I always thought this same approach should be done for archeology. Good recreations of ancient cultures are rare. I enjoy watching good attempts in movies even though they pay for less historic consultation that I would. There are Turkestani trinkets and baubles passed off as Anatolian jewelry in Troy and southeast Asian textiles passed off Babylonian and Bactrian in Alexander. Just sayin...

The Scarlet One To be honest, anything can be considered monsters because of our strong perception of fear. I don’t see what the problem is portraying animals as monsters for the sake of entertainment. At the same time, are we just going to treat animals like dolphins as kind-hearted and purely benevolent when they are perhaps one of the most cleverly sadistic animals known currently? That is more psychopathic and monstrous than animalistic. I’m not kidding, there’s reports of Dolphins killing innocent people, and they do it coordinately. When you think about it, when do we really draw the line between animal and monster?

For it's time you have to give it credit for being incredibly up to date and even getting some things spot on. The use of scientifically informed speculation is something I'll always applaud because it helps to bring these animals to life and can help advance the field. If you then get it wrong that's just how it is in science but better to take a risk and fail than to not. Also of course back then we used to know way less about the behavior of these animals so you had to speculate to fill in the gaps.

Hiding Ceolophysis's feet behind the mud piles is such a mood. It's great that someone on KZbin is finally doing this layout of an analysis, rather than just giving a blanket "not as accurate as it should be." I can't wait for the next few episodes! One thing that should have been brought up was Coelophysis' sleep schedule. The program only ever shows them in daytime, when the relative size of their scleral rings suggests they would have been more nocturnal. EDIT: I was completely wrong on that end. Coelophysis apparently had terrible night vision. Thanks to Cherry Jester for the correction.
@Cherrywick762 жыл бұрын
Actually, the analysis said that Coelophysis was a diurnal (daytime) animal, since they actually have poor night vision. They do have exceptional daytime vision though, having a similar eyesight as a hawk. WWD was right in that respect.

@@bkjeong4302 how are rausuchians “better adapted” than Triassic dinosaurs? The only way I could think of is size and power.
@bkjeong430211 ай бұрын
@@ThemagpieBird734 The important part is that they were better-suited for surviving harsh droughts than dinosaurs (meaning that the ENTIRE PLOT of New Blood should be the other way around). That’s why there were only smaller dinosaurs outside of high-latitude regions during the Triassic (when you take continental drift into account). The thing dinosaurs were better at was surviving very cold conditions, but this only became an advantage during the end-Triassic Mass Extinction when a worldwide volcanic winter set in; it didn’t give them an inherent advantage without said mass extinction.
@ThemagpieBird73411 ай бұрын
@@bkjeong4302 yes but how exactly? Did they use less water or were more energy efficient? The only way I think the dinosaurs could be hampered in arid environments was that some of them may have had feathers in the triassic period and even then modern desert birds and mammals still had filaments.

I love this show, still is one of the best prehistoric documentaries made and kick-started a boom in documentary's about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creature's, and I love how they should the animals as animals while also giving them a bit of character and showing pretty much everything that was known at the time. And of course everything else about it is amazing. Also I really like the someone drew comparisons of the original designs with more accurate one's, helped show how much more we know about these amazing animals.

I absolutely loved this documentary as a kid and would love for you to do the whole series. My only issue with the series is that I'm Norwegian, and as a kid, I watched a Norwegian dub. It was a great dub, but the issue is that I can't find it anywhere. So now when I watch it in English it just feels off and puts me out of the experience. But I still love it and I have a lot of fond memories of it.

Ben, I love that you made this video. The walking with collection was a big influence in my childhood and to this day in my opinion is the best Prehistory documentary ever made, despite some scientific facts being outdated. The animation was revolutionary at the time, and every detail so well done I can’t say how many times I’ve rewatched the show. I hope that you continue to make videos like this one because it allows for me to rewatch the series with an excitement I have not had for the series in a long time. I look forward to seeing what you make next. Once again thank you for the great video!

I've also loved this series since it came out, but I was 30 at the time...I bought the DVD set & still watch it regularly...the DVDs still play perfectly after all this time too! This is still the best CG dinosaurs outside of a major motion picture, inaccuracies or not. I noticed a lot of the behavior problems too, but still very much enjoy the series...There was one episode that was made after the main 6 called Allosaurus. That was actually the first one I bought & watched...you should cover all the episodes...

Amazing video Ben G Thomas! I love Walking With Dinosaurs so mucht too! And it brings me so much joy you talk about these series with so much respect. Not breaking it down for the errors, but building on them. I would love to see the other episodes too. Keep up the amazing work and many greetings from Belgium! :)

My wife and I went to the Petrified Forest in Arizona a couple months ago and definitely watched this episode of Walking With Dinosaurs a couple times in preparation :) The Placerias being nearly extinct is consistent with the lone Placerias site you mention. Also, a single pterosaur jaw has been found at Petrified Forest, which was reconstructed as a Peteinosaurus-like animal: www.nps.gov/pefo/learn/ornithodiran.htm I'm sure you already knew that, but I'm just throwing it in anyways. Thanks for the video and I look forward to watching the rest!

I was reading through the book adaptation of this series a few weeks ago (as i hadn’t read it since i was about 6) and the points you made about the sexual dimorphism and (i think) cannibalism in coelophysis where mentioned there, so i assume they knew about them but didn’t want to include them maybe? Or just didn’t realise at the time...

The first one was probably done to save on cgi models. The second was probably a conscious decision, to show the animals as part of an aggressive environment and portray the mechanisms of survival.

Please continue with the rest of the series if you aren't already. This was my favorite thing to watch when i was a kid and it's nostalgic as all hell to hear you go through everything scientifically and remember things that i had forgotten like how good the soundtrack is. it was also nice to know little facts about the production of the episode too. Thanks for this Ben.

I love all of t he "Walking With" series and I've love to get a more scientifically accurate remake with up to date science and modern special effects. In my opinion Walking With Cavemen looks the worst, specially the australopithecines and Homo habilis which look terrible and fake. Walking With Monsters on the other hand looks the best since it is the most recent one but it still needs a remake because the Paleozoic is super underrated and under explored in popular culture with compared to the Mesozoic and because of that there's still many misconceptions about life at the time. For instance, referring to synapsids as "mammal-like reptiles" which is totally wrong and "proto-mammal" would be a way more accurate definition. And making therapsids look like reptiles when they looked more like mammals (or at least looked more like a mammal than a reptile). Walking With Beasts is the best in terms of scientific accuracy (even though it's not perfect, but not as bad as the others).

The first episode of Walking With Beasts is terribly inaccurate. Ambulocetus being moved from Pakistan to Germany, and Gastornis is now believed to have been a herbivore.

Hey guys, love your work, thank you. My little boy who’s 4.5 years old loves this channel. He got me on to this fascinating subject. I was wondering if you could do some sort of video that explains the dinosaurs types. My little boy said a triceratops was a ceratopsian, diplodocus a sauropod and that there was lots of tyrannosaurs. Could you guys make a some sort of video that’s like a dinosaur vid for noobs and dads lol. Thank you guys, your work is phenomenal :)
