I've been a carpenter for almost 40 years. Always use the right tool for the right job if it breaks or bends it means you're not using it properly. If people use a Spyderco as a pry bar knowing in advance that it has a thin tip obviously it's going to break. Every tool is designed for a certain job use it properly and it will not fail you. In 40 years the only tools that ever got broken are the ones that I loaned to my friends who don't know how to use tools properly.

Gonna disagree with you. Tools and/or metal will flex, bend and break all the time. Most of the time it's metal fatigue or just poorly made metal that contained flaws. The ultimate issue is that you market a item to be tough or as well as all you need whether as a EDC or in a survival situation then the product should be able to handle abuse.

And yeah 940 is top dog. Designed by a real rancher. Enough said. That reverse tanto with that reinforced tip is the best looking blade ever imo & it can take a beating most blades can’t take. Can’t tell you how much heavy prying I’ve done with my 940 & never broke. I tried carrying a pm2 & broke the tip in like the first 2 weeks of carrying it lol got my 940 and that’s all I need. ANNNNND YOU'RE A PASTOR!!! NICE! I thought that Hebrews verse was a cool one there on your 940. I went through a period where I was a skeptic when I was younger, but there is something radically cool that happens to your life when you accept Jesus and don't look back. LOL..like reckless abandon for God. Like you don't just know about God, or read about stories of people who knew Him, you experience Him in your own life. That's a beautiful thing. I can't speak for others, but God radically came into my life at a whole other level when I started helping start a church and going to small groups. When I first met my pastor I heard him tell me "If you wanna see God work in your life...serve". I did NOT want to hear that. I thought he was just trying to talk me into helping out because he needed people...and that COULD have been part of it.....but he wasn't kidding. The atmosphere and grace on my life is thick and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I won't lie, people aren't always the easiest to deal with, but I desire the power of God and blessing on my life so much that I walk through it and try to serve as faithfully as I can and it's always worth it. Jesus is the best thing that's ever happened to me.

I have both and love them both but see them as quite different. Even though both are buttery smooth the 940 edges out the PM2 in how fast it deploys and closes with ease. My 940 has become my Sunday knife...it’s form is more suitable for pocket carry in my church pants it’s more eloquent...to me more of a gentlemen’s knife. However the PM2 is my everyday carry the other 6 days due to the confidence I have with it in hand for larger tasks as well as small tasks. Both are amazing!

I never 'warmed' to the PM2. It's a truly excellent product (and I do have other Spyderco's) but I found that the hype didn't live up to it. In fact I gave mine to my son and don't miss it at all. I bought the Shaman as a replacement for my PM2 (before the prices went up) and although it's another great folder, it's way too heavy for EDC use. The standard 940 ticks all the boxes for me and I'm thinking of trading my Shaman for a second 940 if I can get a good deal...

I own both…I own many Spydercos and Benchmades. Here are the main differences that make an *actual* impact on your experience. First of all, the Spydercos are superior cutting tools, period. Their blade shapes and edge geometries are just better. They also come in much better steels…if you like a model, chances are you can find it in Cruwear, m4 or S110v. Lastly, Spydercos have very “blade focused” ergonomics…the blade itself sort of becomes part of your hand while you use it. Benchmades feel slightly more luxury. They’re very smooth and satisfying to operate but they still feel sturdy and capable. If you like to choke back, a Benchmade is probably what you’re looking for…their ergonomic is more “I’m holding this knife” than “this knife is an extension of my hand”. Lastly, Benchmade makes the most of its size. The 940, mini grip, etc. are all incredibly efficient. They make the most of their scales by fitting a ton of blade length into a small package.

@@EDCandLace For sure…I feel like benchmade’s s30v is a bit easier to get *ultra* sharp on a bench stone. But other than that, the cruwear and m4 on my shamans, etc. is undoubtedly better than my adamas or 560. I think spyderco just has more experience with tool steels since they use them so much more often. I also like that they don’t automatically coat every tool steel.

Picked up a 940-2 a few days ago to replace a PM2 as an EDC. While I liked the PM2, it is too bulky due to the handle shape and length, as well as the Spyderco hole in the blade. The 940-2 is a lot slimmer and lighter, and it has pretty much the same blade length with a much stronger tip that's still sharp enough to pierce or drill a hole.

If I could only have one, it would be the 940. But just maybe I can do both. Great point at the end. You don’t know what others are dealing with. Keep an open mind. You would be shocked at what some people can hide or deal with. At the same time you can be shocked with what people do for no reason. I just try to be the best person I can. I have a p3 in s35vn, s110v, and maxamet is my newest for example. While I do keep my 940 in my collection, it’s not one that i carry all the time. Also you could go ahead and get a pm2 and a leatherman for your paint can prying needs (which I literally do because you can’t beat a leatherman for really hard stuff) and you’ll still have some money left over. @@colonelaengus7005 Until to the '70s, you could carry a knife with a blade up to 4 cm. Then, due to the communist terrorism, all blades lengths are banned. You are not allowed even a Victorinox classic. Exceptions are if you can prove a specific need, As trekking, camping, picnicking. Yet, it did happen that a police officer caught a person, in the wild, with a knife and asked him: what is the knife for? Answer: I made myself a sandwich; show me the sandwich! I cannot it's inside my stomach. So the officer went on saying if you cannot prove you made a sandwich I, must sanction you. Unbelievable but true.

The ergonomics on the PM2 are far superior, especially in wet conditions and with gloves on. The tall full flat grind allows the PM2 to be thinner behind the edge, and if used in a self defense role, the wider blade creates a larger wound for the same depth.

@Phaminator525 3 жыл бұрын
True, the pm2 is a much better cutter but for self defense I would use the 940 just because of how robust it is. Also the Benchmade is faster to deploy in a self defense situation

For a folding knife, i prefer spyderco. I hate how they look. It looks like something an edgelord would have hung on a chain in highschool. However i love the grip, i love how damnably sharp it gets, and i love the flat grind for utility purposes. For more hardcore tasks like wood carving, batoning, and other bushcraft tasks, i prefer a fixed blade with a scandi grind. So i just don't feel the need to buy a benchmade, despite how much better they look.

I can't speak for Spyderco but Julie Morris at Benchmade is, to me, the jewel in their 'warranty crown'. My 940 failed twice because of failed omega springs. Julie kept me updated at every stage of the warranty repair via e-mail on both occasions and my 940 now has (what seems to me) stronger, uprated Omega springs and it's been completely reliable ever since. This is all the more valid as I live in the United Kingdom. Well done Benchmade and 'thankyou' Julie Morris.

I was instructed to send my 940 to them at Benchmade Knife Co., 300 Beavercreek Road, Oregon City. OR 97045. About a week later she sent me an email to let me know she'd received the knife and then updated me (via email) at every stage of the repair. The whole process took about six weeks from posting to receiving. With the exception of my outgoing postage the whole thing didn't cost a penny. If you need any more info, just contact me again here. I was at the store yesterday and I checked so many 940 variants. They were beautiful. Then I asked for a PM2 and a Para3. The Para3 felt small for me, just like the 940. The store showed me a Griptilian with hole. I like the hole. It became comparable with the PM2. After scrutinizing both, I was torn, but I ended up choosing the PM2. I just like the way it feels. My EDC knife is a Kershaw Funxion EMT, and the blade (saber) is similar to the Griptilian. That’s another reason I chose the PM2 so that I can have a flat blade. @@wyattbreymeyer4033 I have 3 benchmade 940s, two are serrated black, one is the 9400 auto. Bought to sell one. I bought a Maxamet para 3, then days later i was gifted a s30v Para 3. The second big knife i bought money wise was a Paramilitary 2 brown s35vn sprint run knife. Sold it days later. Ended up trading the Maxamet version to get it back months later. Which was a week ago. Love carrying it now. Only with DP clip though. Felt sentimental towards it. So those two spydercos are all i have. I have a Gerber 06 auto and a Toor Carbon Phoenix. I've had a lot of Benchmades. I would get them and resell them. I had a Super Freek. Wanted to carry it but, just didn't like it for some reason. As i mentioned above, im going to sell a 940 because for a long time, ive wanted a Bailout gry-1 m4 steel. I know i will carry and love that knife. The 940 im selling, i put custom micarta scales on it. After that, i carried it for a little bit, then really started missing the original aluminum scales. I would see all these other 940s with the beautiful wear on them and just wanted the aluminum scales back. I use my knives, the ones i carry that is. I keep them well maintained but, I'm not afraid to hack wood if i have to with them. I also have various tools from Winkler, Toor Knives, and Gerber. I love Gerbers american made products. I want to build a fastball on their custom shop. I know Gerber gets a bad wrap but, even though the quality on my 06 auto is shit, I love it for what it is. It just works. I also have the Principle and Strongarm. The Strongarm is a Beast. If they ever come out with a strong steel for it, i will get it. I am currently falling in love with Buck knives too. Looking to purchase a 110 in s35vn. I love Benchmades, and i have had more of them than any other but, i also like other companies as well. I hated Spydercos until i got my Para3. I have both PM2 and the 940 Osborne. Also have other Spyderco models as well as Benchmades. Own a Chris Reeve 21 Sebenza too. Take this for what it's worth... go ahead and spend your coin on these higher end EDC's with their "super-steel" blade materials that I find myself touching up just as much as a 420c blade that takes an edge and cuts like a scalpel. What my point is...I petty much have carried and owned the whole bunch, and the knife that rides with me just about every day is my little old Kershaw Leek. As long as I'm not planning on getting stranded in the wilderness or using my blade as a friggin' pry-bar, I'll carry my little slicer. If ya don't have one...get one, a fraction of the cost. The tip is an apple to oranges comparison. The tips are designed for different uses. The Benchmade is thicker and reinforced so would be stronger. The Spyderco will penetrate so much easier, it's almost like a needle so of course will be more fragile. That said I agree with @James-ke5sx.... neither of these tools are pry bars or drills. My edc MUST be useable for self defense, and stabbing is way more effective than cutting in that application. Thanks for the comparison: for a self defense application I believe the Spyderco will win out as the bigger handle with contour and g-10 will stay in hand much better than the straight aluminum handle on the Benchmade!
