this is what i like in an extra feature, the eclutch adds a feature without forcing you to have to use it. so many new features replace how things have worked for years, like the DCT. i see this being useful for those who have weaker hands, well done honda!

I’ve had a DCT gearbox car for the last four and half years, it’s phenomenal. It’s never gone wrong, it works on inclines etc and has three modes from yawn, to sprightly, to oh my god. I would love BMW to bring out DCT on my GS, purely because the quick shifter isn’t the sharpest tool in the box. As for e-clutch, you still have to clonk the gear lever with your toe. After 47 years I’m happy to move on

@PhilbyFavourites
@PhilbyFavourites 4 ай бұрын
@@mggarcia19I learnt over 45 years ago that wheelies never impressed women, much as they weren’t impressed by handbrake turns in a Capri. On the positive side the unintentional wheelie I pulled on my FS-1E in 1975 (throttle stuck open) just missed the side of the bus as I dropped it on its side at the T junction. You can keep your wheelies for the chavs on the pit bikes - other motorcyclists are available and this does not constitute the view of the management

It's funny that reviewers always comment about the vibration. I get it though. When you review a bike you are looking for anything you can comment on. I own a 2022 CB650R and honestly, I have never been howling down a windy road and thought "this bike is vibrating a bit" lol. I am way too excited and involved in the ride. It's a fantastic bike to thrash. It loves it. More! More! MORE! it wants you to rev it to the red line over and over. It's very satisfying. If you just dawdle around town though you might be better off with a twin with more low down torque but if you plan on taking it to the twisty roads, it's an absolute hoot to ride.

I think this is a great Honda 'engineered' product and at launch a solution for a bike which fits a segment where as an inline 4 it is pretty unique. Opening up an up and down auto style change to engines/gearboxes without that option today, plus removing the need to even touch the clutch lever will give a group of riders (commuters, new bikers and those who find an all day ride with a clutch to operate physically difficult) the opportunity to enjoy biking. Be super to see it grow through the Honda range as an alternative to their quick shifter, I'd like to try it on Hornet 750 and possibly Hornet 1000 ?

Brilliant overview of the bikes and the system. The one topic that never seems to be mentioned is clutch less shifting. It’s a skill I picked up years ago and once mastered, is just as good os a quick shifter. When quick shifters came along, I was initially excited but, now, I’m not sure I would choose one over full manual. E clutch looks like amazing tech but, adds to the potential of crippling service and maintained e costs after warranty has expired.
@Mufga81
@Mufga81 4 ай бұрын
Clutchless shifting is faster than conventional shifts, for sure. But quickshifters are faster than clutchless shifts because you keep the throttle open - I timed & tested this with an R1 and a dyno on Bike magazine in 2010. And Honda says E-Clutch shifts 20% faster than a quickshifter. As for "crippling service and maintenance costs", Honda's engineers told me the only difference is a little extra calibration work when it comes time to replace the whole clutch. Other than that, nowt.

I can hardly wait to get this bike with the e-clutch if/when Honda brings it to the US market! I know how to shift with a clutch and will probably use it from time to time but I love having the option of getting a perfect shift, up or down, by simply using the shift lever.

My previous bike was a nearly new 21 CBR650R (first big bike). I quickly bought the Honda Quick Shifter and fitted it myself, a fairly easy job, If buying a new one now I would definitely go for the e-clutch version. Having moved onto a bike with a good quickshifter/blipper for up/down shifts (Ducati Panigale V2,) I would have appreciated that on the Honda and at £100 with little impact on running costs or normal functionality, I can’t see Honda supplying many without the e-clutch! My guess is also that the £100 is barely covering the costs on this! Well done Honda!

It's a shame that Honda still didn't put an electronic throttle on this bike and give us a proper up-down quick shifter. I know some people will love this Eclutch if they do a lot of stop-start riding in traffic or if they have arthritis or even if they are a complete noob but personally I don't want this on my bike. It is the opposite of why I ride a motorcycle. I want to be in control, I want to be involved and I don't want this on my bike even if I have the option to not use it. It waters down the whole point of motorcycling for me. Also the cancer on the side of the motor is ugly so that's another reason why I wouldn't get it. When I saw the 2024 reveal of the CB650R I quickly ran out to get a brand new 2022 model that was sitting in a dealership and I am loving it. I got a great deal on it too. I think the old one looks better and has everything that it needs to be an excellent motorcycle, bar the up-down quick shifter.

Did you ever try finding neutral on one those? You have to very old like me to remember them! I just think the riding aspect is quickly being taken away from proper riding so, the clutch hand can hold a mobile phone, that you can view whilst riding with those transparent gloves you see riders wearing these days. Flip flops, shorts, t-shirts and an unfastened lid with no visor; Proper organ donor mode! Skin will be of no use for grafting onto a recipient.

If your really needing to shed some weight to ride really aggressive your probably gonna want to lean towards the 600cc class anyways. Or even like a ninja400 , Can also shed some weight pretty easy. I'm confused by the elaborate description. You say you can override what the bike "wants to do". So it does automatically change gears without using the foot gear shift? If not, it's in practice exactly the same as an up and down quick shifter bar the stopping and starting without manual engangement of the clutch. I realise it works differently mechanically than a quick shifter but is that basically it?
@bennettsbikesocial
@bennettsbikesocial 20 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question. The system effectively negates the requirement of a clutch but it won't change gear for you. It's the same manual transmission that requires the rider's input but you simply don't need the clutch at all for any aspect of riding. However, it is still available should you need/want it. Tight turns in a car park, riding on loose surfaces, or simply being there as a backup should a rider's old habits require! Hope that helps. Cheers, Michael M

Interesting review Mufga, I like how open-minded you are to new technology. I've got a DCT NT1100 and I'll see if I can get a test ride on one of these when my bike goes in for a service this year.

I really like this reviewer, nicely explained. I still don't understand why you would want an e-clutch? Doesn’t sound as smooth going down the box as a standard auto blipper. Isn't part of the joy of motorcycling the skill of clutch control? I wonder what class this bike would fall into if riding it on a motorcycle test?
@Mufga81
@Mufga81 4 ай бұрын
I believe it's classed as a manual motorcycle - my understanding is you'll need a manual licence to ride it. As for whether you could cheat the system by passing your test on an E-Clutch bike, demonstrate no clutch control skill in the process and still get a full manual licence as a result... maybe, I guess that could be possible. That's one for the DVSA to look into, I guess.

I own A CBR650R with the quick shifter thats a great addition. I will say this about the Eclutch - first impressions is its a big ugly lump of metal sticking out of the side of the crankcase is what struck me initially.

I am disappointed with the new visual of the 2024 model, the old "side pods" and tail were so much better! Also, not a fan of that black plastic on the tank which used to be paint. The new headlight also seems a bit droopy compared to the on-plane 2023 version. Seems like Honda is trying too hard to be "modern" for the sake of changing things. The 750 hornet also got this treatment and looks quite bad in my opinion.

Apart from down shifts (until RBW) , I can see E Clutch being better than Quickshifter as you sometimes don't get smooth up changing with Quickshifter. With E Clutch do you have to close the throttle on changing up, or does the ignition cut like Quickshifter?.
@Mufga81
@Mufga81 4 ай бұрын
You don't have to close the throttle to upshift. E-Clutch works with a quickshifter, which cuts fuel & spark to allow the next gear to slot in.

@Mufga81
@Mufga81 3 ай бұрын
@@ChrisSauer-oe5ve Like a two-way quickshifter, it's meant for you to shift down with a completely closed throttle. E-Clutch will, however, change down even if you have the throttle open somewhat.

Its basically typical underbone(Asia's staple bikes) shifting such as xrm125 and the like, manual gearbox minus clutch lever in this case they left the clutch lever available still for some reason

Love the channel. So the E-Clutch does the same thing as a Rekluse clutch... with extra steps? I rode the MV with the Rekluse, and it was very good. Does the "E Clutch" have any advantage over the Rekluse?
@Mufga81
@Mufga81 4 ай бұрын
I've not ridden or tested a Rekluse clutch, but my understanding is that's a purely mechanical system working on centrifugal force alone. That would mean clutch engagement is linked just to engine rpm. And that would mean, for example, the clutch can't disengage when you're changing gears. E-Clutch, being electronic rather than mechanical, is able to have far greater and more flexible control over the clutch.

At 7.31...im sure you know Martin lots of bikes still have throttle cables but still are fly by wire (my vfr12 for example)
@Mufga81
@Mufga81 4 ай бұрын
Sure. On those bikes (early Yam rbw systems were the same, I think) the cables from the twistgrip don't go to the throttles, but push & pull a sensor. On these 650s the cables go directly to the throttle bodies.

How many times will someone come up at a meet and blip the throttle on one of these, and it takes off because it was still in 1st gear? It almost happened to me on my Rekluse KTM, fortunately I was in neutral at the time, but the dude could not have known.

Is it a tacit admission that the far more complex DCT system is a failure - at least in so much as popularity is concerned? Despite marketing hype no one believes. Sales numbers are a function of forcing DCT models onto the show floor and discounting them heavily.
