I was shivering just watching you wading in ice water. You're a better man than I!😬 I've entertained the notion of hiking the length of the Buckskin for a while but after a 4-day trip hiking into it from the Paria River end, I gave up on the idea. The Gulch was a profoundly beautiful place but the tight canyon walls began to feel oppressive to me after a couple of days, not getting very much sunlight at the bottom. Still, I'm glad to have been there. Coyote Gulch is another cool canyon to visit.

It was fun. And I was over my head (literally), but it was satisfying to visit a place that's been on my list for a really long time. I can understand the oppressive feeling. I wasn't in the canyon long enough to feel it, but I'm sure a few more days down there and I would have been craving some sunlight! Happy Trails!

Did the trip many years ago and a large buck at fallen the previous year and was wedged just above head height in the narrowest section. He was still well preserved due to the cool temps. Apon exiting the canyon in a wider and warmer section that wasn't the case for a mountain lion that had met his demise. He was old and his hair was silver. My friend Jared and I did the hike years ago. We hiked through buck skin then down the Paria to Lees Ferry. We hadn’t made any plans on how to get back to our car, we spent one night out. We figured we could hitch hike back to our car. So we went to the Navajo bridge, there were two Indian girls selling jewelry. We asked them what our chances were at getting a ride. They said slim to none. We tried for about 15 minutes. Then headed up,to the Marble canyon lodge. They gave us a list of people we could pay to take us back to our car. Luckily a local Indian women agreed for $90 to come pick us up. She asked us why did we did it in two days, and if we even enjoyed it. I’ll never forget the look of puzzlement on her face. I’m much older and wiser now and take more time to enjoy my hikes with my wife. Fun hike, thanks for your video. Oh, we did it in Teva sandals, not recommended. I liked you socks.

I understand your point about the dangers of Buckskin Gulch, and by extension any outdoor venue, especially in winter. But I fully commend the professionalism of our shuttle driver. I was in communication with him months in advance. He asked thorough questions about my experience...he even researched me! He and I stayed in touch to discuss the conditions. In our discussions I believe he sensed in me a lot of experience (hiking, kayaking, mountaineering) and also a humility that mother nature is not to be taken lightly! That same guide has refused service to many people. But he felt confident that Candice and I would make good decisions based on our experience. You are right that there are guides out there who will drop off people without ascertaining their experience level, but not Yermo. He's one of the good guys!

My experienced friends and I attempted Wire pass to White Houses and had to turn back impassable. It was summer and I was freezing in the water. Winter hikes should be banned. Top 10 most dangerous hikes.
@whistlepig Жыл бұрын
Glenn, thanks for the comment. Yes, this hike is dangerous, and not just during the monsoon season. The temperature of the water in winter makes it a potential death zone. And knowing that before doing this hike is key. But banning a hike is a slippery slope. I do believe it is up to the managing entity (BLM, Park Service, Forest Service, etc) to educate people on the risks, but ultimately it is up to each of us to do the research and decide for ourselves whether any adventure is worth the personal risk. For instance, my partner and I did a ton of research and consulted with a trusted local. We were fully prepared for waist-deep water....but not for chest deep. Had we brought neoprene uppers, we could have continued. But lacking this piece of gear made our decision to turn around an easy one. You bring up an interesting point, which gets me thinking about how many people die each year in the Grand Canyon -- usually from heat exhaustion and a lack of preparation/education. But I can't imagine shutting the park down during the dangerous summer season or banning the trails to the bottom of the canyon. I wonder what ways information can be better disseminated. Information and experience: the best way to arm ourselves against disaster in the backcountry. Thanks again for the comment. It's an important discussion for all of us to consider!

You are allowed to fly a drone over a wilderness area, but not supposed to launch one from within a wilderness area (same goes for a National Park). I believe the reasoning is the potential disruption of wildlife and to other hikers. Nice job exploiting one of the few places less affected by todays society. Hope your egos were fed by your selfish indulgence because that's obviously what your goal was in the first place. If you ever go back, when you step on a dirty diaper or empty beer can maybe you will realize that it was due to your own doing. Just be glad that only 10 thousand people even bothered to view your video in the first place because you are boring and not very😊 interesting at all. As for me, I'm formally requesting an investigation into illegal activity while filming your adventure.
@thewanderingsoul71 Жыл бұрын
How did you get permission to fly a drone there? We were explicitly told by rangers at BLM that drones are illegal in that area and thus we did not take ours.
@whistlepig Жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I decided to take mine because it was winter (February) and expected not to see any people, which we didn't. I convinced myself it was a victimless crime. I have gotten some pushback from a few people who've watched my video and have consequently spent a lot of time thinking about this. I've decided I should not have done it AND I won't do it again in a wilderness area. I understand the purpose of the rule (it can pose a danger to other people and/or harass wildlife), and even though I didn't do any of these things, it was still breaking a protocol that we drone users need to follow. That's where I currently am in my evolution of thinking with drone usage. Thank goodness there's a lot of national forest out there -- that's where I fly it now!

In olden times (just a few decades ago) you had to search for these places and do some research to find them. Now it’s selfies and gps and hordes of assholes crawling over everything. The internet and social media. The worst things that ever happened to the outdoors and human experience. Ugh.
@whistlepig Жыл бұрын
I hear you and agree in many ways to what you're saying (despite being the person who made this video). However, I hesitate to call people who enjoy the outdoors with technology "a**holes." I'm a Gen-Xer. I grew up without a cell phone and without internet. I still prefer hard copy maps over a GPS. But I also love telling a story and bringing my interpretation of a beautiful place to those who are unable (or even unwilling) to go see it for themselves. If having a drone and a GoPro helps me to tell that story while not infringing on the enjoyment of others (in other words, we saw zero people the in the canyon), then I'm all for it. And Iike you, I'm personally not into selfies or visiting a place just to get an Instagram photo, but I support the right of the folks who choose to do this. In fact I support any reason for someone getting into nature. We need more people falling in love with these places. The downside is more foot traffic, but the upside is a greater human-nature connection. That equals more people willing to fight to protect these places. And that's something I'm behind 100%.

@@whistlepig That all sounds good until you see what has happened to places (I can’t bring myself to even name them) over the last couple of decades. Or even towns like Moab (or states like utah ) which is now a complete shithole. There are only a tiny, shrinking number of places where even a semblance of solitude or quiet or a sense of being even slightly disconnected from the insanity the internet and over population has created is possible. It’s all being swept away just as abbey predicted, but that still trumps, “likes” or thumbs up or subscribers. I feel sorry for young people now. A world and the adventures you could have in it, that I took for granted simply no longer exists. But we do have Instagram and the Kardashians and that’s all that matters now. Ugh and pathetic.

It’s illegal to fly a drone in Buckskin Gulch, it’s in a wilderness area. I’m surprised you wouldn’t do your homework before flying a drone there.

I appreciate the comment and understand your concern. I think anyone who operates a drone is obligated to follow the primary rules: don't fly one in the vicinity of an airport, don't fly one over a crowd, don't harass wildlife, and don't disrespect people's right to privacy. I violated none of these. In fact, I chose to hike in the winter because I knew there would be no crowds or wildlife to disturb. In other words, it's a victim-less crime...unlike something like driving over the speed limit (which I'll bet both you and I have done at some point in our lives) which actually can endanger lives. I'm not saying you're wrong for feeling that way, just sharing my perspective. So again, thank you and I respect your comment.

Hypothermia....LOL. Like getting in chest deep icey water wasn't your first clue? Cute girl! Move on as this one's not too bright!😂
