The book Barracoon, by Zora Neal Hurston is by an autobiography about Cudjo Lewis. He was on the last known slave ship to come into america and talks VERY EXPLICITLY how the Dahomey kingdom raided his village, kill the elders and enslaved him and marched them to the coast. And he talks about the Dahomey king. His story is wayyyyy more detailed than what they are talking about. They are leaving A LOT of stuff out

They are talking garbage. The 'resistance' in the first instance was not against Europeans, it was against black people in and around Dahomey / Benin who used European weapons to go inland to capture Africans who were not so well armed. These people from Benin / Dahomey were selling people into slavery into the 1880s. Their role was so deep that a President of Benin, Kerekou apologized to black Americans for their ghastly role in helping out the Europeans in the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

You often hear the “but Africans sold each other” argument as if that somehow makes what the Europeans did better. I never understood that. Also, it’s not something unique to Africans. I am certain that if history had turned out differently and Africans had arrived in Europe looking to buy slaves, then warring European countries would have sold out their enemies - English selling French, Spanish selling Portuguese, etc, etc. It’s sadly just human nature.

@MrJm323

No one has EVER presented the "but Africans sold each other argument" as a way of excusing European slavery. Rather, the point is made whenever the Left tries to claim that what Europeans (or Western civilization) did is somehow UNIQUELY evil or "what the Europeans did" was WORSE than anybody else. ...You failed to understand THAT? (Also, we can have no doubt that Europeans would have sold other Europeans into slavery. All we have to do is look at what the Greeks and Romans did, and also remember that the very word [in English] "slave" came from "Slav", because in the late Middle Ages, the hill people of present-day Yugoslavia were often captured and sold to Venetians and Genoese as well as Muslim traders as slaves.)

@@MrJm323 I have seen the Africans sold other Africans argument presented in that manner. Multiple times. As if somehow African tribes had some influence over the legislation governing enslaved people in Western civilizations. This has nothing to do with Left or Right. There was something UNIQUE about what occurred with enslaving practices during Western European expansion, and that was the church prohibited the enslavement of Christians. The church literally sanctioned the targeting of non-Christians. During colonial expansion, this would later shift from non-Christian to non-European through theological and philosophical justification, and as Europeans began emphasizing differences (religious, skin tone, ethnic, place of origin) it shifted further from non-European, to non-"White." "Black" Africans became primarily associated with the institution of Colonial Western European slavery through theological, philosophical, and legislative measures. Measures that enabled the enslavement of "black" Africans and their American descendants, who also happen to be descendants of "White" colonial Europeans..

In this case, the people you see on the screen are useful idiots, used to brainwash the public and promote a racist agenda to demonize white people. Baruch 4:6: - Ye were sold to the nations, not for your destruction: but because ye moved God to wrath, ye were delivered unto the enemies. Baruch 4:15: - For he hath brought a nation upon them from far, a shameless nation, and of a strange language, who neither reverenced old man, nor pitied child. Baruch 2:30-35: For I knew that they would not hear me, because it is a stiffnecked people: but in the land of their captivities they shall remember themselves. And shall know that I am the Lord their God: for I will give them an heart, and ears to hear: And they shall praise me in the land of their captivity, and think upon my name. And return from their stiff neck, and from their wicked deeds: for they shall remember the way of their fathers, which sinned before the Lord. And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and they shall be lords of it: and I will increase them, and they shall not be diminished. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God, and they shall be my people: and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the land that I have given them. Jubilees 1 :13-16- And I will hide My face from them, and I will deliver them into the hand of the Gentiles for captivity, and for a prey, and for devouring, and I will remove them from the midst of the land, and I will scatter them amongst the Gentiles. And they will forget all My Torah and all My commandments and all My judgments, and will go astray as to new months, and Shabbats, and festivals, and jubilees, and ordinances. And after this they will turn to Me from amongst the Gentiles with all their heart and with all their soul and with all their strength, and I will gather them from amongst all the Gentiles, and they will seek me, so that I shall be found of them, when they seek me with all their heart and with all their soul. And I will disclose to them abounding shalom with righteousness, and I will remove them the plant of uprightness, with all My heart and with all My soul, and they shall be for a blessing and not for a curse, and they shall be the head and not the tail. 2 Maccabees 1:24- 29: And the prayer was after this manner; O Lord, Lord God, Creator of all things, who art fearful and strong, and righteous, and merciful, and the only and gracious King, The only giver of all things, the only just, almighty, and everlasting, thou that deliverest Israel from all trouble, and didst choose the fathers, and sanctify them. Receive the sacrifice for thy whole people Israel, and preserve thine own portion, and sanctify it. Gather those together that are scattered from us, deliver them that serve among the heathen, look upon them that are despised and abhorred, and let the heathen know that thou art our God. Punish them that oppress us, and with pride do us wrong. Plant thy people again in thy holy place, as Moses hath spoken.

Folks need to be clear when discussing this that the women representatives here are from what was the Kingdom of Benin(aka Benin), part of modern day Nigeria, modern day descendants being the Bini, Esan and certain other peoples of Edo. Dressed here in traditional wear, note especially the coral beads which have royal, religious and customary significance. Benin Kingdom is not to be confused with modern day Benin Republic, also in West Africa (aka Benin). During slavery part of the Republic was known as the Kingdom of Dahomey; a major slave trading Kingdom. Typical of my people these honoraries are talking humbly though they are proud. The essence of what they are saying is that the Benin Kingdom had no strategic hand in the Atlantic slave trade, due to being inland, away from the coast and due to the strength and power of the Kingdom, via the rule of the Oba of Benin at that time. They fortified their Kingdom against attack; hear her references to the trenches surrounding their territory, aimed at disabling and trapping invading tribes/nations. (The most extensive found in Africa to date.) They treated Europeans as equals and did not fear them. As the lady explains only citizens who were an abomination to society; by way of their deeds, were handed over to slave traders as punishment. Folks, make sure you do your research and investigate; as to where slave trading was really taking place, how, who was involved and why.The Oba's Kingdom fought off and killed British subjugators successfully ,many times, until their kingdom's natural decline in the late 19th century. Hence the British could then send a reinforced expedition to sack and loot them succesfully in 1897. (See the Benin bronzes in the Britush museum for examples of what they took). Only from 1897 were they made subject to the British crown. Please be aware, there is no uniformity in Africa. Descendants who are serious about knowing their ancestry must stop tripping on the one storyline (kunta kinte is misinformative; relating to its African parts & relies on pulling heart strings). You say "they sold us, their own people for trinkets" (who are they? Were you their people?) Move away from what you've been sold and get into the complexity of Africa, that means learning about its complexity and sophistication. You've been sold a broad brush picture by those Europeans who have an agenda to apportion widespread blame, so as not to feel so guilty and responsible. Also Europeans have been mostly too lazy to care about accurately documenting on peoples whom they consider to be inferior by nature (reflected in their media and sciences). Further, they generally couldn't give much of a hoot about peoples they consider to be savages by default, peoples whom they consider to have no history; because of the absence of written records! Only valid data worth recording for them re: Africans, is for the purposes of helping them to exploit, manage, placate, manipulate, govern or confirm what they already believe about Africans better. Read! Read! Your books are your friends.

@@CW043 Not exactly... It was the same in the West. Many slaves were freed based on the benevolence of their masters. You don't use exceptions to explain the rule. Slaves in Benin Kingdom and some parts of Igbo were given marks on their faces and bodies. This served as a reminder that they were slaves and that's all that they would be. In fact, some scholars belief this is what ultimately lead to the "OSU" caste system that's prominent in IGBO society. Jaja was an IGBO slave that was Freed by a Bonny Trading House Chief. He was acculturated into the Ijaw tribe and given all full rights to live as a free citizen. Later due to disputes with other Trading Houses he had to leave and found his own town. To claim he naturally got free is absurd. And that wasn't much different from stories of slaves that later became free in the US, although they still faced discrimination in the South due to the color of their skin.

Yeah we did it. The bible even mentions it in Amos 2:6 and Nehemiah 5: 5-8. Hamites sold us and so did some Israelites. In some cases they were backed into a corner, but some were just wicked and/or greedy. Why are we surprised? We have scam artists, crooked politicians, etc. among us NOW who sell us out. We need to admit and repent from ALL our sins to be reunited with the Father and build our nation again.

It was do not so... One the biggest reason, why was possible Benin's country was a disance... Africans participating in the slavs trade was due the horses question. Arabs everywhere do prohibited horses in Africa "for the do not Arabs"... Then such African, who was a view for Arabs, like a person - "fully against the Africans" (so - he do not will give them the best something) has a chance to have horses (or - cammels or so one...)... But I do believe - Benin in the slavs trade, probably, it is a question of separate "shows about" only...

Will we continue to live in the " Past", or will we move forward.... In America we of African descent still are treated as second class citizens, yet many refuse to leave.. but on the other hand many refuse to forgive your African brothers for their mishaps. What is the worse of the " Two" evils? As far as I can see it Blacks in America would rather take mistreatment in America then seek out and know the truth. I myself have decided to let go of the past and embrace my 94% African culture.. 40% of it being Benin/Togo.. It's not as if America is doing any better by African Americans. We still live under the Constitution written during slavery, we still live under different laws, and many are aware and accept it. So get off your African brother and sisters back. There is no factual history to support the claim that INDIGENOUS Africans sold each other into slavery. To the contrary, primary sources prove that all aspects of the slave trade in Africa was between peoples of the Abrahamic religions, namely, Christians, Muslims and, to a far lesser degree, Jews. The Kingdom of Dahomey was founded long after indigenous Africans had lost their autonomous power to trade or profit from the slave trade. The Kingdom of Dahomey was founded after Europeans went to Africa and it was destroyed after Europeans ended the slave trade. The globe was divided into Western and Eastern hemispheres. The Spanish were given the West and the Portuguese the East. This means is that all lands, minerals and peoples within these two regions belong to Portugal and Spain. Why did the French, Dutch, English and Portuguese fight each other for the land?All aspects of the slave trade between West Africa and Brazil were controlled by mixed-breed (creole) Portuguese-Africans whose loyalty was more to Portugal than Africa.

@kizzy1369, I am open-minded, so when you wrote that there are plenty of evidences, I thought for a second that I would have to change my views on the topic. But I was disappointed to see that you don’t seem to understand the difference between hearsay, myth, legend, folklore, and historical facts. Take for example, you are a citizen of a country, but that doesn’t mean you are an expert on the history of your country. You have heard a lot and probably even taken some basic history lessons, but that doesn’t mean that things went down the way you were taught. The Kingdom of Benin was created in the 17th century and destroyed at the start of the 20th century. This means there was nothing called the Kingdom of Benin prior to the 17th century and it also means that the Kingdom lasted for only 300 years; for the sole purpose of the slave trade. The Kingdom of Benin was created at the same time the Portuguese, Danes, British, French, and Dutch began building slave forts at Ouidah(Whydah) in the 17th century. In the late 15th century, the Portuguese visited that area and inquired about slaves and were told by the King at Abomey that they did not sell their people, so the Portuguese found the area useless, until France, England, Holland and a few other European moved into the area in the 17th century. Not one of the forts built at Ouidah was built by Africans and Africans did not own any ship. There is not a single record of African merchants selling slaves at Ouidah. When in the 16th century the Christian Kingdom of Congo resisted the slave trade, the Portuguese joined with their pagan neighbors and declared war on the Kingdom. When a King at Benin protested the French, he too was deported to Martinique in the 1800s. Europeans destroyed every kingdom in Africa and the Americans when indigenous peoples disagreed with them. The creation of the Benin’s Kingdom and the rise of the slave trade in that region coincided with Europeans acquiring lands in the Caribbean and soon realize that there were not enough labor to work the lands, so having tried to get ‘workers’ from Europe and that didn’t work out, they turned to Africa.

@Lorie L Sorry, I don’t follow the comments, so I missed your comment for 2 years. I have done extensive research in the history of slavery from Roman Times all the way to modern slavery. Both Christians and Muslims have left us documents of their negative stereotypes of Africans and why their Abrahamic religions demanded of them to enslave Africans, so the idea that indigenous, pagan Africans were trading with the “People of the Book” is total nonsense. By the 15th century, most European countries who could afford it had a standing navy in the Mediterranean to emancipate their citizens from Muslim slavery in North Africa. Not a single European ship was stationed anywhere in pagan Africa. This means that prior to the 15th century, Europeans knew almost nothing about Sub-Saharan Africa and there is not a single record of black pagan Africans selling each other into slavery anywhere in Africa. This is all lies designed by Arab-muslims and European Christians to blame Africans for their crimes against humanity.

In fact they fought and resisted the Europeans and their imperial flag at the time clearly depicts and Benin Empire swordsman decapitating a British fighter in battle. The Benin Kingdom was the only kingdom/tribe that resisted and fought against European slavers/thieves/marauders/soldiers. These woman are mostly wrong in their accounts of historical facts and need to go back to theirs chiefs and historical fact keepers to seek factual information.
