My Master, Dr. D. S. Kim, provided to us the Texas penal code on self-defense and required us to understand it and train others for self-defense with legal requirements in mind. Probably a smart way for him to legally protect his school from the poor judgement of some student. Thanks, Master U. You inspired me back in the day, and still do. Hope you enjoy this- we used to put mats by a car in the lot outside the dojang and take turns trying to get our keys in the lock and getting in while all the other black belts beat you with rolled up newspapers (those hurt like hell). Mostly you'd end up under the car or barely getting away with a bunch of nasty welts. Cops only came once and thought we were nuts. Martial arts life was the best. And you lived it better than anybody, Mr. Jet. And the bottom-line wisdom from this interview was your focus on head movement, level changes and evasive footwork that enables you to load up and focus on targets. Good interview. Thanks.

As a lifetime coach now 67, this is so true. The tricky line is to expose reality to students who really need to face their fears without putting them off. It has to be a gradual process under a the careful guidance of a good coach.
