Benjamin Tod, "Sorry for the Things," // GemsOnVHS™

Seems like any time Ashley goes on a trip back to South Dakota, Ben doesn't know what to do with himself. So we come over to talk music, life and songwriting. Maybe he plays a few songs, jump in the truck and we do donuts in the muddy Kentucky property. He thinks it's just the opportune time to record new things, I think we're actually babysitting him, keeping his head on straight, out of trouble.
Happy to do it, especially since Ben's new solo CD is coming out now. This is one song off that record, recorded in their RV that has been serving as their home for the last couple years, while they build the more impressive cabin near by. Funny thing is, I lived in this RV before them, and sold it to them when I moved. It's a pretty cozy 90s style camper and we packed in to hear Sorry for the Things.
Ben had this to say about the song,
"I wrote “Sorry For The Things” about ten years ago and it almost got lost in a haphazard pile of songs written on napkins and record sleeves. This song has been a running joke with me and my sound engineer Dan Emery because i recorded it for at least 5 different albums and it never made the final cut.
Ashley and I went a few of years getting by on less than $400 bucks a month living on the streets, in ratty vehicles, and off grid shanties. We played music on the streets, did migrant work and a few things that the statute of limitations forbids me to say. “Sorry For The Things” encapsulated those times and the hardships we lived through.
It’s shocking how long I continued drinking when I listen to it. It’s obvious that even back then I understood how badly my addictions were affecting my life, yet it would be almost a decade before I really tried to get sober. I am thankful for the grace she has for me still. I have not been an easy person to love."

After a fifth and a half of whisky my girl friend said I couldn't ride my Harley. Well in those days that was just like waving a red flag at the bull. Somehow I got the bike out of the garage and down to the street at full revs without dumping it. About five miles later she shows up and finds me on the side of the road with my leg pinned under the bike and the motor was hot by then. While my leg is burning all she says is I told you so! I told her eventually somebody is going to come along and get this bike off of me and you better not be here when they do. Mean and onery I was in those days. It took another five years of putting the bottle to my head and pulling the trigger to end it! The last three drunks came close to killing me! The last morning when I woke up I knew I would never be drunk again! And I haven't been drunk for 36 years now! Almost seems like another life now. Erwin the day will come down the road that you won't even want to get drunk. It will be the last thing on your mind!

I spent many nights drinking and listening to Ben's music and becoming an absolute wreck by the 2nd or 3rd song. Its almost as if I was compelled to gratify my sorrow by drowning the raucous voices bouncing around in my head with booze, and the cycle would just repeat. I'm happy that I can say it has been a year and a week since I finally let go, and though I was first acquainted with these songs while I was completely lost, they have beautiful new meanings to me. The last two songs have been very reminiscent of my own life. The caravan in this video also reminds me of the one I lived in on my granddads drive after fighting my mothers boyfriend who had told me that my grandfather was not blood. Something I was never meant to know. Benjamin's music really addresses issues that I think a lot of people who feel left behind in the world can relate to. Excited for the new album.

Music is so powerful. Art is powerful. As an artist, you have hundreds of hearts in your hands. I'm so happy to hear the lost dog say that he respects this responsibility. That's rare to hear. Don't know about yall, but I need a little hope and a lot of truth. The world is mean and nasty to a kind heart. Art that connects can bring peace to a troubled soul, and honest hope. Part of that hope for me is that one can live honestly, while being honest with oneself. But how come that honest living comes with such pain? My hope is that it doesn't have to, and I craft my life to reflect that hope now. And if you follow, that's what I hear when Ben sings. "I'm fighting off my demons but there not quite dead, with a single barreled shotgun and Johnny Walker Red but when the bottle is empty your the guns to my head and I regret" this hits home and so unbelievably hard I get emotional every time I hear it. I unfortunately can relate and interpret the single barreled shotgun as a metaphor for a rig for heroin and obviously Johnny Walker Red needs no explanation. Benjamin has always been open about his struggles with addiction and this part of the song and infact the whole song brings me to tears 9 out of 10 times I listen to it because I think back to a girl and a relationship that meant the world to me but unfortunately was based around drugs and getting high. So let the waterworks commence, because as I still am struggling even when I get clean she will still be in the back of my mind always, "The guns to my head" I guess you could say.😔😔

I’ve been on the brink of suicide after losing the girl I thought was my soulmate about 5 months ago. My situation was very relatable to the lyrics of this song. Listening to Ben’s music gives me some courage to keep going. Knowing that there’s other people out there who have experienced or can relate to the pain I’m currently feeling is encouraging enough for me to wake up to another day. Thanks for helping me fight through this and providing me with music that I can use to bleed out the pain when I really need to.
