Was taken by my father and grandmother to see and hear him on his final tour of the uk in I think 1954/5 in Bradford. I was a 12 or13 a young choir boy. I still cannot get over his breath control true bell canto. Gran had heard Caruso at the Met in New York in the 20’s .her comment was she had now listened two of the greatest voices in her life time and would not wish to live on the difference. Caruso for presence and power Gigli for control and sweetness..her words came back to me in the chapel in Laverno where Gigli was a choirboy we we were there on a holiday touring Italy in2005.
