A few things to mention, Viva did actually premiere before Blue Horizons, in 2001. San Antonio and San Diego also had an educational show during the Believe days called “The Shamu Story”. I was actually at the last One Ocean at San Antonio. It wasn’t as big of a celebration as in San Diego, but the last one was during the 36,000 rescue milestone weekend. The trainer wore extra makeup and glitter. They had all 5 whales in different parts of the show, and Kylan, one of the trainers, said “For the last time ‘One Ocean!’”. The 36,000 weekend was also the last weekend before Christmas, and traditionally, San Antonio didn’t perform One Ocean during Christmas, only Miracles. So you could kind of predict when that last show was. Will say that you are kind of right about lack of underwater viewing. The issue is that the ground is bedrock. You’d have to use tnt to blast it out, which is expensive, and potentially threatens the structure of the 30 year old exhibits. I honestly doubt I’ll ever see UV at SWSA, and thus must see a whale slide out to be weighed several times a day, every time I want to see them. Which is a shame. I’d hope to see a renewed focus on animals, and as an educator, I will take into account the repetition of facts. One thing thats curious to note is SWSA cancelled their educational sea lion show Sea Lions and Otters at Play a few years ago. If the focus is toward education, why remove the educational sea lion show?

Thanks for your comment! Viva in many ways is the forgotten show of SeaWorld's history with Azul taking the spotlight for the San Antonio park. Viva certainly could have played a role in the creation of Blue Horizons. Interestingly, SeaWorld's VP of Entertainment said, "We've never done anything like this before", (in regards to the creation of Blue Horizons) despite Viva taking place in San Antonio. It would seem however that Blue Horizons certainly guided SeaWorld’s direction in the early 2000s. Blue Horizons was definitely an inspiration for other zoos and aquariums. It's very likely that Georgia Aquarium was following SeaWorld's lead when they created their own theatrical dolphin show in 2011. While it could be argued that people could assume when One Ocean’s final day would be in San Antonio, it’s still problematic that SeaWorld did not release any details regarding the exact date, whether through social media or on their website. It would be safe to believe that SeaWorld would have treated the San Antonio and Orlando parks the same as San Diego, and released information about the final show and held a proper send-off. Instead, the route SeaWorld chose to take did not provide guests the transparency to know the end date or give advanced notice so that potential guests could make travel arrangements. The lack of underwater viewing areas in San Antonio is no problem. The problem lies in the fact that SeaWorld San Antonio doesn’t have open stadium hours for viewing in place of an underwater viewing area or watching a show. It’s nice that SeaWorld San Antonio occasionally offer trainer talks, but it should be a staple for everyday visits to give guests more opportunities to see the animals. You certainly made a great point regarding Sea Lions and Otter at Play!

What an amazing video!! I actually am not a fan of any of the new shows at SWSA as that is my home park. Orlando and SA OE aren’t too bad a bit better then SD. That show literally puts me to sleep. I think the most frustrating thing is that Orlando and SA spend almost zero money in updates to the sets. It’s clear that the animals are no longer the focus of the the company. I’m glad honestly that they are adding all these rides and such but it shouldn’t take away the amount of investment into the animal exhibits. It just seems as since these are the last orcas, they are just waiting for them to die off.

I agree with everything, although educational presentations like Orca Encounter and Dolphin Days/Adventures are good for guests, it’s really the theatrical extravaganzas that inspire such as Believe and Blue Horizons, hopefully SeaWorld will one day make emotional masterpieces again! 😄

Not to be rude buddy, but if u think orca dolphins belong at Seaworld or any amusement park, then you're as transparent as you are narrow-minded. It's all a bunch of lies and deceit just so they can take your money! They DON'T give a rat's #%#* about animals, they DON'T have the purpose of wildlife conservation but entertainment and exploitation, and they ESPECIALLY DON'T educate guests anything other then the idea that it's ok to dominate and imprison animals!! In fact just yesterday, another orca dolphin died at Loro Parque park in Spain without ever knowing the ocean's waves and rhythms. Please DON'T buy a ticket! Good God. Believe was the BEST OF THE BEST! If dawn didn’t die believe would have for sure continued. One ocean kind of sucked, it was to get everyone’s focus off dawn. When dawn died so did believe. Orca encounter is a snooze fest! Everything they teach you at Dine With Orcas, Inside Look, even on the background underwater viewing is educational. Orca encounter hearing the same voice saying the same thing just isn’t authentic. I believe you can do theatrical AND do educational shows and let the the guests chose. It’s a crying shame that Seaworld crumbled under the pressure of blackfish and the extremist won, ending there breeding program is sad!! Having an insurance policy on these magnificent creatures is important. They ARE ambassadors for the ORCAS in the wild. Seaworld does so much for rehab and rehabilitation for wild life, they work in silence but I believe they should show people if they can. Seaworld needs to ask there guests who are paying to come there what THEY want not what activists want

I guess it's about striking a balance, you don't want your shows to be too theatrical because people will just see the animals as circus acts (and we all know how much animal rights types hate that lol), but if they are too educational there's that risk of boredom hearing the same facts over and over. In the end, those shows are there to get people into these animals.
