my favorite song from the lace! i especially love how his voice sounds in his high register which he didn't use very much in the cars (except in harmonies). the man could sing the phone book.

I believe the 80s sound peaked at the time of this release. After 1986, things began changing and a new sound for the early 90s was developing. REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and others were up and coming.
@April-pw5ub Жыл бұрын
From what I’ve read, he was offered the chance to record a solo album in 1984. It took him two years to release it because he wrote his own music but relied on his girlfriend to write the lyrics. She had no experience doing so, but for some reason he wouldn’t work with anyone but her. It took a long time to write the songs . I feel the album could have been a bigger success if he had also worked with professional writers. I think the delay made it lose momentum. 4

@@April-pw5ub Perhaps Ric Ocasek should have allowed and strongly encouraged Ben to develop his songwriting skills. It kind of seems Ric was keeping Ben down, and not willing to give up any of his control over The Cars, or the prior projects. I guess Ben could have gotten with David Foster and his connections, but then the result might have been another Survivor or 80s-ized Chicago-like album. Complete with Toto's rhythm section.

Does know anyone know why Ben called his album The Lace?
@April-pw5ub Жыл бұрын
I heard him answer on a radio interview posted on YT. It’s from the lyric “the lace that got away.” from the song titled “The Lace”. Funny, because for being the title track, it wasn’t released and I’ve never performed it when he went solo in the 1990’s. I get the impression neither he nor the record label liked it much.
