This is really cool. The Wheels on Meals fight is my all-time favorite screen fight since it's so fast and has so much contact. Benny didn't mention it in the interview, but I read that he hit Jackie accidentally quite a bit at first and he was almost fired. Maybe that's why Benny gets hit so hard near the end of the fight in slow-mo. It's sad that the Real Stunts Era is pretty much dead. Hundreds of stunt men paid with their lives but it was glorious.

His fight scenes with Jackie are among the greatest of all time, they were both hard hitting and genuine. I look at the soft hits in movies like The Raid 2 and sigh when people call that awesome. Action movies have truly regressed.
@TheTrueNarthumpulous
@TheTrueNarthumpulous 6 жыл бұрын
You're right. Benny and Jackies fights were brutal and very believably choreographed. I don't agree with you about The Raid, though. Action in movies has definitely regressed. But The Raid was definitely a step back in the right direction. It captured the primality of fighting very well. The hits weren't as hard, that's for sure. But the heart of the action was spot on.

I hope you are joking right? The Raid cheoography is built with same principle as Jackie Chan movies, an actor do their own fight and same editing technique to convey movement and impact.

Pretty classy for Benny to only talk about the fond memories he had with the 3. During the shooting of Wheels on Meals, there was some tension on the set between Jackie and Benny because Jackie was going super hard and nailing Benny in the face several times.

In an interview from Keith Vitali, he said it was because of Jackie and he also joked that they should get in the ring together and Benny was like you don't want me the ring. But it dissipated the same day when they all went out to eat and just laughed about it. Source was from Keith Vitali's interview about his experience on Wheels on Meals.

@@Vastspartan Bruce Lee was a martial artist before he was ever an actor. Whether or not he ever competed to your satisfaction does not diminish that reality and what he has done for martial arts in general. That being said, I went out with Benny's daughter for a time in the early 2000's. I spent an Easter with her and her family who were all high level martial artists in their own right, but beyond that they were all very genuine down to earth people. While we were all sitting at the table eating, Monique put me on the spot and said to Benny that I had a question for him. My jaw nearly hit the floor because I was not expecting her to bring up a question I asked her some time previously, and jokingly, as to who would win in a fight. A question he had undoubtedly heard many times before, but still... If ever a record skipped it surely felt like it did right then and there. There can be a lot of pressure in silence, but I asked the question and I never forgot his answer. Benny calmly said to me "I can't speculate on things that will never come to pass." And that was that. I always thought that was a great answer. The type of speculation you are alluding to is just a waste of time. No disrespect.

It's funny how some actors claim they don't want to hang out and joke around with other actors who are playing the antagonists/villains because they want their performance to really seem as if they really hate their characters (Daniel Radcliffe for example didn't want to speak to Ralph Fiennes on set of Harry Potter for this reason). meanwhile you have Benny and Jackie who had the best time together on set and it didn't effect their performances at all! I really hated Benny's characters because he played them so well and he was a creepy bad ass fighter when I was young!

To those saying who will win: All fighters feel they can win the other fighter. Regardless of whatever high level moves they may demonstrate in front of each other, they feel that their own arsenal can somehow counter them. That's why Jackie said they were going to fight for real, and why Benny said his wish was to spar with Jackie and Sammo. (For example, a grappler may show how to take down stikers, but the striker, even while witnessing it, would believe that their movement and angles can offset the balance of the grappler CONSISTENTLY (AS LONG AS THEY SPEND SOME TIME ON THE FUNDAMENTAL DEFENSE AGAINST THOSE MOVES). If you truly think you're Master level, that's how you would think.) As for why they didn't fight, I'm sure the only reason is that Jackie's profession and fame were too burdensome. Jackie getting everyone pumped for the fight hinted at the competitive nature in his heart. If he was not the iconic actor Jackie Chan, I'm sure they would've sparred (hard). Things to note: 1. Jackie is a much larger man than Benny even if he doesn't look it on film. Benny is 5' 6.1" while Jackie is 5' 8.5". If you had never fought, it may seem like a small matter, but any fighter knows that a difference and weight AND height causes the smaller man to exert much more and reach a lot more (assuming both are skilled fighters). 2. Jackie is many weight classes above Benny, with Benny's top weight class being Welterweight (147 lbs)). Jackie's weight is 165lbs, and considering the fact that he keeps a strict diet, that would be his fighting weight. 3. Benny fights for a living, and is more accustomed to being hit (within the realm of legal strikes). 4. Jackie is accustomed to much heavier life-threatening blows than limb strikes (e.g., a stunt in Armour of God, where he cracked his skull falling headfirst into a rock that caused a piece of his bone to penetrate his skull, a stunt where he fell from the clock tower, etc.). NOTE THIS DOES NOT MEAN JACKIE IS INVINCIBLE AGAINST PUNCHES. It only means that he is prepared and conditioned to tolerate crazy punishment as long he he thinks it's worth it. 5. They both have trained in various martial arts. However, Jackie only has a black belt in Hapkido, where he trained under Grand Master Jin Pal Kim, while Benny has multiple black belts. 6. Note that the acrobatics martial arts school Jackie was in at a young age was hardcore training style with beatings for any mistake (harsher environment and standard of performance than dojos). This is proven by Sammo, who is fat but able to move like that. To become the Seven Little Fortunes, they HAD to have suffered more than black belts. 7. Benny may struggle against styles outside of his sport (e.g., his struggle against Prayout Sittiboonlert's Thai style of fighting (i.e., locking and kneeing)). 8. Jackie, unfortunately, has no records of ring fights. This is a big disadvantage for Jackie. 9. Note that Jackie has superior agility and mobility ALONG with an advantage in size and weight (NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND), although as mentioned in the interview Benny was able to do 18 flips despite it not being his area of expertise. The biggest advantage for Benny would be ring fighting experience, while for Jackie it would be his height, reach, and weight while actually being the more agile of the two (which when combined is a HUGE factor). All of the above are merely factors. The fact that Benny was a competitive fighter is a strong case for him. Therefore, I tried to list some factors that were in favour of Jackie because unfortunately, Jackie's profession was acting. However, from that interview, you could see Jackie's desire seeping through even though he had to be mature about it in the end. In the end, I believe that both believed they could've beaten the other. It's just unfortunate that Jackie's position made him hold back. How can you tell Jackie truly wants to fight, and did not learn all those martial arts for visuals in movies? The answer is actually quite obvious. It seeps through again from his behaviours. That is why he always wants the other guy to hit him for real, without thinking about the consequences like a reckless youth. He really wants full contact fighting, but can't. He says that they'll hit the ground hard, but adds "not the face." You can see his competitive nature and desire to fight, but his acting career keeping him in check. If Jackie was a no-name actor, and fighting Benny would make him big, I bet the fight would've happened in that scenario.

Urasitti One of Jackie's greatest strengths is his eagerness to learn. In the early days of his career as an extra, even if he was playing a dead body, he would position himself in a way so he'd be able to see and learn what was going on behind the scenes, camera setting and lighting etc. He knew how everything worked at a very young age, and had the exuberance and enthusiasm to do them better than others. That's his biggest advice to young people, grab your opportunity to learn...or you'll be playing a dead body forever.

If you were in Japan back in 70s,and had any interest in martial arts, Benny's impact was enormous that I can't even describe. He even started comic book as an main character. He was also such an gentlemanly, so different from a lot of today's UFC fighter's on camera performance "even though it may be staged ".Utmost respect for this true master.

truly awe inspiring personality and charisma. Jackie had the good sense of not truly fighting him. I wonder if Bruce Lee could have beaten him easily in his prime.

You have to understand in order to love, you have to learn how to beat the living sh!t out of people. LOL I don't think I have heard him talk other than a few short lines in a movie. He was funny in Gross Point Blank, though.
