My opinion: Composer (Melodies and accompaniments): Elton by a long shot Better Lyricist: Joel by a long shot (If this were a Taupin vs. Joel debate my answer would be vastly different, but the works Elton has written on his own have not gone well Better Singer (most subjective): When we get down to technicality, John is the better singer. His range is much larger and overall ability is greater.

Lord Dingus Hi. I definitely agree with Joel’s lyrical creativity. But I should argue that Johns voice holds up way better. His vocals on his slower songs like Rocket Man and Burn Down the Mission are so incredibly powerful and practically perfect that it blows Joel out of the water. His fast songs are still energetic, and frantic. Vocal talent goes to John too I believe. Lyrics definitely debatable.

Billy Joel is the ONLY modern rock pianist in Elton John's class. We have nobody following them. I adored both of them growing up, as a pianist and a singer. I feel terribly for the generation behind us. They have no idea what the roots of rock and roll came from (Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, gospel, jazz). Please, prove me wrong. Seriously.

If ever there were two equals in the arts, it is these two. Elton had better the vocal chops early in his career, but Billy wrote his own lyrics. It's impossible to say definitively who is better overall. It's a matter of personal preference. Elton is more prolific but has also produced far more mediocre stuff than Billy. At their best, they are equally great.

Rough to watch. Billys voice is shot. Has been forever he sounds good when he has to really yell or use the growl but singing softer like on Bennie and the Jets it sounds awful. Elton is far superior for both vocal and piano

Billy's voice has held up better than Elton's. Elton was once the vastly superior singer back in the day, until vocal surgery wiped out his entire upper register. Now they are roughly equals, vocally speaking, and in just about every other musical way.

@@seanscanlon9067 "Vastly" might be overstating it, but Elton was clearly the more skilled vocalist early in their careers and until he blew out his voice. It hardly matters. These two are so evenly matched overall that's impossible to say who is "better" with any conviction. I'm more of a Billy guy than an Elton guy ultimately, but that is just more of a personal preference. I have mad respect and admiration for both of them as artists.
