Using activated charcoal to whiten your teeth is the new craze! But does it actually whiten your teeth? What are the benefits of activated charcoal for teeth whitening? Are there any risks to using abrasive charcoal toothpaste? Dr. Nemeth answers these questions and more!
Dr. Nemeth thinks that if it whitens your teeth significantly it could possibly be very abrasive. No long term studies about what activated charcoal does in the mouth have been completed. It could cause the enamel on your teeth to erode away, and it is likely to cause notching, or thinning of the tooth.
It may also irritate the gums and cause the gum tissue to become red. Also if you have crowns, veneers, or fillings in your mouth you have to be very careful with ANY teeth whitening products.
The FDA spends lots of time clearing drugs and other toothpastes. This powder certainly hasn't been cleared to be used in the mouth in any way. We don't know the long term effects of #activatedcharcoal to #whitenteeth , so Dr. Nemeth advises that you be careful and use this teeth whitening technique sparingly!

@@aaliyahh_6515 that means you have sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth are caused by fluoride toothpaste and glycerin and sulfates propylene glycol and other chemicals inside of commercial toothpaste. You have to rid your teeth from those things to not have any sensitivity. Also activated charcoal detoxifies....your teeth are getting rid of toxins and bad bacteria. Your teeth aching is your bodies way of wanting more activated charcoal and minerals. Teeth are made of minerals...they need minerals like calcium phosphorus etc....

This is the first dentist on KZbin that is actually honest instead of telling you not to use anything except stuff you can only have done at the dentist office. Thank you! I've used the activated charcoal and it didn't work at all. I'm going to say this and I don't know if anyone will read this or not but I'm a teeth person. I'm absolutely obsessed with white beautiful teeth. I know some people are into eyes or other features but not me I judge a person's beauty on the way they take care of their teeth. I've always said that if a person is too lazy to take care of their teeth then they are probably lacking in all aspects of their appearance. I'm 45 and I smoke. My teeth really get yellow quickly because of it. The only over the counter products that have ever whitened my teeth are Crest white strips and this stuff I bought at rite aid that comes with a light. I've only ever seen it at rite aid but I forget the name of it. It worked even faster than crest white strips and it's cheaper and lasts longer.

i use charcoal regularly. You need some experience with this, so here is mine - i agree with the doc here that it is abrasive - likely very. what i recommend is brush with regular toothpaste, then floss, then combine AC (activated charcoal) with clove oil on different toothbrush - apply it to all teeth, but DO NOT scrub. Just let chemical action alone do it's cleaning/whitening/antibacterial for 3-5 min (watch TV..), then spit/rinse. i've had 3-5mm gum pockets for many years - requiring repeating deep dental cleaning, and 3-month checkups. Since i started using AC/oil, my pockets are 1-3mm and have white teeth with no stains, and the hygenist has to search hard for anything to clean. Doc says excellent hygene - keep it up, and come back in 6 months for cleaning (just in case..). I only do this AC/oil ~4X/week, at night. mouth feels very fresh in morning. never any bad breath. Yes, i do worry that even chemical action could erode enamel. i think this would be easy to test by long-term exposure on tooth that has fallen out - i will ask my neice if she has one (baby tooth) for that. I'm a mech engr. I practice/try many home remedies - some have helped me with various things, others not for my case.

I'm curious why clove oil? Is it possible that the benefits are from the oil rather than the charcoal?
@jimtebelskis3066
@jimtebelskis3066 5 жыл бұрын
clove oil is antibacterial and helps numb sensitive nerves. It has a burning sensation when using it - just use 3-4 drops. it tastes good - like cinnamon. i think i heard that Indian people use it for oral hygene (i'm guessing for when toothpaste is not available). i have a friend using it for purpose of deadening nerves and he says it's effective. i use the charcoal for whitening, but because it is so chemically agressive, i think it may help with hygene too - mouth feels chemically clean next morning - really refreshing. i expect the clove oil tie's-up some of the chemical reactivity of the charcoal, thereby reducing it's effectiveness slightly, but i'm getting such great results that it doesn't need to be improved (ie: by alternating instead of combining these). My only concern is whether the charcoal weakens enamel at all - i haven't started the test of long-term exposure on fallen out tooth (from someone else) yet. i asked my dentist to look carefully for anything bad, but he just says it looks great and to keep it up. For alternate oils, i only have limited experience with oregano and grapeseed extract oils. oregano is too strong-tasting to be tolerable, and grapeseed is probably too weak as antibacterial - i like a few drops of that one in my drinking water for nice citrus taste.
@jimtebelskis3066
@jimtebelskis3066 5 жыл бұрын
i don't think clove oil by itself will have any effect on whitening - it's only for bacterial and sensitivity reductions.

I’ve wondered why I’ve taken such good care of my teeth for the past 60 years and now have indentations near my gum lines. Aside from that, I have been using charcoal tooth tablets for the past 6 months and they haven’t had any direct negative impact so far. They contain Xylitol instead of fluoride, which is a major plus in my book. Ongoing usage will really be the test. Thank you for your informative video.

The issue you mentioned is not likely caused by activated charcoal. More likely there daily of using toothbrushes with bristles which aren’t soft enough, or just brushing too aggressively. There may also be other chemicals and even abrasives in the toothpaste you’ve been using, which might be responsible. That said, some degradation of dental health at age sixty may simply be the result of age, genetics, long term diet, etc.. It sounds like your teeth are actually quite healthy for your age though, and if it weren’t for the activated charcoal in your toothpaste, your teeth may have been in even worse shape by now. It’s actually ridiculous, based on this video of a doctor saying “we don’t know,” to then conclude that the activated charcoal in the toothpaste you’ve used for most of your life, must be the cause of some minor development at an advanced age. Ridiculous…

A message from carbon coco a teeth whitening company: The oil and polish are not abrasive at all and they basically just bind with stains and toxins through a process called adsorption and pulls the toxins away from your mouth and teeth. Also, the charcoal powder is very fine so it doesn't harm the enamel. The tooth polish also has bentonite clay that helps reminalise your teeth. Both have no harmful chemicals as well.

Activated charcoal isn't acidic, so it won't dissolve teeth. It's also relatively soft (1-2 on the Mohs scale of hardness, compared to a 5 for tooth enamel), so it won't abrade or scratch teeth during brushing. However, the grittiness of most activated charcoal can be irritating and damaging to gums.

You dentists are something else. People have been using activated charcoal to brush teeth long before crest and Colgate existed. It's completely safe. If you are experiencing pain when using it it is because the glycerin from your normal toothpaste is putting a wax coating on your teeth preventing them from being able to remineralize & heal from the damage been done from commercial dental products. Activated charcoal is not abrasive. It's a ultra fine powder & when mixed with water it dissolves. When mixed with water on your toothbrush it becomes a paste therefore isn't abrasive. Your normal toothpaste is way more abrasive than activated charcoal.

Dr. Nemeth, I requested, earlier today, that you revisit the charcoal toothpaste subject now, in 2020, BEFORE I finished this video. However, after watching the complete video & learning about the study stating that ALL toothpaste is abrasive, you made a great case against all toothpastes. I have periodontal disease but, my dentist/periodontist says I'm in a holding pattern from my excellent dental hygiene. HOWEVER, I am always yearning to expand my knowledge of my dental health & therefor my whole body health. The fact that you make these videos, truly makes me feel like you care about your patients & want them to have the knowledge to EMPOWER them to better dental & overall health. I'm so impressed & grateful for your videos. SINCERE THANKS!

thank you so so very much for an honest video on this subject. ive used it myself and the results are very minimal. i think that youtubers and instagram models ect are probably sponsered to do these vids, that or they naturally have white teeth and its a sort of placebo effect. the risks involved are just not worth it. i really thought it would be the answer to all my teethy prayers, but sadly not. that said, i think its ok to use maybe once or a maximum of twice per week, that way you get a little brighter teeth, without the risks of damaging them too much. i wish i lived in america to come and see you guys for my teeth, as you honest advice is so refreshing to see. it means your trust worthy and reputable! but i live in england so not able to book with you any time soon. Thanks for your clip, I have used the powder type that we would dip the toothbrush in. I brushed for 3min every day for 4 days and on the 4th day, I stopped because my gums were getting sensitive to sweets and ice-water to the point it would really hurt and I would have to have a glass of warm water and rinse my mouth (and still do). After about 3 months now my teeth still look nice and white :D and I love looking at them. My teeth are whiter then I have even seen them but it came at a cost. I still can't eat any chocolate with mint and caramel in it and very-cold-water still hurts however bottled water is Okay. After I used it to test on my self first I then shared with my partner what the product has done for and to me. My partner then tried it as well only brushing once a week for 3 weeks until a satisfactory whiteness was visible and then stopped. No pain and teeth look better. I would recommend once a week or once a month, slow and steady with the Charcoal & brushing as normal other times and don't try to go too crazy with wanting white teeth. Once your teeth look better ''then you would have expected to ever look'' that's when you stop brushing with Charcoal and just keep the Charcoal product around for if you want a shade whiter again later on. It's now been 6 months from last time I used it and my teeth still look good but still hurt as well. My partner's teeth look good and no pain. Take it from me - Slow and steady wins the race :)

+Joseph R Nemeth DDS & Associates: A question. To my knowledge tooth enamel doesn't grow back or restore itself once it has been damaged. Brushing my teeth with activated charcoal damages the enamel so whether I brush them daily or once a week... the only difference is that if I choose to brush them once a week It will take longer to damage the enamel. Just how much of my enamel will I remove every time i brush my teeth with activated charcoal? .5% 2% 5%?
