Yeah, gotta appreciate Benimaru's way to send off people. He's celebrating your whole life with a bang, an enormous offering for your farewell. And the fact that you can actually hear the infernal saying "Arigatou" after he puts hid hand on Benimaru's shoulder shows how grateful they were.

I don't know if you noticed, but the first Infernal that 8th dealt with had a white cloak and there was a red cross in its room, meaning it was probably a White-Clad working under the Evangelist. Also, Benimaru's weapon is a Edo period Japanese matoi flag which was used by Firemen to indicate that a fire is happening. Also, festival of destroying homes is also a reference to the way respect was paid to the deceased since houses were only made out of wood then, it's a celebration of deceased's life. Some amazing writing in this episode. Interesting how Maki was super thin and weak before and built herself up to be this buff girl. Some super good writing in this anime.

Fun fact, the “destroy the whole town” reflects the old view that nothing in life is permanent and thus cannot be expected to be. Wooden houses would be destroyed by typhoons, fires were VERY common (and exploited in WW2 by the US before Nagasaki), and the culture basically had the mentality that nothing but castles were ever really permanent.

It was actually a reference to the practice of burning down the houses around a fire in the towns in old periods to contain the fire from spreading as the infrastructure was all wooden and shit. But yes that's a good catch as well

For all of you who've confused why Benimaru destroyed the town, it's because in Edo period when there's fire, people used to destroy the buildings around it to prevented the fire to spread. They use mop as a signal the others when and where the fire happened. Just learn it from another commenters.

eyo to further explain benimaru destroying the houses: yes they’re offerings in their culture but also since asakusa is basically traditional japan like in real life, they contain fires in the traditional way of destroying houses around them so that they don’t spread

The reason why they destroy houses while killing an infernal is because it was a tradition in the edo period that when a house was burning, they should destroy the houses around because they were all made from wood and it was meant to not be spread and get bigger. It was much easier to turn off the fire from debris than full houses. They are just keeping the tradition (also the matoi were a symbol of fire around to alert people, that's why they are using those big "mops").

The 7th is the only squad not affiliated to the church of the sun God, they're the only ones who do not follow those beliefs, which also explains why they do not use the traditional blue striped fire fighter coat. When extinguishing fires benimaru destroys the city as a sign of respect, letting them know that they where not only important to him, but that they gave him a worthy fight even if he could do it easily. As for the banner things the fire squad is a hikeshi squad, these were fire fighters in the Edo period, and I don't have enough information about the banners they're called matoi and were used to tell civilians and fire fighters where the fire was, he however used them as weapons, still pin pointing where the fire was tho.
