I always thought this same approach should be done for archeology. Good recreations of ancient cultures are rare. I enjoy watching good attempts in movies even though they pay for less historic consultation that I would. There are Turkestani trinkets and baubles passed off as Anatolian jewelry in Troy and southeast Asian textiles passed off Babylonian and Bactrian in Alexander. Just sayin...

I agree, the strength of this series is that it did present the lives of dinosaurs in vary natural way like a documentary on them in the ecosystem. You rarely get dinosaur documentaries that focus on storytelling with science incorporated in it.

For it's time you have to give it credit for being incredibly up to date and even getting some things spot on. The use of scientifically informed speculation is something I'll always applaud because it helps to bring these animals to life and can help advance the field. If you then get it wrong that's just how it is in science but better to take a risk and fail than to not. Also of course back then we used to know way less about the behavior of these animals so you had to speculate to fill in the gaps.

Hiding Ceolophysis's feet behind the mud piles is such a mood. It just made me laugh because that's exactly how I used to draw dinosaurs, or literally any animal or character because I had so much trouble drawing feet, so it's amusing knowing an actual talented production company used the same trick, even if for a different reason.

It's great that someone on KZbin is finally doing this layout of an analysis, rather than just giving a blanket "not as accurate as it should be." I can't wait for the next few episodes! One thing that should have been brought up was Coelophysis' sleep schedule. The program only ever shows them in daytime, when the relative size of their scleral rings suggests they would have been more nocturnal. EDIT: I was completely wrong on that end. Coelophysis apparently had terrible night vision. Thanks to Cherry Jester for the correction.
@Cherrywick76
@Cherrywick76 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the analysis said that Coelophysis was a diurnal (daytime) animal, since they actually have poor night vision. They do have exceptional daytime vision though, having a similar eyesight as a hawk. WWD was right in that respect.

New blood is such a good episode. It takes places at the end of a mass extiction, yet it's feeling is not a "End of an Era" kind of mood. It is exciting, as throughout the episode, you can feel anticipation build up. "This is the begining of something grand!"
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 Жыл бұрын
New Blood takes place well before the End-Triassic Mass Extinction, and the downfall of the rauisuchians was absolutely nothing like what is depicted here (they were actually better-adapted for hot, arid climates than dinosaurs were, and said climates were something that happened during the height of the Late Triassic, not at the end of it).
@ThemagpieBird734

@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 7 ай бұрын
@@ThemagpieBird734 The important part is that they were better-suited for surviving harsh droughts than dinosaurs (meaning that the ENTIRE PLOT of New Blood should be the other way around). That’s why there were only smaller dinosaurs outside of high-latitude regions during the Triassic (when you take continental drift into account). The thing dinosaurs were better at was surviving very cold conditions, but this only became an advantage during the end-Triassic Mass Extinction when a worldwide volcanic winter set in; it didn’t give them an inherent advantage without said mass extinction.
@ThemagpieBird734
@ThemagpieBird734 7 ай бұрын
@@bkjeong4302 yes but how exactly? Did they use less water or were more energy efficient? The only way I think the dinosaurs could be hampered in arid environments was that some of them may have had feathers in the triassic period and even then modern desert birds and mammals still had filaments.

I've also loved this series since it came out, but I was 30 at the time...I bought the DVD set & still watch it regularly...the DVDs still play perfectly after all this time too! This is still the best CG dinosaurs outside of a major motion picture, inaccuracies or not. I noticed a lot of the behavior problems too, but still very much enjoy the series...There was one episode that was made after the main 6 called Allosaurus. That was actually the first one I bought & watched...you should cover all the episodes...

I love this show, still is one of the best prehistoric documentaries made and kick-started a boom in documentary's about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creature's, and I love how they should the animals as animals while also giving them a bit of character and showing pretty much everything that was known at the time. And of course everything else about it is amazing. Also I really like the someone drew comparisons of the original designs with more accurate one's, helped show how much more we know about these amazing animals.

I used to watch documentaries like this for nap time but I would hardly ever actually sleep because I was just so in love with dinosaurs. As a 6 year old kid, my parents had dozens of dinosaur documentaries recorded, along with The Land Before Time. I really wish I had followed my dreams and became a paleontologist instead of a nurse 😅

For me the greatest thing about WWD was how it enabled me to feel exactly what it would be like to stand among those creatures. The movie "Titanic" similarly was like experiencing the sinking in person. We do not know what the archaic animals of ancient times looked like, & there could have been much variation, so no quibble with the presentations in WWD.

I was reading through the book adaptation of this series a few weeks ago (as i hadn’t read it since i was about 6) and the points you made about the sexual dimorphism and (i think) cannibalism in coelophysis where mentioned there, so i assume they knew about them but didn’t want to include them maybe? Or just didn’t realise at the time...

The first one was probably done to save on cgi models. The second was probably a conscious decision, to show the animals as part of an aggressive environment and portray the mechanisms of survival.

When I was about 5 years old, I saw this documentary on Netflix, it was about this Allosaurs walking around in a museum, and that moment proved to me, that this was want I want to have in my life. The Balled of Big Al was the first time I saw a realistic dinosaur, I saw that doc about a hundred time, enough to the point were my parents didn't like to watch it anymore. This series helped me understand a lot about these animals, and everything else I saw on dinosaurs was only furthering this, so to the creators of Walking With Dinosaurs, thank, from me and everyone else that you helped to inspire. I might not have been around to watch the show, but the impact it had on me in 2012 was amazing. Thank you WWD, you are the best.

Hey guys, love your work, thank you. My little boy who’s 4.5 years old loves this channel. He got me on to this fascinating subject. I was wondering if you could do some sort of video that explains the dinosaurs types. My little boy said a triceratops was a ceratopsian, diplodocus a sauropod and that there was lots of tyrannosaurs. Could you guys make a some sort of video that’s like a dinosaur vid for noobs and dads lol. Thank you guys, your work is phenomenal :)

Lol I watched this series so much as a kid that when we had a class project on dinosaurs in P2(making me about 6) the teacher would actually refer to me for answers about dinosaur names and whatnot, we watched the videos as part of the project but I'd probably watched every episode 20 times already. It feels like there's just been nothing like it since, it's both thrilling and educational(even if outdated) it's such a good way to relay information, you're not just sitting getting bored at them endlessly droning out details, you're roped in to the little story of whatever dinos are being focused on while you absorb everything else.

I love all of t he "Walking With" series and I've love to get a more scientifically accurate remake with up to date science and modern special effects. In my opinion Walking With Cavemen looks the worst, specially the australopithecines and Homo habilis which look terrible and fake. Walking With Monsters on the other hand looks the best since it is the most recent one but it still needs a remake because the Paleozoic is super underrated and under explored in popular culture with compared to the Mesozoic and because of that there's still many misconceptions about life at the time. For instance, referring to synapsids as "mammal-like reptiles" which is totally wrong and "proto-mammal" would be a way more accurate definition. And making therapsids look like reptiles when they looked more like mammals (or at least looked more like a mammal than a reptile). Walking With Beasts is the best in terms of scientific accuracy (even though it's not perfect, but not as bad as the others).

What I think is the best thing about the series even if it has some inaccuracies here and there, is that it manage to portray these creatures as animals and realistically make them behave as creatures with soul and not as hunting machines like later Documentaries show dinosaurs like. For example, the 2008 Jurassic Fight Club (even thought the show is in completely different time periods) that says repeatedly that these creatures are blood thirsty and violence.

My grandfather taped each of these episodes and the spinoffs for us when they aired when my brothers and I were kids. Over the following years we would watch them so much we wore through and destroyed the VHS tape. My favorite though was the "Walking with Cavemen" series followed by "Walking with Beasts". I was always far more partial to our own evolution and the more recent evolution of other mammals. I'm excited to see the reviews of the other episodes and hope that eventually you are able to cover much of the series', if not all of their episodes.
