Beniamino Gigli & Magda Olivero - La dolcissima effigie (1940 live)

From a live performance of Adriana Lecouvreur in Rome, 12 January 1940. Conducted by Nino Sanzogno.
Only a portion of Act 1 was recorded. This is the only clip I have come across but it is a nice example of Olivero's voice near the end of her 'first' career. The 49 year old Gigli is still in excellent voice.

The great soprano no more, she was the last link to the past. She had performed and worked with all those long gone, Conductors, composers, singers, directors alike. Like Callas, perhaps the timbre of the voice misunderstood by some but fortunately by most admired and loved. She really new how to make her heroines come to live and how to make them die! Superb! RIP

Thank you so much ! I am thrilled to hear Gigli singing this role , as well as the young Magda Oliviero . Does she have more vibrato here , that she ironed out in her second career . I did actually meet Gigli years ago , after concert in London .

This is a great performance. Oliviero had an unusual vibrato but her tone was supported like a rock ERGO no wobble. Callas sounded like she was dying from vibrations too often.
