Bending and forming PLEXIGLAS®: Perfect thermoforming in just a few steps

PLEXIGLAS® is very easy to bend and can therefore be shaped in a many different ways. All you need to do is heat the acrylic glass. These instructions on thermoforming demonstrate the procedures for both surface heating and linear heating.

I have to form and bend a plexiglas strip 1000mm length, 80mm wide and 10mm thickness like a spiral. Can I use this heater and what's the right temperature for bending?

Hello Aldo Alessi, for the heating of PLEXIGLAS®, low-cost models of infrared quartz radiators may also be sufficient. Please send us a personal message via our Facebook account if you would like to have a link to a product suggestion for an infrared quartz radiator from us: facebook.com/PLEXIGLASen/ When heating, it is important that the distance between the radiators and the material surface is at least 100 mm. A more frequent turning of the material helps to prevent overheating of the surface. The forming temperature, if it can be measured, is between 150° and 170°C. Can you take hardened plexiglass like say the 2 x 2 sheets of clear plexiglass that you can buy at Home Depot and heat them up with this machine and bend and form them ?

Buy a sheet, test it out and post what you find here. I think the hardened stuff is probably just heated and 'quenched' to give it the hardness. Might be worth heating the whole sheet up and letting it cool slowly before trying to do anything with it; I think if you tried strip heating it straight up, it might crack along the edge of the heat affected zone where the hard sections end.

You can probably buy it in tube form, otherwise you would have to make molds with timber and then glue the ends together with acetone, but your seam has to be pretty near perfectly fitting for it to work properly.
