After overhearing so many pathetically conversations people have about lifts I have decided to start a series about lift misconceptions.

Most average people have never even seen a lift shaft or a counterweight so have no clue how a lift works. All they know is they push a button, the doors open and it takes them to the floor they want. Naturally they're going to think if it goes wrong it'll fall downwards. They don't teach about lifts in school so how would they ever know. I was standing waiting for a particularity slow lift one day with a group of people and an old lady said "keep pushing the button it'll make it come faster". In her head she actually believed pressing the button would make it run faster. I said it wouldn't but she wouldn't have it. I just had thoughts of the lift arriving with a load of disheveled passenger who'd just been on a rollercoaster ride in a lift because someone kept pushing the call button to make it come faster. It's amazing what people think.

At my school, a janitor was waiting for the lift, which had passed the floor she on, and was going up. The button was not pressed. I asked her why the button wasn't pressed, and the janitor said, translating from my language "It is going up, so if I press the button it will come down and ignore everyone going up". Basically the lift will prioritise that call according to her.

This video mostly covers traction (cable driven) elevators/lifts. On a hydraulic elevator, if this were to happen it would free fall downwards… but very slowly since the oil would be draining from the hydraulic pistons at a pretty slow rare

Beno This is in Lebanon. The capacity was reduced from 4 people to 3 after modernization but it is still big enough to fit more than four people. I've ridden it with five people once (which is probably a very bad idea) and there was still enough space for one more.

To be fair, a layperson imagines an extremely simplified lift in its simple mechanical form, a weight on a string, and regular people know that if you break the string, the weight will fall. I mean, I know to everyone here they seem stupid, but I'm sure there is plenty of stuff you say about things you aren't familiar with that annoy experts in their respective field. The majority of people only know basic physics and mechanics. educate don't hate :3

And it's not fair to say that everyone who doesn't understand the inner workings of a lift is stupid - most people aren't interested in lifts and that's OK - different people like different things. I could not care less about football, for example. I wouldn't really like someone ranting about how stupid I am just because I know fuck all about football, or fashion or cars or whatever they're interested in that I'm not. I like the series to educate people but telling people that they're stupid for not being interested in and not being super knowledgeable about something that you're interested in isn't helpful or necessary

This sounds like an interesting series! I've started to get into lifts only a few weeks ago (when I discovered this awesome channel) and so I also know a few "facts" which I'm pretty sure are misconceptions: 1. If you're on top of a lift and it goes all the way up, you get squashed like a pancake 2. Are there any weird button combinations which you can press to unlock special features? 3. The lift arrives faster when you keep pressing the goddamn button for 5 minutes 4. Is it possible to jump floors by holding down the button for the floor you wanna go to, even though somebody wants to get in? 5. Why are you not allowed to use lifts in case of a fire? 6. I once was in a lift in a store which went up so quickly and braked so hard, that you were close to lifting off at the top... Would that actually be possible? - So, that's it for now. Some of these are my expectations, others are myths my friends told me... You're probably bashing your head against the wall now after you've faced that much stupidity in one comment. Still, this should give you some inspiration for future videos 😂

1. I know of a couple of hydraulic lifts that have no room at the top of the shaft, but most lifts have plenty of room. It is just a case of looking at how much space you have. Normally if I get on top a lift with no inspection no safety break it would be a building where I don't want anyone being alerted to me getting on top, which would normally be a big office building. Traction lifts usually have at least as many meters of space as they have in m/s speed. So a big office building will have plenty of space. Lifts with folding fences might have very little room, and you don't want to go to the top as often inspection doesn't work. 2. The only one I can think of is futuristic thyssenkrupp. One of the buttons (bottom right) of keypad floor selection is the settings button. Sometimes pressing settings, 1, 2, 3, 4, settings will take you a menu where you can change some settings. 3. No 4. There are a few ways. It depends what logic the lift has. All logics are different. Lester will skip a floor if you safety break the lift when it starts slowing down. Also there is the priority service trick where you can reverse the lift by leaving and entering priority service at the right moment. Some simple PLC lifts will bypass floors if you press door close at the right moment when the lift stops at a floor. 5. In case the main fuse blows. You are allowed to use fire lifts, but you have to go to the ground floor (or the floor marked with FSAL) and enter fire mode. 6. Traction lifts can't go more than G force 1 as there is no down pull on the lift, so if the motor was to go more than G force one all that would happen is the cables would go slack. Traction lifts never get to G force 1 anyway. Some hydraulic lifts do when you safety break them on the way up.

Thanks for explaining this. I was never scared of lifts plummeting because I knew of the Otis safety device (1854 Worlds Fair) - are these still used? I guess not. It does all make sense now, that the counterweight being heavier than the lift would force it upwards... Your videos are interesting - came for the trains/trams, stayed for the lifts and watching you get caught! Stay safe!

For the first one, although the belief is obviously only for traction elevators (because regular people think every elevator is a traction), it is not true for hydraulics (which don't even plummet at all, unless it's roped, in which it will plummet downwards), and counterweight-less systems using no kind of balancing weight system. But then again, normal people don't even know these kinds of elevator exist, so the rant still stands.

Roped hydraulics are fitted with a governor and safety gears you pillock.

Indeed, they are. However, roped hydraulics will plummet downwards since they have no counterweight to hold them up. However, this could only be caused by cable failure, which is unlikely, or brake failure, which is slower due to the fact the hydraulic piston has to descend at the rate the oil can flow out of it, and is why tractions are much more likely to plummet upwards, because that involves the counterweight, as opposed to downwards, which is caused either by the elevator being filled to about half or more, or by cable failure. Also, most freefall scenarios involve the brake failing. Traction elevators in this case freefall upwards unless the downwards freefall conditions above are met, and roped hydraulics will freefall downwards because of the lack of a counterweight.

You have obviously never seen a main ram seal burst then have you. The ram will descend pretty quick believe me, the need for a safety gear then becomes apparent as the low pressure switch is rendered redundant.

It mostly concerns traction elevators, which is the one most people will think of when they hear the word "elevator" or "lift", and are at risk of freefalling the most.

About the whole falling down the shaft thing, if a lift went wrong, the emergency brakes would apply. It would be an extremely well known event if a lift's emergency brakes didn't apply because it is so rare that the emergency brakes fail.

the only time i can think of by direct memory where lift cables snapped was 9/11. the obvious reason is because the towers said lifts were in were struck by aircraft. other than that, i cant think of any times off the top of my head that lift cables actually snapped. although in a documentary on the towers and survivors, one of them was in a lift that broke down because it lost its cables thanks to the planes hitting the towers. i don't remember where i saw that documentary other than on TV, so it may have been TV only. all i know is that that is why i got my fear of lifts, however, your channel, Beno, does a great job in clarifying the facts about lift safety and misconceptions with these videos. and not to mention, 9/11 was a bit of an extraordinary circumstance, meaning that it is very very unlikely to happen again. i still think its a bit silly that that's how i got my fear of lifts when i was younger

There is one random lift in hotels where most of the time staff go in it, but not many customers go in it. And it's faster. but for some reason they call it a service lift. It doesn't say service/goods lift on the door, and in the basement there is a service area. And it stops on hotel room floors as well. and they go past it without knowing its there. Examples are Hilton, Marriot, Hostel, Travelodge, premier inn, even family resort hotels like butlins. The only Butlins resort so far that has this is Bognor Regis, because they only have 3 hotels, and in minehead they have blueskies. So expensive.

People think lifts freefall downwards because they always think that the only way a lift could go wrong is if all the cables were to snap. Theoretically it could happen but it is very very rare.

These accidents in China are all happening because of bad and cheap quality of their materials of the lift components. And most of the chinese are too dump to build up an elevator like it schould be ! You can see the difference when you ride an Mitsubishi in china and one in Berlin or London. Once we crammed like 7 people in a lift that was rated for 6. It was a cheap generic lift. Did the lift plumment down the shaft? No. Did the lift get stuck? No.

A guy at work said a guy weighing 550 lb in a 500 lb construction elevator was jumping just for the hell of it and that elevator tried to fall downward cause it was heavy, but the brakes worked so it only fell 1 foot lol. That guy was banned from the elevator after they got him out though lol. Another way to protect against upward freefall is to simply prevent downward freefall of the counterweight. I have heard of safety jaws on the counterweight as well as the elevator car.

About the capacity thing, I agree with it being greater than the amount you could fit in the lift, and I bet there's further tolerances added onto that so the displayed capacity is a bit less than the maximum load the lift can withstand (again for safety reasons)

in brazil there is a sign in every elevetor door advinsing you to look whether the elevator is in the floor before entering.. I laughed hard last year when I saw the news about a foreign guy who just opened the door and entered in an open shaft..

But the shaft door can’t open on its own. The lift car needs to be there. It uses a solenoid to unlock the door and the motor engages to slide both the car and shaft doors open.

We have 2 lifts in my building in Hackney. They are “Express lift Company Northampton” lifts and are bloody tiny. Have a capacity of 3 people, but realistically can only fit 1 person, a maximum of 2 (I didn't know about the capacity thing either, although I wouldn't say I'm 'dumb' for that :/). They are constantly breaking down and are a pain. The smallest lifts I have ever been in, although I’m sure there are smaller ones. I’ve been stuck in them once or twice and it is a horrible experience.

The average chap in the street probably doesn't know much about counterweights. I knew about the upwards free fall. The capacity is always stated in kg as "persons" as unit is very abritrary. 4 childern or 4 adults or a combination of a two fat peoeple and a skinny one is no good of a measure. Over the years I've seen that the avarage mass of a "person" has changed. The lift industry consideres the avarge person to be 80 kg. The cables also have a very high redundancy in their strength. The safety factor is quite high. The change that a cable snaps is very small if the cables are well maintained. Somehow the intuitive fear of people is stronger then reason. People should be more mindfull of thin objects getting stuck in the doors such as a dog leash. In the netherlands they now have warning stickers in lifts with a visible gap between the doors as there have been some accidents where dogs where "hung" by their own collar.....

I know of one lift in canterbury which has a sign on it saying that children on reins are not allowed in the lift incase their reins get stuck in the doors. In the UK health and safety signs like this are only put up after an accident has happened. It makes me wonder if a child died in that lift as their reins were stuck in the doors as the lift moved.

In the netherlands there have been several accidents with dog leashes in recent years. Often happened to elderly people who stepped into the lift and forgot their dog was still outside the lift. This has resulted into one fatal incident where a woman wanted to rescue a dog who was already in the lift and the woman pulling on the shaft doors on the landing. The dog leash tripped behind the rollers and the interlock unlatched. The woman, had managed to open the shaft doors and fell into the shaft and died. It seems that this happens mostly with older lifts with automatic doors who haven't got a full-height safety edge and a gap of a few millimetres between the doors. I noticed new lifts often have some profiling into the door edge so that the gap is covered and making it much less likely that something thin can slip through. Also it seems challinging for safety edges to detect thin objects. Mitsubitshi has solved it by having 3D IR-sensor above the doors, I have seen this solution at least once.

It is rather stupid as you might trip VF OK and the lift will stop, but it should start again (maybe in JU mode). You could bounce the track clenching mechanism which could hit the safety switch and will stop the lift.

Only hydraulic lifts can sink down when thing goes wrong. Although lifts are one of the safest mean of transportation and hydraulic lifts have pawl devices which prevents the lift from sinking even if there is a leaking solenoid. The logic tells the pawl device To unlatch when the lift Will move.

Hydraulic lifts and counterweightless lifts (like the PowerDisc) fail downwards. I have seen hydraulic lifts sink down quite a few times due to a bad solenoid. A lot of crap lift logics keep releveling the lift when this happens. This causes the lift to wear out. I even told the staff about the issue and they didn't care as they were clueless about lifts and just let the lift destroy itself over multiple weeks of constant releveling. The only lift I have seen sink without releveling was an old Becker lift that didn't relevel until it was called, however that did not stop it from being replaced.

@@benolifts But I know a very cheap and basic generic logic made between 1995 and the 2000s which is the Sprinte Electra Vitoria ASP 116 which has relevelling as an option. This option correspond To the adress (menu) 72. And there are 4 datas (options). 0 = no relevelling. 1 = the doors opens before the lift stops 2 = relevelling with the doors open 3 = relevelling with the closed The programming tool of this logic is quite similar To the Kone LCE but you can put it in your pocket, it has 2 LEDS. 1 adress LED (menu) and 1 data (option) 3 buttons incrementation, decrementation and select. Theres also a DIP switch thingy.

lifts should have 2 brakes one as a backup and a governor that also trips when going up and also they should have an ESTOP button inside so if anything goes wrong the lift will instantly stop

Lifts have had 2 brakes, the motor brake and the track brakes connected to the governor, since the electric lift was first invented. Only in recent years have the governors protected the lift in the upwards direction, as well as being dual speed. Before governors used to only have 1 speed setting and only worked on the way down. Emergency stop buttons are put on lifts where you may need to stop a lift for reasons of safety, such as open gated lifts where something could stick through the gate and get crushed. On all other lift emergency stop buttons are not allowed in the lift car to stop an attacker using it so they can rape someone.

There was a malfunction in a building I was in where the elevator dropped super fast to 15 from 16. Maybe it was a computer error that did it but it happened. Lifted me up on my tip toes then slammed me to the ground.

Lol my 20 year old sister has been usin many elevators in the last 5 years .. One time she wanted to down and she jeard a loud *snap* It Overspeeded and she was on the first floor, 2 inches below the floor! It was an very old 1930 unmodified elevator! With broken security breaks!

I totaly agree but what if the lift starts going upwards and the cables break when it hits the roof of the elevator shaft and then drops down

The cables wont break even in that scenario. They're too strong for that to happen. A more relevant question is how to cables are attached to the lift body and counterweight. That structure might not be so well designed.

the counter-weight is heavier than the lift (usually a cable connects the lift on one side, wheel/motor in the top middle, then a counter-weight on the opposite side so the weight is balanced, imagine if it was at full capacity & you let go of the brakes, it should not move in any direction as the counter-weight would cancel... basically the lift isnt holding all weight by itself, it's not a vertical train)

I would think there are many solutions in the market since early 2000s, which comply the "Code of Practice on the Design and Construction of Lifts and Escalators" in Hong Kong, China. Which is the much stricter code than other countries in Europe. Traction machine must be installed with at least two brakes (2002) Ascending Car Overspeed Protection (2003) Unintended Car Movement Protection (2007) www.emsd.gov.hk/filemanager/en/content_826/Modernising_Lifts.pdf

So IF people are scared that the cables Will break just move to a building with a piston lift! They don’t fall often because the lift is hold on the piston and Pistons can’t just break down like that and fall down hard! Pistons can’t take that strength

Hydraulic lifts are complete rubbish and are very inefficient (except for hydroware). They are also painfully slow.
