It's sad that you need to explain that it isn't bad for him to live in an apartment. A dog is absolutely not interested if he is living in a huge house with garden or in a caravan with 8 m². The main thing is that the dog is getting attention and having the chance to run and make brain exercises till he is tired and then the dog needs a pillow or a place on the floor, nothing more. You're doing it great, Benny looks like a happy dog and that is what counts, that the dog is happy too, not only the humans.

@@danceswithcarsdc BMD are very gppd guard dogs without being too agressive about it. if you have a farm like us, a BMD will absolutely bark at strangers - ours outright hated salesmen and litterally caged them in their own cars as they refused to come out and instead called us on the phone. however they are very friendly to persons they either know or are greeted friendly by their owners, to the point where our neighbours could visit us and he didnt react at all since he knew their car and their smell.

My girlfriend and I have a 1 year old berner. We used to live in a townhouse and all she ever wanted to do was go outside so we decided we needed to get a house with a yard for her. We fenced the yard so that she could have free reign whenever she wanted to go outside, but she really only wants to go outside if we are also outside. She doesn't care where she is as long as we are with her.

I just want to emphasize, that you should only get a berner when the climate you live in is not too hot. Those are furry mountain dogs, most comfortable in temperatures below 10°C. They prefer being in the snow. They have their own opinion, and have a natural sense to guard (but basically they just want to greet everyone, not actually guard). So don't be surprised if they do their own thing if they are bored. They are family dogs, they love their family, and no matter how heavy they get, they will always be lap dogs, and are super friendly to everyone. Be prepared for a lot of heat and no personal space. But they are absolutely adorable. I love bernese mountain dogs. Greetings from Switzerland. :-)

@@danceswithcarsdc Well trimming is a controversial topic. Here in Switzerland they do not recommend it. Berners have 2 layers, the topcoat is for water resistance, dirt protection etc. and the underlaying, wooly coat is for the temperature regulations. so trimming the topcoat doesn't make sence, and trimming the under fur can actually cause it to grow stronger back, therefore start matting. and berners regulate heat by panting. so by trimming actually leave them endangered to sunburns, getting wet and sick, but dont help them regulate heat, as they can't sweat like humans do. there are also some evidence that by trimming the fur can fall out, or doesn't grow back properly. the only thing that really helps is to brush out the under fur every second day, especially when they are shedding.
@Genesis23OPB

@@danceswithcarsdc agree with the other person that i dont recommend it at all. the Berner Sennenhund loses too long fur by himself and regulates temperature like every other dog as well. ours love to bathe in small rivers to help cool down too.

Your Bennie looks almost like our Kate. She was a big girl, 115lbs. She has been gone for 15 years (she lived only 7.5 years) and I still miss her. Best dog in the world, so great with our human baby even when she was in pain from a weird genetic ailment. And yea they do need a job during the day like following you around everywhere and flipping your hands off the keyboard, and they need to exercise, but like a lot of large breeds they prefer to flop around after they’ve done their duty, as close to you as possible of course. Our BMD used to lead us with her teeth gently to bed when she was tired. They are heartbreakers and characters for sure!

Yeah, after having 2 male BMD, both were mother-hens. Love kids, and offsprings of other animals as well. And socialize also with strangers. Neighborhood kids came to ask our dog for a walk, sometimes had to say that come to play in the garden with him instead, because these kids had their head about same height as the dog's. And can't give dog to so young kids no matter how well behaving he is.

When we lost Gunnar shortly after our our granddaughter was born we got Miss Gabby our 1st female. This race is the answer for people wanting a permanent puppy that's upscaled 10 times and lives for 10 years :D I had a Golden from 2002 to 2015 too. These are very nice too. Also sheds heavily. Mixing dark and bright dogs could lead to interesting amounts of shed on your clothes xD At least with a golden you can wear bright clothes and vice versa with Berner (dark clothes). If you have both, you can't fix it, you will ALWAYS end up with dog hair clearly visible on your clothes.

I’ve seen it dogs that lives in big houses with 1 to 2 acres back yard but doesn’t have half of the love we have for our Zoe . I’ve seen dogs that doesn’t like going to their own backyard . This is so sad . Than here we are living in an apartment with this huge bear 🐼 and she is so happy very happy and loved by us . I was considering rescuing and old one (8 years old), am aware of their age and health issues. He is an outside dog, lived on a farm, not allowed inside. My situation is a small 2 room apartment outside on the countryside (plenty of space outside) so I was wondering if you have any tips as a small apartment Bernese owner :)
@TieDyeVikki
@TieDyeVikki 4 жыл бұрын
At that age, the BIGGER question is, do you have STEPS going in and out of your apartment? As you know, Berners are prone to hip and joint issues, plus an older dog may have to go out to pee more often. Also, steps could be foreign and scary to him since he's always been strictly an outside dog. Affixing carpet or tread strips to steps is very helpful. Also, he may (or may not) have difficulties adapting to living indoors and learning potty training, rules, and general manners. And he may not be quite the socialized cuddly dog Benny is, for instance hugs may claustrophobic for him. You also should be financially prepared for any medical bills and meds an older Berner may require, especially if he has any joint problems or develops cancer. I don't think the small apartment is a problem, as long as he has a chance to get outside for some exercise every day (important for maintaining joint support and a healthy weight). Most Berners get short bursts of energy, and then they just want to lie down and be a couch potato. BTW, I think adopting an older dog and allowing it to live out the remainder of its life in a good, safe, loving home is a wonderful thing to do. You are essentially volunteering for the toughest years of dog ownership, emotionally and quite possibly financially, up to and including the inevitable goodbye. But it means the world to the dog! Sometimes I think I'd like to do it myself, but honestly I'm not sure I'm completely up to it. It could feel like more of a burden to take care of an old dog that I didn't raise and bond with from puppyhood like my own child. But then again, the dying part probably wouldn't be nearly as hard on me. So there are lots of positives and negatives to consider. FYI, sometimes with older or special needs dogs, rescues will allow you to foster for life and they cover all expenses, or all but food, or whatever arrangement works for everyone. The rescue could seek a SPONSOR, as there are plenty of dog lovers out there who can't have a dog themselves but have the money to sponsor one.

@@TieDyeVikki thank you very much for your tips and insight. I don't mind training/retraining him at all. I must shamefully admit I slightly forgot about the stairs problem and well, I do have plenty. What really surprised me in your comment is the fact he could be claustrophobic, being used to live outside. I didn't think about it but that might be a genuine problem. Financially and timewise I have the luxury to study/work from home. One of the main reason I'm considering older dogs in general is, it being the first experience, I don't yet feel ready to dictate the next 10/15 years of my life with a puppy. I do know that Bernese mountain dogs have a shorter lifespan and that the oldest is at 15 so I don't mind it for the next 2-7 years. Once again thank you for your comment and tips, really helpful!
@TieDyeVikki
@TieDyeVikki 4 жыл бұрын
I meant claustrophobic in terms of possibly not enjoying hugging and cuddling due to probably not being well socialized. But I suppose he could feel somewhat claustrophobic just being indoors too. He may find it too hot/stuffy or just unfamiliar, and be asking to go out all the time. Then again, if you live in a warm area and run A/C in the summer, he may not want to leave the house! I wouldn't worry about it too much... If he is able to form a bond with you (which I'm guessing he will once he experiences love and attention, since Berners are people dogs by nature), he will want to be wherever you are. The fact that you're able to be home most the time is a huge advantage in a case like this, with working through any anxiety he may have during the transition, and with training. That's understandable if you're not in a position right now to make the long-term commitment a pup requires, and taking in an older dog could be perfect for you. Now you just have to figure out if he has shown an signs of joint problems and whether he can handle steps. The rescue has probably x-rayed his hips and maybe shoulders, elbows, knees and wrists too, and they'll help decide. Rescues usually want you to have a fenced in yard too, but between you living in the country and his age, maybe they'd waive that requirement. Good luck!

I’ve always been fascinated by this breed, they immediately put a smile on my face whenever I see them. My vet has only owned BMD’s. They must be really special if people buy them knowing that they don’t live as long. After my chow passed away I got a little dog because I wanted a friend who would live a long time. However I miss having a big dog in bed with big snuggles, and I miss having a dog that would enjoy the outdoors and hiking. My little dog is terrified of being in the woods with me. Dogs bring so much joy, it might be worth it getting another one, especially since I’m working from home right now.

3 years a pup, 3 years an adult and 3 years an OAP...any longer is a blessing. I've wanted a berner for 30 odd years, ever since a customer on my milk round, who had 5, and I got "attacked" on my first day...the fear when they charged towards me that so quickly changed to affection got me hooked and I carried biscuits with me every day after that 😂 It's never been the right time for me to have a dog though. But now as I'm older things have changed and I'm going be looking at rescuing to one to go with my 4 cats. Gonna enjoy watching yours, and 100's of others, till then. I know of plenty of berners who are much healthier on a raw diet. Even know of some living to 12-15 that were just fed tripe their whole life.

Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred originally as farm working dogs in the Canton Berne in Switzerland. They were used for herding cows and for pulling small carts. When I grew up in 1950s Switzerland, you didn't buy milk in the supermarket. The milkman came every day and you put out special coins (milk money) together with a dedicated milk kettle. Our milkman had a cart with a milk urn pulled by a Bernese Mountain Dog named Barry. The dog absolutely loved his job.

All your reasons are 100% correct! I love Bernese Mountain Dogs. Benny looks so sweet! My Sidney is an attention hound; he's either bouncing all over the place or he sleeps on the sofa. Sorry you have to explain the apartment thing, but you're right. Sid basically lives in two rooms in our house. As long as he has love and a favorite place to sleep (preferably a cool place for the summer months), he's good. Sounds like Benny's very similar.

I have learned with my currently three Labrador Retrievers that I absolutely have to start the day with an hour and a half walk in order to reduce their energy levels to civilized proportions. I have had 15 month old Mossy since she was born. When we are all out on a walk, she loves to come back and sit on my foot and lean up against my leg. When I'm sitting down in a folding chair out in the field, she likes to jump up with all her hundred pounds or so into my lap and either sit there for a while or else immediately jump down to mix it up with the other dogs.

8:10 I love your video and will share my Berner story I had my Berner Otis for 13 yrs., I am 62 and don’t mind sharing the BMD is by far the best, most kind, loyal, compassionate, sensitive, humorous, breed I’ve ever had the pleasure of having as a furbaby. I could tell you story after story of this dogs sense of humor, his protective yet caring nature. How all of my granddaughters, all 6 used him for a pillow, a pony when they where little, and always knew they were watched over when Otis was on guard. He always knew if I was sad or upset and he would do something silly like make his duck say AFLAC… or bring a ball with his front leg hop… like let’s go play with all his excitement .. right up to his last days in April of 2023. He could learn any command given

Another example of a very similar dog to the Bernese Mountain Dog or the Golden Retriever that isn't very well known, is the Leonberger. So if you aren't really sure whether you want another Bernese or a Golden, I really recommend you to take a look at the Leonberger.

Benny seems like a happy dog :) Our bernie spent his first 1,5 year in an apartment, and it's really no issue (apart from when the power went out, and the elevator stopped working, and I had to carry him down 4 flights of stairs, lol), as long as they get plenty of time outside. Our boy has just passed 2,5 years of age, and has started calming down significantly the past 2-3 months. It's really noticeable. If anyone's got any questions about the breed, I'd be happy to answer!

This is great! I have been thinking about getting a Bernese Mountain Dog in a couple of years, and have been wondering one thing if you don't mind me asking! How long are you able to leave and come back, depending on the age I suppose. I understand it might be better, if someone was to be gone for a good bit of the day, to leave him in a dog daycare type place, but I was just curious as to what someone who has had experience with the breed might think? I would definitely make time for the majority of at least the first year to spend bonding with him, but say I get a busier job after that, what might be the best bet? Perhaps I hold off? I'd appreciate a response, but no worries! Thanks!

@@jessicamyers9557 - Hi Jessica! I'd say that with a whole lot of proper training, it should be possible to leave a bernie for 5-6 hours. Our boy has a fair bit of separation anxiety, but we're now to the point where we can leave him home for the ~4 hours each day that me and my SO's working hours overlap, and he's been home alone 5-6 hours a few times. I would caution you, though, that every dog is an individual, and you never quite know how a dog is going to deal with being alone... The earlier you start with separation training, the better the odds :)

About the calming - around 3 years old they become just cuddle bugs who want pets and love. Some fun is in place tho! And they still need exercise or they'll start digging in your garden. Had that happen - many times, with my 3rd bernie. Every dog, same behaviour.

Always admired BMD’s and have always had large dogs till few years ago when my Lab and GSD passed over the🌈 bridge in same year. I got old somehow and some of my parts are like fused/glued together. Got a Spaniel and he’s just right size. Love your dog as he is much like my Great Dane/GSD mix (135lbs.) who lived almost 14 years and cuddled, slept where he pleased, very smart, friendly to everything but chickens.as he simply thought they were toys to catch. Never hurt one but they seemed upset when was holding it in his mouth. Ben behaves much like Cubby did. You have a great dog and he seems very fond of his family. Will keep up with Ben’s videos. Thanks for reminding me how great big dog really are. 🦴🐕‍🦺🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾😃👍

Most of the traits you describe sound so much like my own dog (not a bmd). She is a BGS (Bayerischer Gebirgsschweißhund) and all the things you described (like loving people, strangers, laying on top of you, jumping on park benches etc.) sound so much like her. She is such a couch potato and doesn't even want to move a lot all day.

Berenese love to be loved. Feed them, be with them and have a fun bathroom area which it looks like you do. Great job and enjoy your furry friend for as long as you can. It is true about the lifespan it’s way too short for all involved it will never be enough but they love you more than you could ever love yourself it is who they are so embrace the time you have and take lots of photos and videos. I was looking for another pound puppy and found a “Bernese “ a year later she is missing about 100lbs and not a Bernese but it’s okay once I saw that they have a short life span and that would kill. I have an Australian Sheppard that looks like Benny and is mistaken for a Bernese at times. He was donated to a foundation and went through 18-months of training to be a Service Dog. He's now 6-years old and has been with me for 3.5 years. He is super smart, almost too smart for his own good. Has to have a job so he loves it when I put his vest on and we "go to work". Loves to cuddle and is very playful.
