Though in part this song is very much based on Clementine's personal experience of being bullied (something that also deeply traumatised me when growing up) - Benjamin also said this of the song; "I certainly am very fortunate that I am not experiencing what the people in Syria are experiencing, but I think it all comes down to one thing, and that is bullying. The Americans and the English, we bully people. In the song the reason why it's a phantom, is that we can't see the reason. Not seeing the reason, not seeing why we get bullied, is basically the phantom." ...Clementine is the only artist I can listen to right now, no living person even comes close. Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, Bowie, Lou Reed, Barbara (the French singer) - are all favourites of mine but all are dead. Benjamin keeps the spirit alive!

Clementine composed this song after reading the work of psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, who wrote about children who have experienced bullying in the home and at school. He related the experience of these kids with his own childhood. The "little city of Aleppo" symbolizes the place where bullies are encountered.

I know a lot of people find Nina Simone in Benjamin but Benjamin is a true spirit of his own. Both of them are so unique in their own way. His words are as if eternally intertwined with every single note he plays. Golden rays of sunshine but also dark as the depths of the ocean or galaxies never found. It's a voice so deep as the unconscious of oneself but so high and bright as an eternal star. The battles and the struggles are appearing in every raw moaning or in a minor chord. Well done, thank you for being such an inspiration, thank you for fighting and providing us with this special melodies.

Agree. I find it tiresome the way everyone has to divert attention away to another artist. Those comparisons have no natural end. How about let’s assume everybody is influenced by everyone, and then maybe we can be present for what is right now.

After watching over this several times over a couple of weeks, the song and the visuals continue to hit me like echos. Inferring this from the video, this song could partially be about the plight of the children of Syria, and their suffering. The part where the kids lay on top of the moon? Maybe that's meant to represent how far away the conflict in Syria feels to most people in Europe and the U.S. Even with the recent tragic terrorist attacks in Spain, Britain, France, Germany, California, Florida, the children who are dying in Syria remain out of sight, so far away that it's like they're on the moon. The song also seems to be about bullying, but the Syrian aspect resonates with me the most. Benjamin Clementine is a genius
