I’m glad you did this comparison. I see that riding flat in smaller waves is great with a pivot fin, and riding on rail is ideal with a raked fin. Got it! Thank you.

The correct answer is both. It is easy to carry three or four fins and a few tools in your daypack and your mood, or the tide, may change.

Thanks Ben for the fin insight.What is the difference in having your fin positioned more forward vs more back.

No worries at all Geoff!! The further back the fin placement the stiffer the turns will be and the further forward the looser the board will feel :) 🤙🤙 hope that helps!!

Shitry waves mate 😂 Have you ever tried a turbo tunnel fin? I own a 9.5" one, pretty weird looking, but I find it really versatile.

Hey Ben, I’m 6’3 and 90kg and am looking at buying a log soon. I’m having a little trouble finding info on size guide for longboards. Do you have any ideas about that? I’ve been surfing a 9’2 for a while and that feels like it’s too small for noseriding. I’m thinking 9’6 or 9’8. I appreciate all the knowledge you share with the longboard community 🙏🏄‍♂️

Interesting, I have been using a pívot fin in all conditions for several months and just recently put a raked out 11,5 Thomas fin on (which I religiously used on a lighter board…) but after a couple sessions using it on the heavy board I am surfing it feels a little loose and I am definitely going back to my 10” pivot fin… could just be that I need to get used to the raked fin again though🤷🏻‍♂️🤙

What would be best for a beginner? From ur video, the pivot fin would slow the board down to allow for more straight ahead control when hopping up on the board....or another fin would be best? Thx
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 7 ай бұрын
For a beginner I like to recommend the raked/Greenough style just because of how versatile and well rounded it is. Either are acceptable and user preference plays a part, but I wouldn’t necessarily prioritise a fin to slow down your trim speed specifically, that can come down to trim line adjustments and changing your position :) Hope that’s somewhat helpful!!! 🙏🤙

He gets his boards from South Coast surfboards based in Torquay. Victoria Australia. Beautiful surfboards and also a bit pricey! Like any good quality longboard. I hope this helps.

Hi Ben, compromises are fun huh. I use both a Stage4 Volan and A Stage glass on a 10" typically up to chest high. I am a fan of both. IMO the 6 fives you both the fluid turn and the hold but I think it is probably actually a med to fast fin so maybe not the drag the Pivots are supposed to. Have you tried one? Cheers - Waipu, NZ

Hi Ben, I just bought a 9'2ft x 22 7/8 × 2 7/8, 72L longboard for small waves, 50/50 rails, symmetrical template, slightly narrow spooned round nose, flat bottom, slight entry continuous rocker, squash tail, PU 6oz+6oz both sides, double stringer (blend of Cal and East coast shape). I'm new to longboarding. I usualy surf a Takayama egg 7'6, and a hand shaped mini simmons. Being 61yo, I can't pop up fast on my ms, that’s why I bought that longboard. My question is off course about fin... Beach break, regularly offshore wind, 1 to 5ft slow waves that tend to close out when they hit the sand bar, and become hollow. (When the conditions are better I surf my egg.) Which type of fin would recomend : Pivot or A4 style ? It seems to me that pivot would be a good choice, but unsure. What do you think about the board I bought ? I'm 5'6 and 158. Thanks for your very interesting vids 👍

Love the comparison! I have both but find myself using the greenough more often due to surfing mostly point breaks. Are sidebites blasphemous for noseriding, or do some people use them?
