Worked for me in the Corps. It's actually designed to stop extension when blocked you creep.
@thepenultimateninja5797 Жыл бұрын
You completely missed the point. The reason it says it's "for military and law enforcement only" is because of the Federal Switchblade Act of 1958. It's a federal law that prohibits shipping switchblades over state lines, except to law enforcement and the military. It's not really enforced, and it's kind of ignored nowadays, but some online sellers will still make you check a box stating that you are military or law enforcement before they will let you complete your order.

It is used by the military, and I can confirm it is used by law enforcement. Because I use one, and am in law enforcement. You should probably stay in your lane.

You realize it stops early as a feature, right? It does that so it doesn't go through your hand if you accidentally deploy it incorrectly. This review is coming form someone who has no idea what theyre talking about.
@randallscott-key8023 жыл бұрын
No I don't realize that at all. I realize that DA OTF knives use a spring to place the blade under tension just before releasing an internal lock that allows the blade to fly forward under it's own inertia. It is not "safe by design" but by engineering requirements. The genius of DA designs is they work in mirror opposition. The same spring that slings the blade out is used to sling the blade back in! As long as nothing happens to interrupt the blade's deployment the design works eggcellently, but it only takes the resistance of a piece of paper to stop the blade. DA OTF knives don't have any internal "rails" for the blade to come off, simply rear locks and front locks for the blade to lock up when it arrives using the mass-inertia of it's launch.

@karlschmid90538 жыл бұрын
Why would you obstruct an OTF, open it, and then act as though its safety feature is a problem? The blade is supposed to slip off its tracks if it hits something while it's opening. This is to prevent it from opening in your pocket and stabbing the hell out of you.
@randallscott-key8023 жыл бұрын
That is not exactly accurate. A double-action OTF works by "slinging" the blade forward to open, and backward to close. The spring is connected to a bar that bears against the blade base. this bar is actuated by the firing button. The blade is under ZERO tension when retracted, and when extended. There is a small lock inside that holds the blade in place when retracted, and it's mirror twin holds the blade open when extended. Pushing the button moves the internal bar that stretches the internal coil spring and places the base of the blade under tension. As the bar moves forward it eventually depresses the blade lock and the now-tensioned blade is release to launch forward under spring pressure, though it requires blade inertia to carry the blade all the way to the front lock. Basically once the blade is launched it's in free-flight until it goes full forward and the front lock clicks in. Not being able to penetrate a flimsy piece of paper isn't a safety feature, it's an engineering side-effect. There isn't any spring force applied to the blade beyond the instant it is released. All the mechanism that makes the blade go forward, it reversed inside the knife body to make the blade suddenly suck back in. When the blade is stopped by a butterfly's wing on firing it hasn't "derailed" at all, it simply lacked the inertia to carry forward upon striking an object. This is also WHY DA OTF knives CANNOT have super-tight blade to handle tolerances because that would add too much friction to make the knife work. For this reason you see all of the blade but the very base is cut-away or rebated to have zero friction with just a smidgen of friction at the moment of lock-up. The advantage of the DA OTF system is single-handed operation, and the fact that most normal people aren't going to use it to try and stab through a car door or chop down a tree. When stabbing into a human there is VERY LITTLE resistance for a double-edged blade, and flat bones such as the sternum offer little challenge as well as skull bone. If you want to see an OTF that will stab right through your head, go ahead and pick up a MT Halo V and do a live-stream video when you test it.

The Infidel has its issues but poor deployment or weak internals are not among them. If you knew your mechanics you would realize what force its sears AND pins combination/setup is capable of withstanding (more than Piranha Excaliburs (or similar make/setup) for example). Sears, though thin, are completely captured within the handle so they can't bend but they are long enough to bear a lot of pressure without fear of deformation or shearing/damaging massive pins they pivot on.

This knife is marketed to LE/MIL purely because it's a double edged dagger, and the deployment mechanism for this knife is what's so ingenious about it; the springs are not compressed until you move the thumb stud so there's absolutely zero chance of it accidentally going off in your pocket. The price tag has a lot to do with the complexity of this knife along with the steel type and treatment in this blade. If you've never owned a Benchmade you won't understand the price tag that goes along with one, but the minute you pick one up it will make sense; they're beautiful knives that are incredibly well made and will last a lifetime if properly cared for.

As for the deployment springs, they are strong enough for blade to reliably open/close even when mechanism is filled with water but blade will however not penetrate clothes (or paper) on opening - for safety reasons. The McHenry patented DA design is superb but some parts of the internal mechanism could in fact be improved - construction wise (but what couldn’t).
@randallscott-key8023 жыл бұрын
Ignorance is indeed bliss in your world. While a designer of parts might CLAIM that the blade stopping upon hitting an object is a "safety feature," the FACT is it's all part of the design of DA OTF knives....period. When the button is pushed the blade is placed under tension by spring. About 1/4" later the blade is released and is launched forward - carried by it's own mass - inertia. It reaches full travel and is captured by the lock at the other end. This is why EVERY DA OTF knife can be forced to malfunction on firing by anyone who understands how they work. The best combat OTF will always be a SA where a powerful spring shoves the blade forward under full spring-pressure throughout it's travel. Such knives can indeed fire the blade fully into a human on contact. They do require manual retraction, but blade to handle tolerance will always be superior. This is why Microtech invented the Halo series...the next best thing to a fixed blade combat knife.
@coolguy-fm2dy8 жыл бұрын
the launching mechanisms force doesn't matter, it's the locking mechanism that matters in a knife fight.
@randallscott-key8023 жыл бұрын
Finally! Someone who almost understands how DA OTF knives work! With DA knives the spring only applies launching force for a brief instant before the blade is released and Sir Issac Newton takes over - inertia. Quality locks keep the blade fully extended during manual stabbing. Thank you for your knowledge!

ALL double-action OTFs are jammed by a thin piece of paper. The spring itself is weaker than those inside the single-action OTFs, and the blade is propelled by inertia. Those who say that double-actions are shitty because they can't pierce through a piece of paper while being fired are totally assholes, because it means they don't even know what they are talking about. PS, the jammed blade can be easily remedied by pulling the blade with your fingers until you hear a faint click, which means the blade is properly locked into place, and you're back to business.

Would it be possible to upgrade the springs to make it more powerful?
@randallscott-key8023 жыл бұрын
No, because the spring is only driving the blade during the pre-tension phase right before it is released to launch forward. After that the blade is driving on inertia alone so anything it hits will stop it pretty easily. If you want a knife that can shoot the blade out and into a person you want a Single-action OTF with a strong spring such as the Halo V or VI.

I agree that 15 years ago this could not be bought except by law enforcement here in America. I think that for 400 bucks I could buy a much nicer combat knife, or knives. I was in the ARMY and I would use only a full tang fixed blade. I'm thinking 5 to 8 inch, blade maybe from Top's knives, or the tried and true rat tang Ka-bar 1220, or the larger 1271 with 1095 Cro-Van steel. It DOES NOT have to have a D-2 steel blade.
@Roadsideimports13 жыл бұрын
@themegajosh09 It is not a safety feature and it can not deploy in your pants, it is suppose to take some force to trigger it. That is why Microtech models Piranha and every other OTF that is double action all don't have safeties because they really are not needed because of the tension on the trigger. This is the truth, not some BS crap about the spring for deployment.

Everyone has there own opinions and the right to do so. I am Retired Law Enforcement (several years on SRT). My Infidel gave and gives me to this day, great service. Many friends, Police and Military love them as well, so no need to speak for us. You repeat firing in a paper towel and the blade disengages. That was a designed operation via LE/Military advisement, so accidental discharge would not injure. It was not designed to place against flesh and fire. I bought mine for use, not coolness.
@Roadsideimports16 жыл бұрын
There we go the truth should be told. The designs that they have they steal from custom knife makers, one good example is Robbie Dalton. Dalton only makes 500 to 600 in a run of knives and then moves on to the next project, so Benchmade jumps on and steals the designs and runs over to the US patent office and then get rights which then exclude even Dalton from selling the models again. That is a pretty disgusting way to do business. They do this to many knife makers and other companies.

Benchmade is kind of right on this. The basic design of ALL double-action OTF knives is a single or dual spring arrangement that places the blade under tension just before an internal lock releases it to fly forward (or backward). The method of operation is IDENTICAL to ALL other double-action OTF knives...not just some, but all because it is the way they much work.

Sure it would restrict the operation but the channel is much more forgiving on a Microtech and it is built to extreme conditions, Microtech takes more time and thought to things and doesn't claim that they are tactical combat knives, they market as field tools and does not take advantage of military persons, that is a good American company with morals. Any sand in any knife would cause issues but the point is the marketing and the false claims which are dishonorable and disgusting.

What ever they market the knife to the people who can legally buy it that is not rocket science genius. It is not illegal to purchase a switchblade in many states in the US and you do not have to be military or law enforcement at all. The state determines the law on the sale of items, there is the Federal Act to consider if you buy direct. So those in Oregon are allowed to buy them because of the Benchmade company location but this is not stated. It is clearly marketed.

DA OTF knives "misfire" against paper because the blade is flying forward under inertial with ZERO spring pressure after the instant of launch. There is no "safety feature" involved unless you want to believe marketing BS because ALL DA OTF knife blades will come to a halt when fired into paper. SA OTF knives are far more suited to CQB because the blade is driven forward FULLY by a powerful spring that can be sized to push the blade fully into a human with the knife in contact. The MT Halo series is an example of such a knife.

Now this is something I can appreciate. A seller possessing the audacity to state the truth rather than some defensive dribble. Kudos

I have to disagree with the premise of this video. The main reason I added a REAL Infidel to my collection is because every single feature of its design is shear genius! Let's drill down on what makes the Infidel superior to other DA OTF knives - including the MT line! (Of which I own a few) Everything the weird voice in the video said is patently false. That the Infidel sandwiches the blade between two polished steel guide frames makes it MORE reliable, not less. Polished steel is a much lower friction surface than anodized aluminum as is found on MT knives, or even Zinc-alloy found on the budget autos. Also, steel is much stronger than aluminum due to greater density. The thin guide frames are backed by thicker, aluminum handle ""halves" that add rigidity. The best material used where it is best to use! But there is more. Genuine MT knives have a single front blade lock measuring 0.152mm thick with rounded edge, fitted into a zero-tolerance pocket. A superb execution of a mediocre design, MT blade locks have been demonstrated to hold even when the knife blade is hammered through a 2x4! The Infidel uses TWO blade locks front and back. Each lock has approximately 4 mm of engagement surface to the locking boss attached to the blade shank. This boss, travels within the steel guide frame and has a flat nose section that buttresses against the front of the steel frame. The locks swing in behind along known arcs that match with the angled shape of the rear face of the locking boss. When the blade is extended, a 3-point lock-up is effected which results in ZERO blade play! Here however I have found one weakness of the design and its implementation. The locking boss is attached to the blade shank by a single machine screw and this screw is NOT coated with thread locker at the factory! As a result, the vibration of repeated firing cycles causes the screw to loosen and back out, allowing the blade to suddenly have significant play even though the locking boss is still being held solidly! The solution of course is to remove the top cover, gently lift off the upper, steel blade guide frame, then lift out the blade assembly, remove the screw, coat it with thread locker and reinstall, cinching it up tight. After this, the blade will not exhibit any "play" whatsoever. In effect, the Infidel design incorporates zero-play features long before the "Deadlock" was even thought up! Better QC on the part of Benchmade to insure the screw that anchors the boss to the blade is coated with thread locker would go a LONG way to eliminating any complaints about blade play. Also, if Benchmade had a design parameter writeup on their website, consumers would have more confidence in what they're buying...not that they don't have ample now! When the blade locks are extended behind the blade, the slider actuation tabs are situated over the lock arms just forward of the hinge point. Thus the blade locks CANNOT be "bounced" out of engagement by shock loads as can and does happen with lower priced OTF designs that use a single, thin, front lock, riding in an oversized pocket that allows it to move around under load. The firing button on the Infidel does have a long stroke, but this also means it's a softer stroke! Blade firing is less predictable than on MT designs, but nothing critical to final function. By using compression coil springs instead of extension coils, spring life is increased. Extension coils such as those found on MT and other "clone" designs fail where that single coil is bent 90 degrees to lock into the blade hook. Speaking of blade hooks, instead of bent flat steel pieces, the Infidel has massive, solid steel drums on either end of the centerline drive rod...they simply cannot be bent, or tweaked by long-term use! The simple, layered leaf springs used to tension the blade locks are inexpensive and last virtually forever! Other than the point where the locking boss is firmly secured between two blade locks and the steel perimeter frame, there is ample space between the steel guide frames to compensate for debris build-up within the knife. Of course, NO machine is tolerant of grit buildup, and all OTF knives are included. Just as one would check and clear out any debris that entered their primary firearm, the same holds true for ANY brand of automatic knife! The point of a DA OTF knife seems lost on many who think the DA OTF is somehow in competition with fixed blade designs. They are not. the "advantage" of the DA OTF is that they can be pocket carried in total safety, withdrawn, and blade deployed with ONE HAND! When the task at hand is completed, they can be "safed" by retracting the blade and dropped back into the pocket with ONE HAND! The DA OTF doesn't require practices hand gymnastics. It can be held firmly while deploying and retracting the blade. Swing blades and fixed blades CANNOT be "safed" by a simple blade retraction. Certainly there are many OTF knives around that can't be relied upon for tactical duties, but the Infidel isn't one of them! It is an amazing design, and I wouldn't want to be the dood who assumed it would fail!

Sounds like you can’t afford the real thing. Benchmade is a great company that cares about its customers. If you were police, military, or ems you could get it for a killer deal.

Finally someone with a brain, you are an exception to humanity lately. You are right about the politicians but it is more Hollywood's fault and idiots that think things in movies are the truth. Knife crime is committed by kitchen knives and machetes and yet those are never regulated, they band the things in movies that have nothing to do with reality, that shows how stupid humans are. A fixed blade is always the choice because it can not fold on your hand or collapse, hence the criminal use.

My own has been around since 2007/2008 or so, been on countless deployments, been a staple at home use. After the first 15 years or so it started hanging up on me 1 out of every 20 times it fails to open fully. Stay tf in your lane.

You got it, make junk and make false claims that it is a tactical military knife and sell it for an outrageous price. Benchmade is a shameful company and it is justice that they lost the military contract to Gerber, that is why all their junk is now all over the place, I hope they go Bankrupt.

And it is valid to point out that human's don't use their brains like you. If a knife can't lock up through paper, then the springs are quite weak and won't have solid lockup with use over time. It shows how daft people are with what they buy because of shit they see in movies that has no merit to reality or any use of practicality. It is amazing how stupid humans truly are with every aspect of life and thought processes.
