@johnnyRandomadness9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Fu modern metal crap, that expression seems a bit biased and ignorant man, if this "modern metal crap" doesn't interest you, that's fine, but it could interest and mean more too somebody else. It sounded good, but the point wasn't that it doesn't sound good or cool to play, it's boring and expressionless, and if you don't learn how to write melody , you just won't develop a unique characteristic too yourself as a player.

I dont feel there is a right or wrong way to anything (except being out tune and fail on bends). Its just as bad to overuse bends and vibratos than not using them at all. You all look to much on these guys and you will all sound the same in the end :P

lol what about people who aren't guitar players but do listen to music? you've already cut yourself out of a big part of the "market" by limiting your audience to just guitar players, but then again that's your business and not mine. I actually enjoy listening to fast playing when it actually fits the part and doesn't sound like "I don't know what to play so I'll try and play all the available notes in two bars". Regarding my own skills no, I don't play fast yet tho I'm working on it cause I like it.

+Juan Carlos Suarez well this is badass guitar tips not drum tips or harmonica tips. Also who cares if you dont play guitar this isnt badass music listening tips
@juancarlossuarez74869 жыл бұрын
Mikey Gio i guess you tried to give a smart answer without even seeing the point i was making. And bad readers cant be good writers. The point is music you play (or anyone plays) is played for others. The purpose of the musician is to serve others good music. You might like it when you play fast. Other people (the people youre playing for) might get bored after the fourth bar of our 80notepersecond waffling. So actually you must be able to play that fast to "give a good service" sometimes, but its far more important to know how to serve the song (which is what the video guy actually points at in his tips) and when its time to shut the fuck up.
@sgim437 жыл бұрын
+Juan Carlos Suarez don't you just love the internet and how half the people like to make up their own interpretation rather than even remotely pay attention to what they're reading and what's being said? I just got off another site reading responses to feedback I left for a major company not accepting automatic payments when they have the capability, and everyone's responding things like "oh so it's their fault you're bad with money", "can't remember to pay", " financially irresponsible", etc etc when that had nothing to do with anything I was saying and are actually completely incorrect...

+Jaspertine Yeah in some styles you can bend slightly over the pitch you want or slightly lower. For example when playing the blues , you might want to bend your 7th to the 1st a little sharp if you want that kinda sound. It has it's time and place. But you definitely need to learn to play BY the rules before you go apeshit and break all the rules. Cheers!!

As a side note to this issue.. I don't think it's so bad when we can't pull off a great solo when improvising, being put on the spot is difficult and so there will be an element of 'meandering'. But when we actually sit down to compose, that's when it really counts. We can take the time to get it right.

That point on picking dynamics really intrigued me, especially when I thought the solo without picking dynamics sounded perfectly okay. Would you mind explaining a bit more? I really appreciate your touching on vibrato, as I notice many shredders have either poor (weak, non-existent, forceful or untimed) or unremarkable vibrato. The shredders (or technical players) who, to me, have good/great/deliberate vibrato are Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and riffguy (from KZbin). Non-shredders seem to pay more attention to their vibrato. Liking your work more and more - thank you for existing!
@BenHigginsOfficial9 жыл бұрын
+Mirza Sutresno Hi Mirza. Yes, you're right. The solo without it was fine. It's just to give an audible difference so people can hopefully hear it themselves :) If you only ever played by picking exactly the same then you will miss out on the opportunity to add some more interesting touches like pinch harmonics, rakes, staccato sounding notes etc.
@Razwithz9 жыл бұрын
+Mirza Sutresno Also called articulation is the opposite of good clean picking. It's everything you are not supposed to do when you are practicing, different picking strength, different picking angle, scratching noises, accidental harmonics, etc. The trick is to do it in purpose and once you have mastered perfect, constant, clean picking. If you manage to do that it will sound pretty good because it makes whatever you are playing to feel more alive and expressive.
@burnnlearn9 жыл бұрын
+Ražha Strel thank you for sharing the knowledge with me :-) although I've been playing for over 20 years, I've never taken formal lessons, save for the lessons and tabs in guitar mags (before KZbin existed) which I occasionally studied. Great playing and dug your lesson on vibrato, but as I've gotten older I see vibrato as more of an effect and I prefer not to have it 'on' all the time and when I do, I prefer it more subtle than most. I love the tension that some notes have the move in and just die out with sustain. I think I may be the only one though. I mean, I agree, no one should have vibrato off pitch or out of time, I just disagree that "no vibrato" is necessarily a bad thing.
@BenHigginsOfficial10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I think it should be a choice.. some notes do sound great left as they are and when you do use vibrato, it's really noticed.

i've been playing two years and I've really caught myself trying to find short cuts, and I've watched my creativity atrophy as a result. @BenHigginsOfficial9 жыл бұрын
Collin Glover Yeah it is tempting to look ahead and want to get to all the flash stuff but it will comes in time, if it's meant to be part of your sound. If there ever was a 'short cut' at all it would be honing into what most floats your boat as you will always make more progress by focusing on what you enjoy and what you're naturally good at.

Hey Ben,i have a problem bending notes because of my sweaty hands,as i tend to get really anxious on stage.Any tips for that?
@BenHigginsOfficial9 жыл бұрын
+Ovimpendingdoom I find that the thing that usually makes string bending more difficult, as in hard for the fingers to get "behind" the string is a compound radius neck like a Strat. Or heavy gauge strings. Aside from that, lacking finger strength would be the most common cause of struggling with bending. Sweating shouldn't prevent you bending properly, otherwise most of us would have that problem too!
@ovimpendingdoom86049 жыл бұрын
I've got a strat,that is not that comfy to play while standing,due to the shape of the neck and combining that with my anxiety i get sloppy while bending.Thank you for your reply,really appreciate it!

Ηοwever, seasoned players can play with the rhythm to great effect: Slash (master of that "behind-the-beat", laid back feel), Vinnie Moore and Marty Friedman (grooving in-between) and of course Jeff Beck. Marty also has a great short clip somewhere on YT in which he talks about choosing where and how to use vibrato. And although each player has a trademark vibrato, varying it according to a particular section's/tune's needs shows great control and phrasing awareness. But I get all your points and agree with them. Great video! :)

These are great ideas, and I agree with you; however, as others have said, you make even the examples of poor soloing sound good. Part of it is the great tone of your guitar and the endless sustain you have on tap. Maybe you have already done this in another video, but it would be interesting if you showed us your entire signal chain, from the string to the speaker, explaining why you have done everything in that chain and what each thing contributes to the sound.

while bending upto proper pitch , tension rises in the string and i fear it might break if i bend it more , this happens even in lighter string gauges , is it a guitar problem?
@BenHigginsOfficial9 жыл бұрын
+Darex257 More of a perception problem? What gauge strings do you use? Maybe if you're doing really large double whole tone bends it can often be the last bend you do on a really old, knackered string. But generally you should be able to bend away with abandon, unless you're using gauge 002 strings or something! :D
@Darex2579 жыл бұрын
I am using 0.009 to 0.046 (High to low) gauge strings on D standard tuning (One step down) on an Ibanez GRX40 , also once i removed and set the screws on the bridge , can that make a difference ? because my friends said you shouldnt have done that ! Thanks for replying.
@BenHigginsOfficial9 жыл бұрын
Darex257 9's should feel relatively comfortable to bend with and one should be able to bend quite wide intervals with confidence, especially if you've tuned down a whole tone which reduces the tension in the strings. Or did you tune down for that precise purpose, to make the bending feel easier? Also, some guitars at the cheaper end can make bending feel a lot harder than it needs to be. The nut might need lubricating and there may be rough edges where the strings pass through the bridge as well, so it's worth checking that out to avoid any nasty pings where the strings snag on any rough edges.

I think Tony Iommi is great for beginning guitar players because BS songs are pretty easy, fun, sound good, plus you learn to use pentatonic scales across the neck with some blues notes and harmonic minor thrown in as well. Plus, he has some good vibrato and trilling to emulate even though his solos can become really repetitive (across separate songs).

Man... the only two I didn't like was over-bending and twitchy vibrato. all the other ones sounded pretty good and are common in many professional bands. being a good musician isn't about perfection, its about having fun. just saying

1. If you rush a lot as fast as you can, that's a problem, but if you rush some a little, as long as you try hard not to, it'd be fine. 2. Poor pitch when bending strings would be bending the string way out of key and you don't know how to do it right. 3. Poor vibrato would be use the vibrato when the note out of tune. Also, going too fast or too slow isn't really the idea. 4. Absolutely 5. If you rarely practice or don't practice picking, then yes.
