I saw him live with Moving Parts in a small German venue. He is just awesome. That guy can pull off a 10 minute drum solo that doesn't get boring, even when he's only using the Toms for 4-5 minutes straight. And he's a nice guy too. I got myself an autograph on my smartphone case. Well... I'm a drummer and I admire his skill, so I stopped using it, to protect the autograph from being destroyed :D Have a nice day everyone!

So it seems it takes a guitarplayer to write the first comment on this drum video. Benny Greb is really one of the finest drummers in Germany. I hope that aside from guitar Thomann is able to become established with videos of other instruments like saxophones, brass, keys and others.

I first just picked sticks for comfort, the better my technique gets the more I choose sticks for their sound properties. Different sticks can really change the sound - but it does require good technique before that happens, that’s my experience.

Thing is, some music stores will not let you try out new sticks on their drums and cymbals. The shop with the best stick range near me has some sticks for the purpose of testing the drums but it's very unlikely to be the specific stick you want to test on the drums before buying.

It's difficult to think of a more instructive drummer than Benny.. Maybe someone like Mr. GAVIN HARRISON could pick up the pace just fine about.. maybe his use of cymbals? I don't know, but it's a cool idea, so keep bringing drummers in for this!

Just go for 2b and get used to it. It's punchy, accentuate the low end (and some say it reduces the unwanted dynamics [specially useful in studio])

I'm coming around to this idea. I think you're right. And for those that think all 2b's are heavy, they're not. You can find lighter ones. I have a pair of VF 2b's that weigh less than my 5a and 5b sticks.

I mean, if you’re seriously broke, they’re better than nothing, but you’re seriously cheating yourself by having sub-par sticks that break all the time. In the long run, it’s a waste of money and time. What I would recommend is trying a few different sizes and styles (buy like 2-3 pairs each of the most popular sizes; 7A, 5A, 5B, 2B, if you can help it), so you can see what agrees better with your style and needs. Also consider the material, like maple (soft, light, dynamic), hickory (more sturdy, still dynamic, very popular), or oak (very sturdy, usually loud and heavy). A big thing I see is hard hitters using pencil-thin sticks, which sure, it’s very light and feels nimble, but you’re putting more physical effort into getting volume out of the drums, and the sticks break more. Heavier sticks take less effort to get volume out of your drums, and they last longer. Just be sure that with the heavier sticks, you hit your cymbals properly (at an angle / “figure 8 technique”, NOT straight down and through), so you don’t make them explode. Another thing, you can buy bricks of sticks (of course after deciding what size and style you like) and most shops worth their salt will knock down the individual unit price because you’re getting more. THAT, is a much more worthy investment.

he uses his left foot to hit both the hi hat and slave bass drum pedal at the same time. if you pay close attention, i believe the quarter note down beats are played by the left beater, and all the up beats are played on the right.

No he is not. Benny does not use the dualist. Don't state your assumption as fact. You can clearly see 2 beaters next to each other.
@DZNTZ
@DZNTZ 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think he’s playing a slave pedal at all... I believe he’s using the Sonor pedal that has 2 beaters and a heel-toe mechanism to play both. This is likely, though I’m not positive. Sonor sponsor, no obvious slave pedal in view, don’t see his foot moving over at all. That ‘double pedal’ by Sonor is pricey and takes a Greb to play, so I’m not going there! But I’d bet my drumsticks that’s what he’s using.
