Even when he was older and not feeling well, he still had it. I only wish KZbin and social media was bigger when he passed away; we would have way more "modern" content from him. There are a few bad quality videos that exist, but not much from before he passed away.

@@dominicijavier1575 Errors or pitch and timing are errors. And the "first bend" I refer to means the first of the pair of phrases that are metrically parallel. He does fine on the second one. But I am pretty sure that hitting the first one flat was not his objective.

@Israel Ramirez - I agree completely! It’s too bad Ric kept walking in and out of the shots of Benjamin, fully blocking the camera *at least* twice! I don’t understand what was going on with him. Ric usually virtually planted himself stage left (on the right for the audience). What a time to choose to go rambling around on stage! Yet, a comment I saw recently said Benjamin and Ric each stepped back when the other was singing lead, to “share the spotlight.” I guess Ric didn’t get the memo.

I have to wonder if Ben's looks made Ric jealous. He hardly ever sang backup when Ben was singing lead either. I think Ben has the better voice and wish he sang most of the songs. So what if Ric wrote them, doesn't mean he needs to sing them. Jmo.
@kato64
@kato64 5 жыл бұрын
Jason Phelps - I their last interview before Orr’s passing, Ocasek said when working on the songs they’d normally both take a go at the vocals, and then decided who’d take on the lead vocals, but if he (Ocasek) knew the song “needed a good voice” Orr automatically did the lead vocals. I have to say I’ve always thought their voices sounded alike. But Ben Orr was the one who made the ladies weak at the knees.

@@kato64 Ric saying "if a song needs a good voice" still doesn't make any sense to me. What song wouldn't need a good voice? I really don't think he wanted Ben to sing a majority of them. Again, jmo.

Ocasek got most of the attention because of his quirky "new wave" look, but Orr was the true soul of this band.
@dvelilla
@dvelilla 3 жыл бұрын
Not true. Ocasek got most of the attention because he was the primary vocalist and wrote every song. To say Orr was the soul of the band diminishes the roles of the other members. Who are The Cars without Orr, with his subtle bass lines and dramatic, melodic, seductive vocals? Without Easton's concisely potent and memorable solos. Without Hawkes signature synth lines. And finally, who are The Cars without Robinson's infectious backbeats and rhythmic fills? They are but a shadow of the super group they became. But together they are the sum of their parts.

@@dvelilla eh Ric was not really the primary vocalist tbh. It’s more of a 50/50 split, and that’s generous. Orr sang the best songs objectively and statistically. Ric wrote the best songs, and also like basically every one of their songs.
@dvelilla
@dvelilla 3 жыл бұрын
@@randombotdude2083 Eh, you're mistaken tbh. They had 18 Top 100 songs. Of those 18 songs 13 made the Top 40. Of those 13 songs, 4 made the Top 10. Of the Top 10 songs, Ric sang 3 to Orr's 1. Of the Top 40 songs Ric sang 10 to Orr's 3 and of the 18 Top 100 songs Ric sang 13 to Orr's 5. That's 72% for Ric. Like I said, Ocasek was the primary singer. You cannot use the word 'objectively' when you claim Orr sang the best songs, as you obviously came to your conclusion without an open mind and without considering the facts rather than your personal feelings.
@randombotdude2083

@@dvelilla lmao my personal opinion aligns with Ric’s personal opinion, he literally said Ben was a better singer in an interview, which is true. What I’m trying to say is that Ben sang a lot of the better songs or best songs, I guess it wasn’t more, but Drive and Just What I needed, two of the cars top hits, were sung by Ben. It’s just a known fact that there’s no primary singer at all really, it’s all based on who thinks what. They’re both singers of the band, and now they’re both dead. Again, Ric’s words favored Ben’s singing skills over himself.

First concert I ever saw was The Cars in Philly at The Spectrum in August of 1979. I was 12 years old, and just about to go into Junior High School. My father took me to that concert because I listened to that first album 'non stop'. Fast forward 6 years later and Live Aid happens, and I'm 18 delivering pizzas in the Philly suburbs just before college. Live Aid was playing on my radio in my 1973 VW Beetle, and EVERY house that I delivered pizza to had Live Aid on their TV sets. I never missed a beat! It was a HOT day on many levels! Good times.
