casually flip, and listen to that Ti ‘ring’. Just wish they’d done a clip!

As someone who owns 40 balisongs, I’m embarrassed to say I don’t have a single Benchmade one. I have a couple BM folders, but I’m mostly a cheap bastard when it comes to knives. LOL!

I’m a Bali snob for sure, but you do get what you pay for when it comes to a butterfly knife. Flipping becomes a more enjoyable experience when you buy quality. A Benchmade 51 is like the entry model to a real flipper. The rest of them cheap fleamarket knives don’t hold up.

Benchmade's value has dipped considerably since the ones I was regularly buying in the early 80's from the Bali-song company in Burbank, even considering the inflation which has ensued. ... and those early bali's were hand ground by Jodi Samson and handles sporting exotic wood and horn inserts. 😎

I actually don’t think it’s illegal to own them in the UK. I think they’re just illegal to sell, carry and import. So if you have any that were purchased before the year they were banned (I think 1988), consider yourself lucky.

If you're looking for a good balanced flipper the 87 is the wrong direction to move in. I had one for about 8 or so months and it took a back seat every single day to my Ab, Rep, Tach2, or kuski bm 63. The only reason I held on so long is that its a lovely work knife very strong and lasting materials/construction plus its a fun tool to toss around. That being said it was very very blade bias and did not fan well due to that heavy blade which is why my otjer balis were fliped 100x more no doubt. I recently traded it as its use was in decline and I wanted something more practical as this boi is on bearings it's harder to maintain. The price is steep no doubt but it is a looker it'll catch anyones eye as fast as I can glide the blade through whatever I'm cutting, but as a flipper there are far better, cheaper, and easier to maintain balisongs.

The 87 is good, but it actually had the opposite effect on me. I had pretty high expectations for it and it was pretty underwhelming. It's really not a good flipper, and though I didn't keep mine long enough, I've seen people have lots of issues with the bearing system on them and having the handles wear substantially where the bearings are. So it would be good as and EDC Bali, but not so much for tons of flipping. My Hom Chimera is light years ahead of it and $100 cheaper.

Year late but that's definitely the baliplus clone. It's subtle but you can tell from the tang pins and blast finish on handles that it's not Benchmade.

I get it I use it I put it in a drawer and forget about it, I use 300 other knives then rediscover it use it again but put it back in the drawer since I didnt use it enough for a video yet it sits for a few more months I use it again do a video then return it...people say take your time and that guy never ever asked how it was going I contacted him over a year later and he forgot he even sent it, lol...Ive had the opposite where someone sent a knife to try then sent me 3 messages daily asking when I would make a video...I appreciate the generosity but I have so many projects and testing going on daily Im never sure what I may make a video on next...I have to take notes of how knives perform so I dont forget when I revisit them later..,.
