@ohmygodlawl

1. Portion sizes, lots of meals are half of the equivalent size of their counterparts in America, this includes drinks also. 2. Long working hours + convenience store meals, many office workers will just grab something to eat in the convenience stores for lunch during weekdays, which reduces a lot of their daily calorie intakes. (Many Koreans also skip breakfast, so dinner is really the only big meal of the day) 3. Metropolis like Seoul or Busan are very walkable cities you don't NEED a car to get around places unlike in America where most cities you need to drive for almost everything. Walking everyday forces you to burn calories throughout the day. 4. People will not be afraid to comment or remind you on how you look, or if you've gained any weight so you will be constantly reminded and be aware of your physical appearance, not the same culture as America where it's a very sensitive and personal topic so people will not be pressured into losing weight. Theres probably more reasons but these are just the ones that came to my mind

5. Quality of Food. It's easy and cheap to get whole foods in Korea (well Asia mostly) and not processed food. America is a land of processed food, eats ton of it, and widely available. You'll mainly see high obesity in areas where the bad food can be purchased cheap and in bulk amounts.. like most inner cities here in America. I think in Korea there's a level of portion control because the pizza you ate in this video woulda been twice as big with topping overkill here in the states, it woulda fed at least 10 people, easily.

I’ve wondered about it. And figured out the reason with respect to Koreans around me. So when you see Koreans eating and doing mukbangs and going to cafes, they do it once in a week or month. And remaining time they are on a diet or fasting. Or living on Americano. Some have gifted genetics. Once my Korean roommate didn’t drink water either while fasting, I got worried for her. She said she’s not using her energy that particular day so she doesn’t need anything, she would start her day with Americano next day. I can’t relate to this. Also this roommate went to the ER at least twice in front of me.

europeans due to their evolution in very cold environments are wired to pack on fat and calories instead of expelling them (it keeps them warm). Thus when modern day society comes about they get fatter and fatter
@ViperOfMino
@ViperOfMino Жыл бұрын
@@dazzaMusic Very true. Also all of this "genetics this genetics that" is a load of BS. Metabolism does not vary that much in humans (ALL humans) that people can eat a lot more than others and not gain weight. The simple reality is that if you eat more calories than your body can use, you gain weight (fat). If you eat less than your body can you, you lose weight. And again, metabolism, unless you have some medical issue like thyroid problems, doesn't vary THAT much in humans that some people can just eat a shit ton all the time and not get fat while others can't even have an apple without getting fat. That's just fatlogic and it's a myth. There's a lot of reasons why us Americans tend to be more on the obese side, and none of them are about some difference in genetics or metabolism compared to other people.

Korean-American here, I noticed when I visited Korea, yeah there's a lot of fast foods and late night drinking/drunk foods, but on the day-to-day all the meals are generally fresh foods, lots of vegetables through the banchan, just a moderate amount of meat (but Koreans RARELY ever eat processed shit), lots of soups, and kimchi actually has a ton of probiotics that help keep the gut biome really healthy. Everything is fresh, very little processed shit, and the meals have a good balance of macros. A big thing that has led to American, and particularly Mexican obesity rates, is the huge consumption of soda. Koreans rarely ever touch the stuff, and I think that helps a lot. The only thing is that Koreans still do love to smoke cigarettes and eat a shit ton of instant ramen, so I don't know how they're still keeping healthy from that hahaha

You brought up alot of great thought inducing points Ben! I've got a few... 1. As a Canadian, and of "western build" - how do I seem to fit into airplane seat belts better in Korea or any Southeastern Asian countries I've flown with, having lots of extra strap left compared to when I'm on a North American airline, the seatbelts only have 1 inch of extra strap left after being buckled and tightened for my body type???? 2. Why when we visited Seoul did it have higher levels of smog then even Beijing, China?! What?! It was shocking to us too! Seoul seems extremely healthy, clean, modern 3. I truly appreciate the level at which a Korean man or even women for that matter can consume copious amounts of liquor, beer & Soju (usually 17% alc), they're hearty good drinkers!! 4. Why do Korean men seem fascinated by my naturally long red hair, and Korean women seem to stare & glare. I personally love the look of a Korean lady with long hair! Go red ladies

Americans are often very harsh towards other cultures traditions, ways of socializing, and just overall culture that I don't think is appropriate. Across all of asia, you see the food portion sizes that can be pretty insane but people stay prety thin regardless. I used to think it was portion sizes, but not so sure. Like at Mcdonald's the only change to portion size is the fries and soda. In Japan you see some of these bento's and it's like here's a whole fried cutlet, some huge fried tempura, a ton of rice for like $7 and people are pretty ok. In China, a bowl of lamian can be like 2 person portions worth along with a super fatty broth and again not as big an issue. Not to mention hot pot and skewers. I think food culture is just different and maybe they aren't adding as much fillers or not the same fillers like in the US? Japan's got a bad rap for letting a lot of stuff you may not want in your food in there anyway but I guess it pales in comparison.

Some people talk about obesity in the states and how we have the highest percentage around the world as a way to say, look everyone eats good there is no starving. But, it's actually two sides of the same coin. Economic inequality here is so rampant that often the cheapest things to purchase are unhealthy junk food and fast food. Families where both parents are working rarely have the time to cook, and ordering a pizza is much simpler after a long exhausting day. In Korea, you all have a better social safety net with subsidized resources for the general population. While there is still certainly bad economic inequality where many suffer, as is characteristic of capitalist societies, it is not as bad as the tent cities that we have here. So, although sure portion sizes have some say in it. It's also many other economic factors that are characteristic of the society as a whole, (including unhealthy ingredients in food and immoral ways to aquire them), that create starvation and obesity in the states.
@henlolneh

Koreans aren't obese because the majority of them have rather strict eating cycles in order to eat the way they do. By eating cycle I mean they literally under eat severely Monday - Friday so that they can go ham on weekends and eat whatever they want. It really isn't hard for a normal human to eat around ~1200-1400 calories a day + walk 8-10k steps a day (4-500 calories burned on average) which puts them at a deficit of ~1200-1400 calories a day times 5 = ~6000 calorie deficit per working week (5days). Which allows them to literally go 3k calories per day Friday + Saturday and still not gain weight and for some, even still LOSE weight because they are still walking the same amount on the weekends (because Korea's city infrastructure and layout literally forces you to walk).

But the way I view it is pretty similar to ordering e.g. Japanese food in the U.S. A cuisine that isn't native will always be overpriced and not as good quality due to imported ingredients, cook skills etc. Imo it's just unfortunate that unhealthy American food (and DRINKS) are ridiculously cheaper than the healthier options. Whereas in other countries, there's typically enough healthy options that people can make equal decisions. The upside is that you can come back to the U.S. anytime and order a ton of Papa John's for the price it should be :)

Koreans probably just walk alot. Basic walk is so powerful you don't even notice that. I knew a guy, who was struggling to gain some weight, even tho he ate like 3500-4k cal a day. And one time we were on the same trip or something like that i don't remember, and i observed him. Dude was working and making alot of phone calls, while he was talking on a phone he would walk around. And i was like, dude no wonder, you been walking for 3 hours straight right now. By 14.00 he alrdy had 15k footsteps. No activity = you gain fat even on 2k calories.

1. Korean food tend to have less greasy ingredients, sugar, salt, etc. Smaller in portion too. 2. Korean people are very sensitive about how they look. They work out to keep in shape to reverse the amount of food and alcohol consumed as much as possible. 3. Easy access and use of public transportation, walkable streets, stairs provide basic exercise needed to burn calories.

It's about the culture, collectivist mentality and their native food being less fatty (although that's changing with all the cheese being added everywhere). In the future, with people getting mentally/physically weaker and addicted to sugar/fat from early age, there's going to be much more obesity for sure. So far collectivist merciless mentality is keeping everyone in check

a subjective guess on this matter: human being in culture that aspire to be "normal" or "the same" through comparison with others , are more conscious of their image, not just body image, also impressions. It's the power of the "norm", it's about how important being normal is to a certain culture. This is an ancient culture in the east, where individualism should be killed as human need to be more "constant" which is good for the stability of the country/society/ruling force. NOT saying this eastern tradition/culture is bad, everything has both side, positives of being conscious of your impression on other people include: you are less likely to hurt people unknowingly, or make people feel uncomfortable unknowingly, which is VERY IMPORTANT as a human being. also all the other reason but this is a reason that i believe to be true

It's because people in America don't have the opportunity to walk very much. The infrastructure in the US necessitates that people drive to wherever they need to go. Look up obesity statistics in walkable cities in the US (New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc.) and you'll realize it's a car problem. I really hope this doesn't come off as negative because I've loved your videos for a long time but just thought it might be interesting.

Gotta say it is because people usually commute by public tranportation since it is easier and cheaper so reasonable way in Seoul. And actially the obesity rate among young korean men in their 2030s is about 50% so it isn't entirely true nowadays. That insane level of considering their thin figure mostly applies to women in korea. But also usually korean diet is very plant based or at least natural made ingredients I mean less processed food. I believe it helps not gain weight and there are few kinds of fried food in daily korean diet. You would know if you've seen how koreans eat Korean bbq. We eat maybe more veggies than meat itself even when we go out to feast on MEAT. Btw I'm not including mukbang people or the people on their special diet like they don't eat much during week days and have their 'cheat day' on weekends. Lastly, koreans do not include their daily meal the "dessert" dessert. They eat fruits and they call it a dessert. Like wtf? And their way on compliments on dessert is "it is good because it is not sweet."

In my opinion i think it comes down to how the food in the US is processed and how much of the food we actually consume is processed in one way or another. If you compare the difference between the amount of processed and unprocessed food we consume i feel the numbers would be shocking. If I had to guess I would say the majority of the people who are obese in the US are consuming 90% of their food as processed foods that are filled with toxic seed oils and tons of sugar. Not only that but when food like this is so processed it doesn't hold any real nutrients so your body doesn't ever feel satisfied so you feel like you need to keep eating in order to feel sustained. Also a huge reason people get obese as well is a ton of people choose what they eat out of convenience and don't take the time to make home cooked meals because they work all day and get home to late that they just want to order something to make it easy or they are just lazy as well. I think i read something that said average person in the US orders 1 meal a day 4 times a week. So majority of the types of food you get here out of convenience are highly processed food unless you want to pay a lot of money for quality.

I think you hit it right on the head with your last point. Back when I got married in Korea in 2017, I ate so much food afterwards for an entire week and I lost weight which was confusing at first but then I realized we walked everywhere and took the subway. With how good the public transportation system is in Korea driving isnt necessary unless you traveling to the outskirts of the country.

One thing I notice about American foods when I go there is everything tastes sweet. Even savory foods. I think they juice up everything with sugar to make it more addictive and it leads to the massive obesity problem they have.

they always change the serving size to hide how bad the food is for you in the quantity you would normally eat it. I remember seeing a container of premade mac and cheese in the deli at my local grocery store and it was clearly the quantity you would eat in one meal and it had 3 serving per container. I swear there was like 20+ grams of fat in that small container. Unreal

As far as obesity, its the food and lifestyle habits. Koreans and Japanese eat 1. smaller portions (as you repeatedly point out whenever you order food) 2. local food is relatively healthy (lots of veggies and soups...not much fried stuff or bready stuff) 3. Koreans do alot of walking. As American fast food becomes more popular, my guess is obesity will increase in Korea and other Asian countries.

i think transportation has a lot to do with it. in america, a lot of people walk few steps out to their house to their drive way. in korea, some many people take public transportation that they have to walk to, etc.

The American brand pizza places are way more expensive here. Pizza hut, domino's, papa John's are all around 25-30k won for a large size pizza. There are little shops though that you can get a decent size for around 15k ^^ I always go to those places cos the other places are a total ripoff

Koreans and Asians in general value health, fitness, discipline and self respect. A lot of Americans lack these values and that’s why 36% - 40% of Americans are obese. Obesity is a choice no one forces obese people to eat too much 🤷‍♂️
