Great video as always! Are you doing a lot of hand calculations at your office or are you mostly calculate beams with specific calculating programs or are you using rule thumbs?
@BEngHielscher5 ай бұрын
Hand calculations when it’s really simple but for anything more involved I use software programs :)

Fantastic, Please how can I get the universal beam dimension and properties? Is there any website for it or another thing?
@kimLim-nt3xf4 ай бұрын
Hi what analysis software is mostly used in Australia ?
@BEngHielscher4 ай бұрын
I mostly use Spacegass, Strand7, Ram Connection, Structural Toolkit and Ram Concept. There is a bit of variance depending on where you work though :)

Do you have materials for euro code like the blue book? Let’s say Umm for concrete design?? 3:49
@BEngHielscher5 ай бұрын
The blue book can be downloaded for free from the steelconstruction.info website. There are other textbooks around that have quick reference tables for concrete design but nothing quite like the blue book

What is the difference between strhctural engineer and civil engineer? In my country they are same
@DrJQureshi3 ай бұрын
Structural engineering is a specialty within civil engineering. Structural engineers mainly design buildings and bridges. Other specialist civil engineers include geotechnical engineers, transportation engineers, quantity surveyors, construction project managers and hydraulic engineers, water resource engineers and environmental engineers.

No, structures in Australia need to be designed to conform with Australian standards

Very helpful video. Just wondering where in AS1170 you got your ULS and SLS combinations. Can’t find a few of them from 4.2,4.3 or table C1
@BEngHielscher5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Which particular combos?
@Ace-nh8kb5 ай бұрын
The SLS combo where you use long term factor 0.6 and times it by Q. Since it’s a floor beam for a house, I thought it might be under residential and domestic and be 0.4 instead. For ULS, the 1.2 SW + 1.2G + Wu has me confused as well, closest thing I can find from 4.2.2 is 1.2G + Wu + combination factor x Q. In order for the two to equal, the combination factor would need to equal 0 which doesn’t match up from table 4.1
@BEngHielscher5 ай бұрын
For the SLS combo, you’re right, 0.4 is the typical factor you would take for a residential house. 0.6 is a bit more conservative and covers other use types so that’s why I used it. If you wanted to really stick to the code and economise your design 0.4 can definitely be used. For the ULS combo, I really should have showed a + 0.4*Q on that load case. It doesn’t govern in this design but should be included in case it does in others. Thanks for bringing this up. Cheers !

Ah I see, thank you for getting back to me. Everyone has different engineering judgement/interpretation of the standards which is cool to see. Keep up the excellent work. Any concrete elements would be super helpful, like slabs or footings.
