Thailand had the most elegant gown. Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong dresses were interesting choices. Colombia needed a more elegant walk to pull the gown off.

Miss USA was easily the most beautiful. I think they just wanted an Asian winner no matter what. Not fair judging.

From what I saw in 1988, the judges had already made up their minds after the interview: Thailand, Korea, Mexico and Japan were definite ins. There seem to be a fight for the fifth spot between the Dominican Republic (scored high in interview), Hong Kong (scored high in gown) and Venezuela (scored high in swimsuit). Ultimately, Hong Kong's unique gown placed her in the top 5.

This is the comment I was looking for. Apparently USA, never received the memo that you should NEVER EVER wear the same gown twice, especially to compete in Miss Universe. I'm positive that the judges chosen to judge the Miss Universe pageant have seen the Miss USA pageant, and will remember the gown that the winner wore. P.S. - Notice that both Laura & Courtney, both wore the exact same gowns that they wore in the Miss USA pageant, and neither made it past the top 10. I wonder why?!

Miss Venezuela, llevo otro vestido para usa diseñado por Guy Meliet, que pesaba ocho kilos, pero como habia rebajado tnato para el Miss Universo, se le caia al ponerselo, le quedaba muy grande, y tuvo que ponerse el mismo que uso para el Miss Venezuela.

HOng Kong - Horrible Gown; Dominican Republic - Don't like the fringe on the gown and missing the charisma; Mexico - Lovely girl, don't like the gown; USA - Elegant; Japan - I have to agree, this gown made her look pregnant; Thailand - Classic beauty all around; Korea - A wedding gown with a long train and the big bow in back? No! Colombia - Too much cleavage and too flashy; Norway - Cold personality but nice gown; Venezuela - HOrrible Gown...those sleeves?? Yuck!
