He’s a blowhard. His little tidbit about it being “better” to not use your support hand on the rear bag is laughably wrong. All these “tips” and claims he mentions but never actually puts holes in paper, that should tell you all you need to know.

Appreciate the tips on setting up at the bench. After you demonstrated this approach in a video several years back, I tried it and do indeed get much better results consistently, so have used your system ever since. In the southeast where I hunt, it’s hard to imagine going for a 500+ yard shot on game. There aren’t many shooting ranges that offer lanes out to 600 yards, so to even get that kind of practice in, one usually needs to have access to a friendly farm. In the woods in this part of the country, it’s rare to need to shoot at game over 100 yards away. Rarely does a 300 to 400 yard shot opportunity present itself across a crop field or down a power line. Effective hunting for us east of the Mississippi is often about getting close. My generation was taught that you don’t take pot shots at game animals to avoid the risk of wounding / causing unnecessary suffering. Having hunted for almost as long as you have, I’ve seen no shortage of folks who overestimate their shooting ability, thinking success at the bench will translate to success in the field, which often just isn’t so. Things in the field move, and often fast! And the wind blows at variable speeds from directions that change. Usually, one’s shooting position in the field is often far from the ideal you can be accustomed to at the bench for those that actually practice, which in my experience is a small a fraction of those who try to hunt. With ammo and components in short supply and prices up like crazy for cartridges, practice has gotten expensive. Long range shooting is great for paper targets or steel gongs. Relatively few people have the skill to warrant trying it on live game. Just be patient as a hunter and learn to get closer, which is where a lot of the satisfaction of hunting comes from anyway. We let far more animals walk on by than we take. That certainly does not diminish the enjoyment of hunting for anyone I know. Just seeing live game in its wild environment is special all by itself. If an animal can’t be taken cleanly with a high degree of certainty, then in my opinion the hunter has no business pulling the trigger. I also want to say as a customer that I could not be more pleased with the rifle you re-worked for me a year or so back. With the new barrel and bedding work the accuracy I get now is amazing. That .270 built on a Model 1903 Springfield action has delivered any number of one-hole groups at 100 yards with hand loads made for it. I wouldn’t have believed it possible the way it shot before you re-barreled it. Thank you for doing first rate work, and for sharing your experience. It is always helpful. All the best to you and Mrs. Selby.

Thank you Mr. Randy Selby for another inspiring video! I appreciate you revisiting you’re shooting techniques and hunting ethics, our younger hunters really need to practice both. I’ve taken your advice and set my bench up like yours. I’ll be adding a towel to my front bag and am on a quest to find that rear bag you have. Shot a 10 3/8” 5 shot group the other day with my 300 win mag at 600. I practice shooting 600 yds as often as the wind will allow me. Some days are better than others. Many doubt the 6 3/8” group I shot last year at that distance. I shoot 600 yds often but would never hunt our game at that distance. To many variables can change and I’m not willing to wound our game just to say I shot something at that distance. I’ve applied your methods to my shooting and can honestly say they all work! Period Thanks again for making this knowledge available to the hunting public. Chris from Illinois

Spot on. We didn't have a supported system that good at camp pendleton . YOU Cover the basics of marksmanship just as well as my instructors did in my k/3/5 scout Snipers platoon. They drilled us on the 9 facets of the basics of marksmanship until we had it mastered. Natural point of aim and trigger control seems like the hardest to master until I finally got enough practice in to get get it right. If you don't practice the right way, it's all for nothing but wasting ammo, and you can become just another Dade man in someone's trophy case.

So what do I love most about Mr. Selby? It is common to find an "expert" on various channels but RARELY will you find an expert with true wisdom. I found this channel within the last couple of days and have found myself binge watching. Last night I read through some of the comments and thankfully most were gracious and appreciative. Of course, there were a few of the typical "experts" haters out there and they are obvious. It's not always what Mr. Selby says that is important, it's understanding what he does not say. You don't get to this level without years of trial and error. There is no need to talk about the mistakes he made over the years, you can clearly hear that in the way he gives wisdom in his instruction. Like most of you, I would give anything to spend a few hours on this guys front porch just listening to his wise advise. I am and have been a hunter since the early 70's. There are things I am good at but will not claim to be an expert. I know enough to realize that there is a rifle, an optic and a cartridge for each given task that also requires a clear understanding of your own capabilities. It seems that everyone on KZbin now wants to be a Navy Seal sniper and send everything out over 800 yards. After listening to Mr. Selby, it is nice to know that I have at least taught my son, now 27, how to hunt obeying the law and how to harvest an animal ethically all while operating within his known capabilities. Just because you have a rifle, an optic and a load that is capable does not mean the shooter has the capability given the hunting conditions. I taught him how to match the rifle, the optic and the ammo for the task and practice to accomplish both. There is not one video I have watched that did not teach me some new aspect of rifles, scopes, ammo, technique, the list goes on and on. Ignore the haters Mr. Selby as I am sure you already do quite well. You are a blessing to the hunting and shooting community and a breath of fresh air on KZbin.

Love listening to the wisdom of this man.. I feel that this world needs to slow down and just relax and enjoy what little time we have on this earth. All this new technology takes a lot of feel out of things.. Seen the other day that people use fish finders that you can actually see the lure going down and the fish biting the lure.. What sportsman people have turned out to be.. not in too be. Also... all of this shooting technology that lets people think they can shoot farther than they actually can.. Chukars, actually, but they are fun to listen to. Chukars were introduced to the United States from Pakistan in 1893, but few survived. Between 1931 and 1970, additional introductions in the western U.S. helped establish wild populations in 10 western states (California, Idaho, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming) and in British Columbia, Canada. Chukars also successfully colonized the six main islands in Hawaii after introductions in the 20th century. Now they are common in the western United States and British Columbia.

Mr Shelby, This past late antler-less season in Michigan, I checked my rifle impact at potential ranges (50-150 yd) before going out in temperatures and conditions similar to actual hunting conditions. The weather front moved in close to time forecast, we felt action of movement was high. With darkening skies and colder winds deer begin moving into a clearing where they had been feeding. About 50yds out doe moved out from behind berm into view, intently looking our way. Having moved into shooting position with firearm mounted, but on V stick( which I never used before , instead of supporting with forearm) I held for high shoulder shot, however since not supporting the forearm the shot went high creasing the top of back and only removing hair. The deer did drop down, however extensive search found no blood or evidence of permanent injury. I wanted to illustrate the supporting the front of the firearm for maximum support as you illustrated in your video message, by placing your support hand significantly ahead of trigger guard and rear anchor point. I have been shooting that way for almost 70 years. It has proved effective as not lost one dear until this year. Later I made a measured shot at 120 and dropped deer where it stood. I have urged several old and new friend to follow the channel of you and Mrs. Shelby as information and excellent production team.

I think sometime is the temptation of taking a long rain shot at a game animal is if someone had a rare opportunity and put down a lot of money to go on a hunt that they may never get to do again, so the Temptations to go ahead and take a shot and risk it to see what happens but that’s not fair to the animal.

Same here, i did that hand on scope method, a idea i came up with also is socks with modeling clay to use also to "nest" the rifle from vibration and movement, with the method i proved it even indoors with a air rifle and thousands of rounds to research myself on bench rest methods, spring air rifles recoil forward so its different then powder burners, also i took a laser motion sensor on these cheap plastic tables to prove to a guy on youtube he needs a better table or use those sand bag types that weight down 2 wheel drive vehicles in the winter, come in 60 lbs bags so if a person doesn't have a good stirty table to use the weight on table to dampen vibration at least can make it better, the heart beat by the way at 15 yards with my most accurate air rifles can toss shots off up to 1/16 of a inch, meaning 1/8 inch at 30 yards and even more as distances keep doubling, electronics and phone gadgets should only be used as a rough estimate or just in the ball park to help you get close. real world shooting paper to get center field, no matter what though wind, air pressure and angle you shoot can have vast constant changes on non flat terrain, so its your area you live you know the peaks and valleys and changes, where as hunters take apps with them only to learn that the old school way is better since things are constantly changing on terrain, and this problem of constant changes to never take long shots risking injuring game never to be found again, 250 yards should be the best since most hunting calibers shoot flat out to that distance making it so spinning turrets and making adjustments dont wear out the scopes sooner and it not being able to zero and settle a zero as well anymore, at 250 yards adjustments on a scope are minimal since the distance is flat shooting and almost center holds on all game even if just a simple duplex fine hair or thick hair reticle can get the job done, a good hunter i think get close to the game and doest play the snipe risking long range shot wounding game. Having the right bullet for the right distance and the right accuracy preserving the game from running off getting wounded and dampening our ego not intentionally taking long shots on game to get it in a video, so many wound the game and shoot many times yet upload only the shots that took down game making it look like it was just one shot over 1000 yards, this is insanity and i never will be around any hunter thats unethical making a lot of you guys look bad who are ethical and know your limitations and not stretching your ego

🤠 Most people that hire Hunting Guides in the Rocky Mountains are out of state hunters that are comming in from fairly flat terrain ("flatlanders") and simply don't have the ability to practice in the conditions that they will be shooting and usually never even consider factoring in the slope of the terrain in their shot! That is why they have no business taking a shot beyond 500 yards (usually less)! 🤯

If you can't make the shot 100% of the time; don't take the shot. If a marksman has any question in their mind about the shot, don't send the bullet down range.

Good large bags filled with superfine blasting sand is as dead as the ground that you stand on. I have a competition rest and it is definitely nice but it really isn't more steady than what I described. Just easier acquisition. Go to your bank and ask for a couple of canvas money bags and add superfine blasting sand. All of this costs about $10 and a quality rabbit ear leather bag is about $40. That setup is as dead as can be.

Montana estimates its game loss to poor hits on animals at 15 to 30 % of the total yearly harvest . What that means for every 100 elk and deer harvested, another 15 to 30 are lost to wounding.. DO NOT SHOOT PASSED YOUR ABILITY, which in my opinion that should be 400 to 450 yards……. for everybody…………

Would appreciate it if you talked some about eye relief. Where does that fit into the equation of installing the scope? Seems like everyone’s head is a little different.

Well said. I agree that the game's welfare should come first in our thinking. For the ethical hunter to be sure of a kill shot placement is the most important thing. I might also say that other than shooting pests one should never make a kill that you are not going to eat or otherwise use. The world is full of folk these days, that seem to enjoy just killing for the sake of it and without feeling.

You may be thinking of Les Bowman. Or that his head gunsmith taught me at Trinidad State Junior college, as did two other of his contemporaries. Thanks for watching.

I've found shooting off sandbags in a standing position to be superior. I have a very long neck, arms etc. Shooting from a sitting position really strains my neck
