I agree.. the 8S is a better bike.. top end horsepower figures are irrelevant.. low end power, better tyre sizes and much nicer styling on the Suzuki.

I am on my second bmw f800r... took a ktm 890 for a test, it was like riding a 600 supesport - bmw 800 will pull top gear down to 2000 rpm/30 mph, ktm needed 2nd gear coming out of a 30 zone. Edit, the gsx 8s power figures are similar my f800r

Buyers too, the MT-07 basically hasn't depreciated since new in 2015 due to the hype, whereas you can pick up a 2017 SV for half of what it sold for. Insane considering they're pretty much neck and neck as real world bikes with some upsides and some downsides to each.

If I was buying a 650cc Japanese naked bike today, I'd buy the SV650. Then throw the kitchen sink of aftermarket at it. I find it more charismatic and interesting than the MT-07.

Totally agree, tried several of the competitors and bought the GSX8S, feels better built than the Honda (wouldn’t have said that 20 years ago!). Remember seeing Simon on the front of PB flipping the bandit 1200, grew up with reading his reviews and he has always been spot on. GSX8S, I didn’t initially like the look, but in the flesh, yep it looks good. The engine is a Dreamy torque rich motor, I had a bandit 600 in 1996 and an SV650. It’s great to see Suzuki back in the game and hits the mark.

Great review & like the GSX8S, you saved the best 'til last. Most comprehensive review yet & I've seen them all. Your summary was very good too & conveyed the personality & feel of the bike nicely. Hoping to check one out before the end of the month with a potential purchase in mind this year if it looks & rides as well as it appears to. It seems to be the best all round package to me despite not excelling in any particular area, it's good in all of them. Also goes to show we shouldn't get too hung up on the spec sheet. Group test will be very interesting.

Thanks for the review. Compared to the rumble of the Honda Hornet exhaust, I hate the Suzuki exhaust sound which is so quiet. I really don't like the looks either. When comparing it with the MT 07 and the Honda Hornet, I didn't have to think for more than a few minutes before I purchased my Hornet. I also prefer more peak power higher up in the revs coz this is where the excitement comes from. It's also much more aggressive, more flickable, lighter, and a lot cheaper. Very happy with my choice. The Suzuki will have to work harder to win me over.

Suzuki haven't been winning the spec sheet battles for about 15 years so it's good to see some recognition of the tangible and intangible things that go into making a motorcycle "just right". Many journalists have sang praises to the light front end of recent bikes like the MT10 for example. When I rode it as a mere mortal I found it unsettling and way too flightly/twitchy. I like a reassuring planted feel and Suzuki are good at delivering that, even when some journalists deem that boring.

I think, Suzuki execom had considered putting the air intake to the front, but they chose not to for obvious reason, to avoid engine misbehaviour. For some, it much more expensive than both Japanese and European competitors (I can't blame them too), but if buy all aftermarket stuff at once, they become more expensive than the 8S. And the weight, I won't blame you too if you feel it, but the weight is well distributed.

I've had a gripe with Kawasaki for many years over their lackluster application of a middle displacement twin cylinder. That 649 buzz box they still make and put into everything (Vulcan S, Versys, Ninja, Z) was designed in 2006. Everyone complains Suzuki doesn't put out new powerplants, why don't they complain about Kawasaki? 180º parallel twins are one of the worst sounding and most vibration prone, next to a 360º parallel twin. Comon Kawasaki, surprise everyone and bring us a true 90º Vtwin in the 700cc range and update your lineup.

It's going to be interesting to see if Suzuki can pull this off. For a while now, they have been kind of the "affordable option". The V-Strom and the SV have been a fair slice cheaper than the competition. Now it looks like they've made the GSX-8S at least a bike that's better than the competition - but more expensive, too. But it also might have been something they couldn't avoid: I don't know if it's still the case, but at least a few years ago they were still building everything except the 125cc bikes in Japan. Kawasaki and Honda at least had moved even the 650 class to Thailand or something. I can only assume it's harder to get a margin on Japanese built bikes.

I reckon there's definitely something in sticking a fairing and clip-ons on this bike and having a decent sports tourer now that the V-Strom has moved to a 21" front wheel. At only £1k more than the SV650 this seems like a pretty good deal as it is, more wind protection would just boost its motorway capability etc.

I prefer the looks of this over the hornet as well. I would love to demo both personally before making final judgement. I'd likely consider the 890 duke over the GSXS8 however as well. (haven't rode that either but I have been on the SD1290 evo) Cheers from Canada! Good job

Really good review with valuable observations, thanks. Great comparisons with the Hornet which is what I wanted to hear. The Hornet has also got more tricksey electronics with more to adjust. The optional quick shifter accounts for Stg240 of the price difference. Nice to hear your conclusions and reasons.

I was all about getting the Hornet, but then I started reading about the 8S, and I started having doubts. Now this video has totally changed my mind. Yeah, it's more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and I'm prepared to pay the extra to get what the 8S has got.

It's definitely worth test-riding both bikes - there might be things you prefer about one or the other! And my thoughts aren't based on a back-to-back ride, so sometimes opinions can get distorted by weather, roads etc.

Pleased to hear the vibration is nil on this version of the 776 engine. Once again, who is on these Japanese planning committees in the last couple decades when they KEEP DOWNSIZING FUEL CAPACITY?! The 2nd gen SV650 had a 4.5 gallon tank for a very long time. That had the best range ever.

Smaller rear tire, worse chassis, no quick shifter. Uglier than sin... The power band of the GSX is actually much better up until peak, which with a tune would be identical if not even more powerful. Suzuki is known for gentle tunes. The GSXR gain 25hp from a derestriction. 5hp doesn't convince me of anything, and the slight added weight makes for much more stable riding at higher speeds/highways/windy days.

@@jordanjoestar8839 the Honda has a quick shifter that’s works really well. And the smaller rear tyre helps the bike turn faster. Test ride on the bike a couple of days ago then I ordered the Honda. I’m sure all the bikes are good it’s just personal preference. I’ve raced Suzuki motocross bikes in the past. I’ve had all the makes & it really just comes down to personal taste because 99% of road riders never take there bike to the limit or track it to see what it can do.

The Hornet is the same price as mt-07 and everyone seems to like the hornet more on every test so there is your answer. It seems that Hornet and S8 is the biggest rivals if you not going up to a z900 or mt09.

The wisest people know, if you talk more about the competitor in the review, people don't believe the word what you are saying in the actual product. They look at the competitor and find out it is cheaper, more powerful, lighter, bigger tank, lower fuel consumption... And it is a Honda.... People will buy that hornet in the ratio of 25:1 compared to this. Sadly, this might be a good bike, but Honda just nailed it with the new Hornet. It should be much, much pricier than what it is. Couple thousand more than 8S or 72hp Yamaha, with ancient tech and specs.

This bike against the Hornet is just the same as 2021 Trident vs the MT-07. One is a more "fun" "hooligan" bike with some quirks while the other is the more "sensible" bike and is considered to be "better". Even with that, the fun option doesn't lose its appeal and still sell by the bucket loads.

I found it easy to get 54mpg on a test ride and I bet if you did a steady 65-70 you'd get a lot more than that. Yes, must have been really thrashed by these guys as well as being at high altitude.

I'm not sure about the looks but that's just subjective. Things like mainstand are so important for basics on tour. And how much harder is it to plug a puncture without one, on the road? And does the toolkit allow me to adjust the chain and suspension? There's economical, and taking it too far. But it's not just Suzuki. Good review overall, though. Safe, happy travels 👍

I''ve just ridden the 8S and Hornet back to back. I was sceptical as to whether the 8S was worth £1000 more than the Hornet, but after riding them, I'm convinced the 8S is a better bike - smoother, more refined, roomier and with more usable torque. Plus a quicker shifter as standard. My only irritation was the optional USB socket at an extra £46 - FFS, Suzuki - just include one please!

In my opinion the 8S is the best naked from japan, but in my opinion the Trident can still win for the looks. And I'm such a noob and not yet a rider that I'd value looks more than performance. I'd use it for commuting so looks and ease will win my money.

They were thrashing the hell out of this on the launch so not a fair reflection of typical mpg for everyday riding. They also didn't get 68mpg out of the Hornet on it's launch either so only long term tests & owners feedback in time for both bikes will give an accurate picture. However I do think the Suzuki must be thirstier as 38 is pretty low & even with conservative speed limit riding everywhere, I doubt you'd get over 50mpg.

@@splodge5714 They closed the road although to be fair I doubt that negates the speed limit. However the point being if they closed the road, they were going for it. There's about 20 video reviews on You Tube showing it. One journo openly says (not in this vid) it gets a bit blowy over 100mph. Not condoning it, just illustrating that the general pace was high & encouraged by a closed road & a quick Suzuki France lead test rider. Not your average riding by any means. FYI Suzuki claim 67mpg which I will be the first to say I find hard to believe.

He specified that this 776 twin is very smooth, and not buzzing or tingling through the pegs or bars at higher rpm. Fours are almost always very smooth, with exceptions. Check out the D4A channel on KZbin for specific engine vibration and configuration talk. Also Fortnine did a recent video on preferred motorcycle engine layouts.

With barely more power, cheap plastics, really thin frame, narrow tire and looks that make your eyes burn, the Hornet is a parts bin special. This GSX-8S was much more well thought out with its full size rear tire, Stout frame and chassis, oem quick shifter and a bit more buttoned up and thought out looks. You can tell Suzuki really cared about this and took their time. The Hornet is just a buzzed up naked meant to fill a hole in their market share. Not as much love nor care was given by Honda, as it was Suzuki. Sure, it lacks in electronics and that's 100% why I have a GSXR 750 sitting in my garage, and not something fancier. I'm in control, not the bike. How I prefer.

@@jordanjoestar8839 There is a load of stuff you can get from Honda for the Hornet, but the QS is the only thing I'd bother with, and with it added there'd still be a big gap in price. Unfortunately for Suzuki a lot of people are going to look at the specs and see a heavier, less powerful and more expensive motorcycle, regardless of it potentially being the better bike.

I mean I guess people will be okay with that. So it must have a lot of capacity then, how much is there?" "14 liters!" "Oh boy..." A modern bike trait I really dislike is the tiny rear ends. I guess it's because people want them to look that way, but still, it's annoying that you can't strap on anything if you have a pillion. I love that my ZRX 1200 has a bit of a tail for some soft bags (I've gone two up touring without a rack, tents and all!), as does my GSX-R1100, or that my F650 has a proper metal plate with tie-down plates, and so on. In the GSX-8S they've apparently put the brake lights on the license plate holder, which is like the worst of both worlds: Now the people who want the tiny rear end will have to do even more modding, but those of us who'd like some space don't have any either.

Suzuki’s claimed economy figures, tested under World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC) conditions, are 56 mpg (US). With a 3.7-gallon tank that suggests a range of 207 miles is theoretically possible. Honda claims 54 mpg in the Hornet, giving a potential range of around 216 miles from the 4-gallon tank.

Like the gsx 8s, my bmw f800r has plenty of bottom end... ride like a granny and it will do 67mpg, hammering it you'll be hard pushed to get it down to 50mpg

It's too heavy. No LED indicators. No hugger. They changed the nice metallic blue to this ugly baby blue colour. No cruise control even as an option, which doesn't make any sense since it's ride-by-wire. Atleast it doesn't have the douchbag always on indicators, unlike Honda, which puts the riders' lives at risk in bright sunlight when people might think you're indicating and go in front of you. It also doesn't have the horn button in the wrong spot, unlike Honda

The thing that's never mentioned in these reviews is pillion provision. From what I can see, none of these are adequate for my wife who still comes with me on longish trips despite being nearly seventy, so that rules them all out.

There's never an opportunity to take an experienced pillion for a long ride on a launch. Occasionally we could take someone who works for the manufacturer, but you wouldn't get an unbiased report from them!
