In terms of age, Raygun was not the oldest. AYUMI from Japan competed in this Olympics at the age of 41, and she performed powerfully and made it to the top 8. It took me several days to watch any video showing Rachael allegedly breakdance. I didn’t know that breakdancing had become an Olympic sport. I thought Rachael was part of some woke event that happened during the Olympics. When I finally watched her I was shocked. If she was 5 years old I would understand because a 5 year old is going to dance like a 5 year old. That would have been cute. But Rachael is 36 years old and has a background in dance. I honestly wonder if she can dance at all. She really seems to think that she is good. She made the decision to make a fool of herself at the Olympics. I’m willing to bet that there are good breakdancers in Australia. They probably don’t have the money to support their dancing. Maybe in the next Olympics Australia can raise money for the actual people who can breakdancers and let them represent their country with pride.

There's absolutely no way Rachel was better than that G-Clef girl. G-Clef was phenomenal, both in rhythm, style, and execution. I can't prove any rigging took place but my goodness, she was the actual worst one at the qualifiers. People can try to defend her and say she won fair and square at the qualifiers but you can't deny her at the Olympics. Her not scoring a single point tells me something may have been up. I genuinely believed at first "Rachel got the spot because Straya saw breaking being an Olympic sport as a joke and decided to take the piss out of everyone." But no, she got her position due to classism and nepotism. I wouldn't even call this woke bs, because it was a WOMEN'S category. What it was was her husband being on the selection panel and unfairly choosing her. That petition investigating how she got chosen needs to be reinstated bc wtaf. I'm a female hip-hop dancer in Australia. One of my friends is a great breakdancer- there's a massive community here- but she can't compete in a lot of competitions. Why? She's working paycheck to paycheck, never mind affording to fly out to other cities to get a chance to compete interstate. There are quite a few break-dancers like this, simply because breaking is a street-style whose original appeal was not to rich upper-class people, but people of lower socioeconomic standings who are creative and passionate for dance, and there's a larger community of breaking in that class. I know heaps of great breakers here, but they simply aren't rich enough to compete in competitions etc that would allow them to participate in the Olympics.

@@obryn Of course it's her fault; in what world would it not be her fault? RayGun had two options: Go to the qualifier, or not. After that, she was presented with another binary choice: go to the Olympics, or not. Nobody put a gun (ray, or otherwise) to her head and forced her to first attempt, then subsequently go, to the Olympics. She put herself in this position and the fact that anyone would call anything, 'Not her fault,' is baffling. The only area where I disagree with Ben Hart is at the end of the video; in my estimation, trying and failing is often worse than not trying at all. Why should she have ever wanted to go to the Olympics in the first place when she had to know that, compared to the competition there, she absolutely sucks? That's not to say she flatly sucks at breakdancing; she's definitely better than I am, for example. Of course, I'd never attempt to breakdance because, like RayGun, I am a rhythm-free Caucasian with almost zero fluidity of movement.
@AussieRail

Put simply, if you are a senior member of a "governing body" you should not be able to compete in the Olympics. A governiing body's role is to promote the sport and help improve those with talent to get them to Olympic level. If you or your organisation have any say in who qualifies and who doesnt, you need to be objective. We've all seen those competitions with rules to the effect that "Employees and their immediate familes are unable to enter". She manipulated the system to get herself a spot, and embarrassed a nation while doing it. As someone who "was there" in the 80's, Break Dancing isnt about "doing the worm" on the floor for 5 minutes. It started as a substitute for street fighting. Its all about "the burn" by showing off better moves than your opponent, and "dissing" them along the way (in a creative and fun way). I doubt she ever realised that basic concept of what it is all about. It seems like her understanding of it is "a form of interpretive dance". She failed! I lost all interest in "Paris 2024" after the Opening Ceremony. This is just another of many examples showing that the 2024 Olympic organisers (including the IOC) have completely forgotten what the Olympics are all about.

@@squ34ky Like how the selection was conducted. Here is the information that is correct, not the mis-information from the petition. The Oceania Olympic selection event (The QMS 2023 WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships) in October 2023 brought together the top Breakers, both Bgirls and Bboys. A panel of 9 international adjudicators, a head judge and a chairperson who oversaw the competition, using the same judging system at the Paris Games and trained to uphold the highest standards of impartiality. These judges are all highly respected in their respective communities and in the international Breaking scene. Ultimately, Rachael Gunn and Jeff Dunne emerged as the top performers in exactly the same process, securing their spots to represent Australia in Paris. Their selection was based solely on their performance in their battles on that day. Contrary to circulating misinformation, Dr. Gunn's husband, Raygun's coach, was not a member of the selection panel or judging committee. This would have constituted a conflict of interest, and the Olympics hold strict standards that would never have allowed this to pass. For transparency, the official lists of judges and officials for the Oceania Breaking Championships (OBC) are publicly available on the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) website.

I was under the Impression she had been breakdancing for at least 16 years considering one of the defences Australia’s Olympic team chief Anna Meares used was “In 2008, she was locked in a room crying being involved in a male dominated sport as the only woman, and it took great courage for her to continue on and fight for her opportunity to participate in a sport that she loved.”

You're wrong about it not being her fault and here's why... you admitted that if she performed like she did in the qualifiers she would have lost but nobody would have noticed. But she made a conscious decision to add moves and elements into breaking that aren't part of breaking. In fact they're not even dance moves at all. She chose that routine, and that's the reason she's receiving all the backlash. Nobody expects female Breakers to be world-class. But what she did was a mockery.

Geography has a lot to do with why Rachael was able to qualify. There are far better break dancers but Australia is a small country spread out over a large geographic area, and break dancing is a dance/sport where the best dancers are often from economically humble backgrounds that would preclude them from traveling. While she didn't cheat, the governing body that chose Rachael didn't do much if anything to reach out to or support better performers who might not even know breaking was to be in the Olympics. The way the "sport" structured its qualifying events self-selected amateurs who had the means to compete. Rachael, like a lot of academics, had some blinders on with respect to her own privilege despite writing an entire dissertation about other people's privilege. And I fully get that in previous years, plucky amateurs have captured the hearts of people rather than provoked rage. This might have been a case of people who would normally scoff at accusations of "cultural appropriation" recognizing that break-dancing elites are often not 35-year-old white academics. In any case, the backlash against Rachael did get a bit out of control but I hope the Olympics looks a little harder at the way qualifiers are set up to prevent this in the future.

What you're describing is why DEI exists. It's about outreach to communities that might not be able to showcase their talents as readily as more affluent talents. It's often mischaracterized as "preferential treatment" for those lesser known talents, when we can now see that sometimes , without DEI, the more affluent people rewarded are essentially self-preferred.
