Great video! I had the opportunity to visit Paul's workshop, with Sean Cliver last year. It was super cool to watch them sort out some upcoming Strangelove decks and after that, Paul offered to help me make a board. Using his Create-A-Skate template, I designed and cut out the (my) ideal "Zip Zinger" style shape, which was AWESOME! I picked a cruiser so I would have it forever. As a carpenter myself, and OG Schmitt Stix fan of 35 years, I was definitely nerding out. It was fun to poke around in his shop too. I asked a lot of questions and participating in the process solved a lot of mysteries. It was an incredible experience. I got the board custom screened by @rochambo with a picture of my cat, Bowie.🥰

My favourite woodshop since I had a Element Natas deck back in 1999!! I just love the kicks in the Professor's boards & the pop too. Quasi, WKND, Meow, Free Done, older Habitat & Element all work so well for me. I still have my old Natas decks because I have such fond memories of those days skating & I swear it was the Professor's boards that helped me improve. I also still have a AWS Dill deck from around 2009 that was only skated a handful of times. If I could choose only 1 woodshop to have boards made it would be PS Stix. Thanks for this awesome live tour Ben & the Professor!!

@@DarmokAtTanagra I live in the UK & some US brands are using a different woodshop to their customers in the UK & Europe. Toy Machine are now all Chinese made here in the UK. I never had the chance to try a PS Stix Toy Machine. Quite a few brands have jumped from PS Stix to BBS during COVID as PS Stix had to follow COVID guidelines & couldn't produce what was needed. *Awesome* tour and conversation! This is peak board nerdery, and it feels somehow like a real piece of history. Incredible to see all those templates! One nitpick w/ Paul at 10:17 - “If everything is perfectly symmetrical, it’s like having a pocket knife with one blade... whereas if you have a pocket knife with two blades... then you’re in a better place.” Has he ever talked to anyone who cares about pocket knives? Serious pocket knives almost universally have a single blade, because that single blade is a lot more functional than two smaller blades. I agree that there are some benefits to a directional board, but he’s used that argument before, and if anything, he is using it backwards. I would buy that a single direction might superior function for the same reason a single blade has superior function. In the case of skateboards, I think that symmetrical boards are overall superior, however. At least as a beginner/intermediate skater, I love having to figure out just one pop, rather than two ... but a big nose is also handy to flick off of. I mostly think board manufacturers prefer directional boards because they wear out faster, and make people buy boards more often...
@TysonHook-22- Жыл бұрын
Do you know much about pocket knives yourself? cause one of the worlds oldest and most respected pocket knife brands is Case knives, they are famous for there 2 blade pocket knives which sometimes feature a file as well, they've been using the same trapper knife design for well over 100 years... Schmit is old, these are the type of knives hes referring to as a pocket knife. There is many reasons two blades can serve better then one in a pocket knife, one such reason for a 2 bladed pocket knife is so that one blade can be a designated beater and rough work type of blade and one blade is your sharp precision cut blade, its the exact same philosophy behind double bit axes... which if you know the history of forestry they were vary vary popular back in the day... because when you march deep into the woods to chop trees all day long, the last thing you want is your day to be cut short because you F'd up you only axe edge in the field and maybe dont have the time or tools on hand to re-sharpen in the field, not to mention that time spend fixing up a edge, is time wasted not chopping... hence the popularity of double bit axes back in the day for forestry work before the invent of chainsaws. The philosophy behind his statement isnt hard to understand and many skaters understand that using the nose vs. tail to pop a trick is vastly different. I believe most skaters naturally figure this out vary early on well attempting to conquer the ollie, during the struggle of mastering the ollie most kids find out that they can get a higher pop from the nose vs off the tail... even if they dont understand the science behind it. It becomes vary clear and evident to most skaters early on that the nose and tail can be used as two different tools. ex. struggling to ollie up a ledge, try doing it popping from the nose and it may give you that extra pop needed to get onto the ledge. There is benefits and disadvantages to both designs (asymmetrical vs. twins) and as Schmit always says what works best for one person isnt gonna work best for everyone, but everyone has that perfect design/shape that caters best to there style, its just a matter of time, dedication and experimentation to find what that is that works best for you and your skate style.
@thepancakemann Жыл бұрын
@@TysonHook-22- This is an excellent comment and deserves to be praised as such without someone saying TOO LONG DIDNT READ. My nitpick is that as PS and BD say in the video, the nose and tail are the way they are because it's been the standard for more than 20 years. I imagine it has nothing to do with wear.

@00ffdc Жыл бұрын
Not really. It is quite hard to replace a worker (in a 3rd world country, I might add) by a robot. Takes a lot of money, research, and effort. Recent years show that it is much easier to replace so-called creative class and/or office workers with an AI software. So software engineers, designers, translates will struggle a lot in the upcoming 5 or 10 years. While some Mexican or Chinese guys still will be doing their sh***y jobs for $2 a day .

I actually understood the printing part. Im an offset printer. RGB is red green blue CMYK is cyan magenta yellow and black. I used CMYK and those are the colours that produce every tone you need as little dots on the surface on top of eachother. I think this heat transfer method is the best atleast its the easyest. Screen printing takes time because you need all the colors seperately printed on top of eachother and equipment needs to be cleaned all the time etc..

Yeah, people are clueless about what it takes to manufacture a quality board. I don't necessarily like paying over $65-70 for a deck but I completely understand why they're selling for that much (tbh $65-70 isn't that expensive). We've just been spoiled for so long, since it took forever for board prices to finally start increasing along with the rise in costs of materials, labor, etc. It's actually crazy boards were only $50 like 4-5 years ago
