Jazakhallah khayran ustaad for that explanation. One point that requires elaboration is the assumption that the word موتاكم in the hadith is referring to those dying and not the deceased. The general usage of the word is to refer to the deceased e.g. والموتى يبعثهم الله "and Allah will resurrect the dead" ayah in the Quran. With this in mind, what makes you say this hadith is referring to those dying and not the dead. بارك الله فيكم ونفعنا الله بكم وزادكم الله شرفا وعلما وهدى

If you are going to use the action of the salaf to strengthen the hadith, then you should use their understanding. Especially when the wording can have the meaning of the “dying” just the hadith لقنوا موتاكم لا إله إلا الله because obviously it does not mean that you tell the already dead person to say laa ilaha ila Allah.
