In this video, I explore how taking more risks is transforming my life in my 50s. Drawing from personal experiences, I share moments when I dared to step outside my comfort zone and the powerful lessons I learned from those decisions. I also break down a formula I developed to help me (and you?) understand better the process of risk-taking, which is instrumental to living a richer life.
I then dive into the challenges of droning (yes, droning!) and navigating French culture and the language, both of which have brought up in me high levels of fear and anxiety. But I’ve come to realize that without embracing these fears and discomforts and taking more chances, I simply cannot fully experience the freedom and fulfillment that I crave.
Join me as I explore why taking more risk is so crucial to living a fuller and freer life.

Haha, yes, all thanks to you! You were also a driving force in me opening up in front of the camera. You've been pushing me in that direction for a long time. I finally got it, how to loosen up and just speak, be my imperfect self. Which is perfect as it is. :) If I could just keep getting out of my way...

Love the new format..great work! You have a sparkle in your eyes in this video. Bravo. I completely get where you are coming from, as I am a lot like you. We moved from Washington State to France last year, to north eastern Brittany. Your move shows that you are, in fact, a brave soul, as the moving process, being an expat, and day to day life here is fraught with challenges (and so worth it). You don't have to see the whole path before you take your first step.

I've often found with a shift in perspective, when I look at something new as an experiement without an expectation of outcome... "lets see what happens" the experience is much more fun and I always expand my comfort zone. I prove I can do more than my scaredy brain wants me to believe. I also enjoyed the more relaxed approach to this video. Well done for stepping into the fear and ending up in a more joyous place.

Always love watching you and your family...I am not good at taking risks. Have always had jobs that were ruled by laws and regulations...very black and white. Now retired and residing alone I have felt like I wasn't living, just existing. I was in such a rut...have been seeing a therapist to deal with many issues over time. Some discussion re my taking a leap of faith to get out and meet people, join groups, get out and enjoy life essentially. Have never really traveled and a friend basically told me to go somewhere so...I booked a flight to go across the country to visit a friend of 62 years who resides in Boston. It felt great to book the flight and on some days I am excited and on others my anxiety of traveling alone gets the better of me. I am my own worst enemy but will keep trying to put one foot in front of the other to get myself through the excitement versus anxiety to finally enjoy a trip. I feel like you with your drone and your trips to the coffee shops. I just have to do it for myself...so I will prepare myself for one week in Boston. Thank you for somewhat helping me light the fire under my bottom to get me to step out side my confort zone!! Wish me luck!!

In answering your question: The biggest risk I have ever taken was leaving behind South Africa, my motherland, a career in banking and aviation, our home, family, friends and everything I ever knew. We moved to Europe (3years in Belgium and now a year in France) with only 6 suitcases....its a long story😅😅 but what a journey! Wow, that's really a story. Would love to hear more. I moved from one province to another, and can say the same. Even though I stayed in the same country, it may as well have been across the world. I had one suitcase, and I mistakenly thought Canada was the same all over. It certainly is not. Climate, culture, history, economy...all are varied from one province to another, and come with its own challenges and hurdles.

I have never been able to sit in that place of fear, so I often leap. Which is what I did seven years ago when I moved to Mexico. I had met a Mexican guy and after six months of back and forth, went for it. I knew some Spanish, his English was better, and then three years later we broke up, and that's when the fear that you are talking about rose up, because I had allowed him to manage the things that were easier when you were fluent. Thank goodness for my therapist, who doesn't just try to alleviate the pain, but actually dig down into the bedrock through various approaches. What I've come away with is, whatever happens, I can find the solution, wherever I go I am home. The part I still work on, and it sounds like you might too, is the idea if something goes wrong, it's your fault because you lost control/missed something/weren't aware; I continue with, it's a mistake, we may be responsible, but we still make mistakes. Love watching you and your family because of the depth of inquiry, thanks for that!

Great video! I love your channel et Cecilia's. It is so nice to hear perspectives from people of my own age! And I totally relate to your "social" challenges. Once I am out, all is good. But it is the step to go out that is really tough. And I am rarely disappointed in taking that leap (but I have to admit I am always glad to come back to the nest 😂). I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the "years wasted" with our fears, our anxiety. I am 51 and I look back and I feel I have wasted so much time (even though I know it was my path) and it makes me so sad. I snap out of it quickly and move on but once in a while, it gets to me. Does that happen to you? And as an idea for your channel, try to find other KZbinrs our age and share their wisdom with us 😂!!! Thanks for your great work. Bonne chance avec ton français. This was wonderful!! You seemed more human, sorta like me instead of a 'pro KZbinr' who knows how to do everything, making me seem like a bumbling idiot for even wanting to try taping myself some days. I don't have any issues talking with people only because I know the vast majority of people are nice and will try to be helpful, especially for someone asking what there is to do in the area. But I'm weird because I love routine. I can occasionally go off-script but it's always nice to get back to just doing me and what I do on an everyday basis. Luckily my hubby is the same way, we're boring and we love it! But I sure do like to see someone else trying new things - hence the reason I subscribe to your and Nathaniel's channels. The pure joy you two are able to put into a video is an awesome thing to behold. It must run in the family!!

I'm very happy with the content of this video! Right after you posted the "I no longer want or need friends" video KZbin started sending me more of the same content -- people in their 50's and 60's saying that they no longer have friends & they say they're happy about it. It's tempting to say that. It's even easier to feel that way when you have a spouse and children. But it "protects" us from so much that life has to offer. After the pandemic so many people I know don't feel as engaged in life, myself included. I have to force myself to dress up and go places. I'm so happy your therapist pushed you out the door 😂. I am 43 and been feeling stuck. I also moved (not France) but a place that I didnt think would be difficult to adjust but 2.5 years later and I am still struggling and resorted to feeling "stuck". I started seeing a therapist 2 months ago because of a sudden heart wrenching event and to process grief. But through it old stuff is coming out and strugglig to process. I want to fix it right away but i cant. Videos like this (its not a bad thing) always shows snippet of the journey and when the person has reached the other side giving the viewer inspiration. But what it doesnt show is the months or years it can take to get to the other side. Or the journey in itself is the other side - the fact that we even decided to take the journey. You gave some inspiration and thank you for a non-scripted version of you.

I can’t express the gratitude of these videos because I realize that I’m not alone. Many of us gen xer’s are having a hard time. We do feel alone, we are all trying to figure things out and work through things. I moved back to my home country, Panama, because I lost my home over a year ago in the states. LOVE this new approach! Definitely less ‘in the box’. The integrity of your stunning visuals is still intact. You always leave me wanting to see more, but then so very grateful for what you are sharing and for the quality. Funny how deliberate and structured your stepping outside of your comfort is. Hearing/seeing what you have started to do brings me to realize that I have been doing (loads less intentionally!) the same in order to pull myself out of a ‘lowest common denominator’ style of rut. 35yrs ago I ski raced in an amateur club. So I decided it was time to learn how to snowboard. All on my own, at 67. Well… I fell…. A lot!!! 🤣 lesson learned. Now, on the regular, my greatest joy is playing in ensembles where in rehearsals, I have no idea which of my 3 instruments I will be asked to play! Just ‘put me in coach’ is my personal moto! No complaints! Just DO it! … and I’ve improved my playing, & reading tremendously! I traveled alone to Italy, and was a student in Venice for 2 weeks for music that i didn’t particularly like. Had to use my dusty 40yr old college level Italian language skills. …. And I THRIVED! Now I want to know why Finland is the happiest country and if it is possible for that happiness to transfer to a solo traveler!!! Let the adventures begin….and continue!! Wishing you the best with your French! Practice improves EVERYTHING!!

So much of this resonates with me. My wife and I, in our 50's, recently relocated to the Algarve for part of each year. She is absolutely fearless in encountering Portuguese people and language, which allows me to hover on the sidelines and let her have the challenging conversations. I need to do exactly what you're doing - get out there on my own, have my own interactions, and bring my experience of this fantastic place to a different level. Challenging myself to speak more will add confidence in so many ways beyond the nuts and bolts of learning the language. Loved the script-free format!

I really like your formula. It resonates. For me the key is to get to the heart of what I really, really want and to make absolute sure that whatever I'm pursuing is truly for me. In the past, I've gone for things that were more about the status quo (job, house, etc.) and less about my hearts desire. Now I make sure that the thing I want is what I want. I also give myself permission to pivot if I get into it and realize it's not for me. I too struggle with getting out into the world. Lots to unpack there. I might just try the coffee shop challenge. Low stakes way to be in the world. Thanks for sharing with us all. Best to you.

Yes, passion will carry you far. If you can focus on what you love, that's an amazing driver. Thanks for pointing that out. And yeah, funny how the coffee shop challenge is low stakes for you. As I describe, not for me! Fascinating how that works. What are some areas that have been challenging for you? Really appreciate your support. 🙏😁
@mylittleocchio
@mylittleocchio Ай бұрын
The coffee shop challenge is only low stakes in that it’s not cost prohibitive for me and I can easily bail if I need to. Very high stakes in being amongst the people because I have lots of social anxiety. Really want to manifest friendships with people who are on the same wavelength. Slowly learning how. Meaningful work is another area that is challenging for me. Trying to find a way to contribute without being overwhelmed.

Hi, I have never commented on your channel before….but here goes. I am a single female in my late 50’s who took a leap of faith six years ago moving permanently to the Auvergne, (France) leaving Scotland, my friends & family behind. I had had enough of “conforming” & needed to prove to myself that I could go it alone & live in another country. I was relatively comfortable speaking French ( I would NOT have made the commitment had I not had some grasp of the language) Life has had its challenges but I have never once regretted my decision. My dogs have opened new horizons for me. Thanks to them, on my dog walks I have made new friends ( French, Dutch & British) I have also had work carried out by French locals which has in turn only served to enhance my experience here. Like your wife, I am not at all comfortable with driving around French cities….but the life I lead now is way more fulfilling on account of the new friendships I have made, the lifestyle & what I have managed to achieve over the past few years. Long may it continue……🤞😬

I couldn't place what it was until you explained it, but wow, this video was simply that much more incredible! I agree with so many of the comments that have been posted, but I think the main thing is that you are a natural storyteller, who draws the audience IN. Your voice, cadence, natural pauses, etc made it not only easy to listen to you, but thoroughly enjoyable. I love this format - hope you keep it up! Also, your equation - brilliant!!!

Much better! You appeared much more approachable and kinder than in your previous vids. Fear and anxiousness can make a person very rigid, stiff, and maybe even cold. The film maker in you probably wants to work on a script, scenes, structure etc. But here you want to share your life and life is the opposite of a script. As I’m working on the preparation of a KZbin channel these are some of the things I’m working on. It’s important to continue to just enjoy it all.

I found this very helpful. I love the parts you broke down involved in risk taking. My husband and I moved to Portugal 3 years ago. We are now preparing to move about 30 minutes north to a new city - where we won’t know anyone and there are far fewer expats. I find myself living with a low level anxiety daily. And that’s not how I want to live my life! I’m also an artist - and I want to create my own style and sell my work internationally. I think I need a therapist! 😉

First thing, thank you for the exquisite choice of music! And congrats on your spontaneity, you did really well without a script! I can relate a lot to having this inner fear that many times blocks me. I used to be more fearless when I was younger. I'm more cautious now. I'd like to think it's my life experience teaching me that it's not always a good thing to jump with my head forward into everything that crosses my mind or my heart. Adjusting to a new culture is difficult and it takes time. It's funny how much we are stuck in our ways of doing things and how difficult it can be to unlearn and relearn other ways of doing things. As always, you've given me a lot of food for thought.

First of all, you did it, you made the vlog to the end and just au natural and it was fantastic!!!🎉 As an expat x2 round now and just hitting 60. Wow, do I look at what I've done ,what we've done, and I totally own it . What I'm trying to say from being quite shy is that I am so at ease within myself. I tend to observe people who perhaps have not moved forward or challenged themselves in whatever way. See frustration in some attention seeking in others,anger and bitterness, and total unnecessary output of negative energy. This is been 70% of the time, but then the other 30% of people are very happy with their lot, and their lot might be very different to what I might challenge myself with. I won't limit myself,I don't think anyone is happier or richer than me because nothing phases me , I'm proud of who I have grown to be and the challenges I set myself or have overcome. I wish I could help others feel that contentment if they feel they don't or I observe that they may have not found it, are they even looking for it or are they living the life that is expected of them? Thanks, I enjoyed your vlog because I have Bern where you are and felt the same feelings and now look back with a 'I'm proud of me lol 🎉

I’ve always put off driving out of town because of fears not knowing what would be around the bend waiting for me, literally. I had to know what was ahead before I took off driving. I picked my nephew up from college years ago; I wasn’t familiar enough the route so I was a nervous wreck driving back home. I was doing 20 miles less than speed limit! That’s how much fear crippled me until I drove to Chicago and ended up on the city’s highways and that wasn’t the plan! I did so well, I feel I can tackle NYC’s traffic!!!

Did it translate??!! Holy smokes, boy did it!! I REALLY enjoyed this video and I appreciate you for taking us on this emotional journey with you!! I can relate to SO MUCH of what you shared (the comfort zone and the need to play it safe more often than not). The main (and often missing) element, I think, is adding "play" into the mix! It's a magical aspect that simultaneously freed us and yet mysteriously protected us as children....and you proved (and reminded us adults) that it still can! I gotta tell ya, I follow Nate and your wife's channels, too, and they make me a little nervous and frustrated with their desire to push the envelope and try new things! Your son's most recent video - about his new house in the country - had me spent! LOL All I kept saying while watching it was, "Why are you making life more complicated for yourself??!" But he said something I simply can't argue with which was: Telling stories is his north star. Good for all of you for seeking expansion in your lives!! I relate to your journey most of all (especially when you said, "Let me just get it over with and get my therapist off my back!" Hahaha - kudos to the therapist for being persistent!
